ignaling concerns about cigarette smoking in condominiums and the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission recently passed a resolution urging the Florida Legislature to amend the Florida Clean Indoor Air Act to ban smoking in outdoor common areas of a condominium - except in areas specifically designated for smoking.

to the scheduled movie. This involves a 25 minute interactive activity that usually encourages the whole family to participate and is related to the feature film.

Take for example, last month’s feature “Jimmy Neutron, The Boy Genius” scheduled on February 3rd at Heritage Park and February 4th at Town Center Park. Kids were rushing to the “Jimmy Neutron’s Green Slime Laboratory” for the rare chance to make their very own green slime! Scientist, Kyllene Weiss was on

hand to show everyone how the concoction was made and before you know it, everyone was an instant scientist. Once completed, we had mini-black lights to make this sticky mess of fun, glow-in-the-dark! Now that’s not something you do every day.

So, be sure to join in on the fun with our next and last for the season, Family Movie Night in the Park: Friday, March 2nd, 2012 at Heritage Park (19200 Collins Ave.) and Saturday, March 3rd, 2012 at Town Center Park (17200 Collins

Ave.). The next feature film is “Rugrats in Paris”. Bring your little mini-chefs in training. Transference at Work can be Perilous

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Transference is when you redirect your childhood thoughts, beliefs and emotions about a person onto a new person later in life. It is a psychological phenomenon that is usually unconscious.

Transference in the workplace occurs when certain people and situations are reminiscent of your prior relationships and situations. You may not recognize these feelings or beliefs as something from the past and therein lies the danger professionally.

You might not have learned how to handle the original relationship or situation, so you are likely to repeat your reaction to it, regardless of whether or not your reaction is appropriate or inappropriate. This leaves you very vulnerable because you might overact or underreact.

You may be creating a negative scenario in your mind and all of your interactions with the current person are based on that.

Your father may have been very authoritar-

ian. Your co-worker or your boss may remind you of your father. This can cause a lot of friction and passive-aggressive behavior on your part. On the other hand, you may remind your co-worker or boss of someone from his past whose behavior he disapproved of. This is equally dangerous.

There is a possibility that you may be fired.

The situation could go the other way and you could be overly compliant with an individual because they remind you of a childhood friend or teacher who liked you. Your reactions to that person could make you look weak and ineffectual. This is equally hazardous.

If you are experiencing any negative emotions or situations at work don’t just blame the other person. Make an effort to understand what is really happening. Look for similarities in the person’s appearance or their mannerisms. Ask yourself if they resemble anyone from your past. If they do, you will need to look very closely and decide if your reactions are appropriate or not. If the negative reactions are coming from them you will have to talk to them in a gentle, non-confrontational manner.

The time is now…to be up and about, to enjoy, and to learn. On Thursday, February 16th SIB Social Seniors did just that by participating in our winery trip.

Many like myself, had visited wineries before but the Schnebly Winery is different. On part of the property there’s 1.25 acres of passion fruit vineyard. There are fifty banana trees with over 20 varieties of bananas all over the property. The plants in front of the exquisite waterfall are Monster Delicioso. The grounds are so beautiful that many weddings take place there.

Robert Burns, a local architect, designed the “Grand Tasting Room” where we enjoyed tasting different wines in our complimentary glass which were made from tropical fruit. We also had cheese snacks.

The winery has the potential to make about 100,000 gallons of wine a year.

Our private bus with our 50 passengers then took us to a lovely restaurant where we enjoyed time to socialize, receive our remembrance gift, and greet old friends and make new ones.

The cranes are coming Working out this morning at Equinox, I found myself excitedly thinking about all the new developments coming our way here in Aventura, Sunny Isles and the surrounding areas. The cranes are coming back. No, not the long-legged necked birds but rather those hefty pieces of yellow machinery primitively invented by the Ancient Greeks in the late 6th century. Along with the cranes, the developer parties will be back in full swing introducing their sexy, streamlined marvels nestled against sumptuous picturesque landscapes.

Recently I attended a luncheon at the Apogee Beach in Hollywood, located just one block north of the Beach Club. There Jorge Perez, a Cuban American real estate magnate and author and one of “The 4oo Richest People in America” according to Forbes Magazine of September 2008, spoke of his grand new project with intense passion. Following, Cuban cuisine was on the menu but with a new twist!

Rather than the lavish servicing one has been accustom to in the past, the gourmet delights were dished meals-on-wheels style from food trucks. Personally I found it amazing, refreshing and fun. The only thing missing was a few extra napkins!

A few weeks later my schedule included a brunch at Bellini of Williams Island. This 24story tower of 70 exclusive residences currently under development is the powerful vision of Developer Martin Margulies, also a renowned art collector and founder of the Margulies Art Collection at the Warehouse.

Bellini is to be the last residential site on Williams Island and with that, sales are surpassing expectations.

Bentley and Mercedes, my two teacup yorkies, were my companions to both events.

Bentley, who is practically a veteran of these affairs having attended several in the last years, was the poised gentleman. Mercedes, only nine months old, was “Kardashianesque” with much to gossip about! I’m sure Deco Drive is in her future with more of these events on the calendar.

Sunny Isles Beach is another area soon to be home to several cranes along the landscape.

The iconic developer Gil Dezer who developed Trump is collaborating with the Porsche Design Group in developing the Porsche Design Tower. The 57 story, 650 million dollar tower promises to be one of the most unique luxury beach condo offerings to date. Recently unanimously approved by the Sunny Isles Beach Commission, this iconic structure will transport your car, via a high-speed glass elevator, to your front door within 45 to 90 seconds – while you’re still enjoying the view.

This will be a technological wonder – can’t wait!

The Dezer’s are long known as car enthusiasts collecting since the 1970’. Michael Dezer’s office in Trump sports a classic car as a desk. Gil has a Porsche decorating the wall of his living room. They share a huge collection of American classic cars and memorabilia valued in excess of five million dollars.

This collection is soon to open as the Dezer Collection Museum and Pavillion in North Miami’s industrial district, the largest and most significant car collection in the United States, this month where the James Bond collection will be revealed.

In the good old days I once counted sixteen cranes as I drove from Haulover to Aventura.

Recently I spoke with the Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach Norman Edelcup who shared with me of six new projects in the works. So the excitement is returning. The developers are back. The parties and the preconstruction sales have begun. Things are looking up as high as the cranes can reach!

Cultural and Human Services Henry Norton lives quietly as your neighbor in the city. He celebrated a special birthday recently in the company of family from around the country. You might know him as the UM graduate & attorney who lives next door, or as Jenny’s husband, or as the father of those two nice girls, Rita and Susan. As with many other WWII Veterans who came back from the war and quietly contributed to our society, you would never know the obstacles he has overcome.

Because of his parents’ desire that their children have a Jewish education, he spent part of his youth separated from them while boarding at a Jewish orphanage and studying in a Jewish day school in Breslau, Germany. With the intensification of Nazi persecution, the family decided to try to immigrate to America. The American Consulate would only issue one visa for the family of seven, and his father chose him, as the oldest of the five children, to move to America at the age of 15. He was to pave the way for his siblings and parents to follow him to Rochester, New York.

Henry worked hard in his new country, learned English, and excelled in school and the workplace. He graduated from high school and welcomed his brother, Jack, who made it to America before the war broke out.

Another brother, Isidor, would later join them in America after surviving the Holocaust.

Unfortunately all other members of his family including grandparents, parents, another brother and a sister, aunts, uncles, and cousins, perished in the Holocaust.

Because of his skills, Henry had a chance to stay stateside and work in a defense plant during WWII. Instead he enlisted and was soon commissioned a Second Lieutenant and Field Artillery Officer. Henry was then selected for intensive military intelligence training at Army Camp Ritchie and he is forever now known as a “Ritchie Boy”. The

award-winning documentary film “The Ritchie Boys” depicts their vital secret contributions to the war effort. He interrogated captured enemy combatants at the front lines in Italy. He was a member of the exclusive “G2” that planned and participated in of the invasion of Southern France. He later was responsible for all captured enemy documents for the 7th Army. Under the direct orders of General Eisenhower, he then traveled throughout all European battle zones (French, English, and American), locating and recruiting for America the leading German rocket scientists, including Werner von Braun and his brother.

When he was discharged as a Captain with a Bronze Star Medal, he followed his heart to Miami and married Jenny. He first worked in a post-war defense plant, and then ran a dry cleaning business before enrolling in University of Miami and earning a law degree. Henry has practiced law since 1952 in Miami-Dade County.

He took on special projects and events in the city throughout the past year and during his off time, he devoted hours of assistance to Corporal Schnell for the Holiday Collection table to benefit children of officers killed in the line of duty.

2013 Hyundai Veloster lineup adds hot new 201 hp turbo

Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS I liked the Hyundai Veloster when I first drove it at the press preview in Portland, OR, back in October. I like it even more after spending a week behind the wheel of the little three-door coupe. It’s nicely designed, very sporty and handles well in traffic and on the highway.

My only knock on the car was that it was a bit underpowered, but Hyundai has moved to correct that fault, introducing a new turbocharged model for the 2013 lineup. The turbo version of the Veloster made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January.

It’s a bookend to Hyundai’s turbocharged sports coupe lineup, paired with the refreshed 274 hp rear-wheel-drive 2013 Genesis Coupe 2.0T (Turbo), which also debuted at the show.

Veloster is powered by a new 1.6-liter 201 hp Turbocharged-Gasoline Direct Injection (T-GDI) engine mated to a six-speed auto-

matic or manual transmission. The T-GDI engine produces 201 hp at 6,000 rpm and 195 pounds-feet of torque from 1,750-4,500 rpm with regular gas, and delivers 27/38 mpg with manual transmission models.

The Gamma engine has a twin-scroll turbocharger that, when combined with the GDI system, results in instantaneous power delivery.

Twin-scroll turbochargers are usually found on more expensive high performance engines. They have two exhaust gas inlets divided by split walls inside the turbine housing, with both gas passages controlled by a waste-gate. A twin-scroll turbo recovers more energy from the exhaust than a singlescroll turbocharger, thanks to a divided manifold. The twin-scroll design separates the cylinders, whose exhaust gas pulses interfere with each other, resulting in improved pressure distribution in the exhaust ports and a more efficient delivery of exhaust gas energy to the turbocharger’s turbine.

The Turbo Veloster has the same 104.3inch wheelbase as the production Veloster, but the Turbo is 1.2 inches longer (167.3 inches) and about a half-inch wider (71.1 inches).

lights, 18-inch alloy wheels with chrome inserts, a Graphite Black interior with blue accents and headliner graphics. Full leather seats with the word “Turbo” stitched into the seatbacks deliver a unique look and offer excellent support and comfort.

A Supervision Cluster in the dash gives the driver information in a larger, clearer and more interactive format, thanks to a pair of screens located between the tachometer and the speedometer. The center stack and controls resemble a sport-bike fuel tank and

incorporate a push-button starter and alloy pedals. Heated front seats are standard on the Turbo version.

Pricing on the 2012 Hyundai Veloster starts at $17,300, but an MSRP for the Turbo model has not yet been released.

CHANGE IN THE AIR? At the Feb. 16 City Commission meeting, Winston Towers resident Arlene Koenig spoke in favor of the resolution supporting a smoking ban in common areas of condominiums, noting, “This is a bold step - change is in the air and [the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission] is at the forefront of initiating this change…Let’s be ‘progressive and proactive.’ States that have already restored local control of smoke free air include Louisiana, Illinois, New Jersey, Delaware, Iowa, Nevada and Oregon; and I’m hoping this resolution will be the first step to include Florida on that list.

“We all know how dangerous secondhand smoke is and that it kills about 443,000 Americans every year. When somebody is smoking on their terrace they are [virtually] smoking in your apartment, which is a health hazard to you and your environment and can cause illness. On a personal note, I will be 67 next week and [passing] this resolution is the best birthday gift I can get - plus the gift from my oncologist who gave me thumbs up for being four years cancer-free.”

Commissioner Jeanette Gatto stated, “This resolution was initiated by [Arlene Koenig] who has experienced secondhand smoke floating into her unit and it generated a bigger conversation about multi-unit dwellings where we all share space.

Whether we like it or not, in condos we’re inherently sharing air space and common areas so it’s very difficult to dodge cigarette smoke - especially secondhand smoke, which is documented to be very dangerous to your health.

“This [resolution] urges the Florida Legislature to amend the Clean Air Act to prohibit smoking in all common areas – the pool area, parking garages, patios and balconies. There are a lot of situations where smoke is drifting into other units. We’re going to press hard for this and urge our legislators to [address] this because we think it’s extremely important given the fact that secondhand smoke is toxic and dangerous “ Commissioner Isaac Aelion pointed out, “As president of a condo building, I get a lot of complaints from residents who live above smokers units and indeed [the smoke] rises.

I’ve experienced firsthand when an individual smokes on a [highrise] balcony, automatically, the smoke goes to the upper balcony and inside [a unit] if the sliding doors are open, so it is very appropriate that this

resolution is being brought before us.”

Gatto added, “I [also personally] have a situation where I have a bedroom that is five feet away from my neighbor’s balcony and [the cigarette smoke] is drifting sideways so it really is impossible to control because it’s dictated by where the wind is blowing.”

ALARMING STATISTICS According to the Center for Disease Control, tobacco use - including cigarettes and various forms of smokeless tobacco – have led to more deaths than HIV, illegal drug use, motor vehicle accidents and acts of violence combined. The CDC also reports that breathing in secondhand smoke has an instant effect on a person’s cardiovascular system. Even a slight exposure can damage blood vessels and cause blood platelets to become sticker. Over time, these changes can result in heart disease and heart attacks.

People regularly exposed to secondhand smoke have a 20 to 30 percent greater chance of developing lung cancer than those who are not exposed as often.

Secondhand smoke refers not only to the smoke that wafts from the end of a burning cigarette, but also the smoke that is breathed out by the smoker.

Multi-unit housing structures such as condominiums where smoking is allowed is a special concern and subject of research. According to the Florida Department of Health, secondhand smoke can seep through lighting fixtures, cracks in walls, around plumbing, under doors, through shared ventilation, as well as permeate building materials, and then enter adjoining units. Secondhand smoke cannot be controlled with ventilation, air cleaning or by separating smokers from non smokers.

Many U.S. local and state governments have decided that protecting the health of people in public places is of the utmost importance. Many have passed clean indoor air laws. Although the laws vary from place to place, they are becoming more common. According to the New York Sun, secondhand smoke is overtaking noise as one of the most common complaints coming before condo boards.

Locally, as of Jan.1, 2012, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center became a “tobacco-free” campus. No smoking or tobacco use is permitted inside the main hospital garages the Cancer Center, or anywhere on the hospital campus including surrounding medical buildings.

PROTECTING YOUTHS During the Feb. 16 City Commission meeting, the issue of candy flavored tobacco being marketed to young people was also addressed. Koenig introduced youths involved with the Students Working Against Tobacco for Miami-Dade initiative aligned with the Florida Department of Health’s Tobacco Free work group.

Koenig and the students explained, “We’re very concerned about the issue of candy flavored tobacco. It targets new users - the majority of which are kids. Studies show that 17-year-old smokers are three times as likely to use flavored cigarettes as smokers over the age of 25. Almost 90 percent of adult smokers began smoking as teenagers…We want to prevent youths from beginning to use these cancer causing products by getting them off the shelves.

“This policy is not aimed at the few adults using these products who can easily switch to other products - but at protecting our youth. Some facts: Twenty percent of smokers ages 17-19 smoked flavored ciga-

rettes while only six percent of smokers over the age of 25 reported smoking flavored cigarettes.

“Eighty percent of smokers started before the age of 18. This ban will help stop the more than 3,600 young people who start smoking daily. We would like to ask [the Sunny Isles Beach City Commission] to pass a policy [related to] taking these products off the shelves and protecting our youths.”

In response, Mayor Norman Edelcup said the issue concerning tobacco targeting youths would be considered at a future Commission meeting. Explaining the process, City Manager Alan Cohen said, “When [proposed] legislation is brought before the Commission it takes some time to develop. City staff has to write it – and the City Attorney has to review it. The legislative process is a deliberative one that does take some time…So this will go through the channels and hopefully come before the Commission at some point.”
