outh Miami Hospital is the recipient of the prestigious Governor’s Sterling Award for 2010, the Florida Sterling Council recently announced. The award is given to organizations in Florida that meet or exceed the highest standards for organizational performance. The 467-bed community hospital earned recognition as a role model of performance excellence for following rigorous standards set forth by the Florida Sterling Council and demonstrating superiority in the areas of leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management, and results. The Sterling standards mirror those of the Malcolm Baldridge Award criteria, which are recognized nationally as the world-class standard for organizational excellence. “South Miami Hospital has always been recognized for the quality of care being provided to this community,” said Lincoln Mendez, South Miami Hospital CEO. “Receiving the Governor’s Sterling Award validates our commitment to our patients, because we continuously strive to reach a higher level of performance.” Joining South Miami Hospital as winners of this year’s Governor’s Sterling Award are Florida Hospital in Orlando and James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospitals and Clinics in the Tampa area. This is the first time in the 18-year history of the award that all recipients are from the healthcare sector. “I am honored to recognize this year’s Sterling Award recipients,” said Florida Gov. Charlie Crist. “This year’s winners have demonstrated their commitment to improving healthcare in Florida. The process of competing for the award alone encourages organizations to pursue excellence and improve service.” To become a Governor’s Sterling Award recipient South Miami Hospital cited its consistent top scores in patient, employee and physician satisfaction, exceeding national benchmarks in quality care and patient safety initiatives, and being recognized by independent agencies for excellent nursing care and quality patient outcomes.

“Fitness is for everyone, you just have to find the program that’s right for you,” said Scott Baumann, Partner and General Manager of Fitness Together in South Miami. “Your fitness should reflect your lifestyle. Not everyone is comfortable with the big gym scene or with mass boot camps. We offer something that is truly exclusive in personal training programs.” Since no two people are alike or have the same fitness goals, no one fitness plan will work for everyone. Fitness Together creates a personalized program for each client that includes resistance training, cardiovascular exercise and a nutritional plan. “The consult we have with a client on that first day is so important,” said Baumann. “We determine the client’s goals and conduct a comprehensive fitness assessment in order to create a personalized program that will achieve the desired results.” At Fitness Together, clients will experience a system of training that is proven to be extremely effective for fat loss and muscle gain, creating the lean and muscular shape that most people desire. “Weight training and building muscle is so important to achieve changes in the body,” said Baumann. “Muscle is the furnace of the body. When you increase muscle, you will increase metabolism.” As part of their fitness program, clients will follow a personalized nutrition plan developed by nutritionist, Dr. Janet Brill, and receive oneon-one nutrition counseling and motivation from a Fitness Together trainer. “A lot of good work can go to waste with one or two really bad eating choices,” said Baumann. “The key to healthy eating is to eat healthy, eat light and eat often.” The seven personal trainers at Fitness Together will bring plenty of motivation along with something new and different to each of your training sessions in order to make your workout challenging, fun and effective.
“It’s important to work numerous muscles and have variety in a program to achieve dramatic results in less time,” said Baumann. “We’re here to keep you on track and motivate you. We get just as excited as our clients do as they achieve their results and see changes in their bodies.” Baumann says that his clients often fall into two categories: Those who have never worked out or haven’t worked out in years; and those who have been floundering in their current exercise program and are no longer seeing results or moving forward. “Many of our clients begin a program because they have a painful motivation in their life,” explained Baumann. “Clients come because summer is coming and they feel they can’t wear a bathing suit or they want to lose weight and look great for a special event. Some want to be active with their young children and be a role model for them. Others need to lose weight for health reasons. Whatever the motivation, people want to live well and have quality in their life.” Baumann graduated from Rutgers University and has over 15 years experience in fitness. Before moving to Miami, he was a bodybuilder in New York and spent eight years as the premier trainer at one of Manhattan’s largest health clubs. His focus at Fitness Together is on you – to get the most out of your workout, your time and your life. “This is a life changing experience,” said Baumann. “Give us three months and you will see a big difference.”

Tips to help teens drive safer this summer BY PHILLIP LYONS Senior Vice President, InSource, Inc.
With school out and teens driving more often, here are tips that will help improve their driving and get them to the mall, beach or club safely. IN GENERAL • Don’t make assumptions about what other drivers are going to do. The only thing you can assume about another driver with a turn signal on is that he has a turn signal on. He might not be turning at all and forgot to turn it off the last time he used it or has changed his mind. • When there’s an obstruction in your lane, wait for oncoming traffic to clear before you pull around. Just because someone’s blocking your lane doesn’t mean you have the right of way in the next or oncoming lane. • Watch out for aggressive drivers and try to stay out of their way. • Don’t do anything that will cause another car’s driver to slam on the brakes such as pulling out in front of him or swerving into his lane. • Avoid making left hand turns across busy intersections that don’t have turn signals. It takes a while to learn how to gauge the oncoming traffic. Better to go down a block or two until you come to a light, or plan a route that doesn’t need this turn. • When driving to a new place, get complete directions before you go, including what exits you need to take. • Don’t talk on your cell phone, text, eat, put on make up or change the radio station while you are driving. Wait until you’re at a complete stop. Taking your focus off the road for even a few seconds can lead to an accident. • Always make sure you have enough
INSURANCE gas — who knows where you might get stranded. DRIVING IN RAIN • Turn your headlights on anytime you need to turn your windshield wipers on. It will help your visibility and help other drivers see you. • Double the space you normally leave between you and the next car to allow yourself more space to stop. • Use gentle pressure on the accelerator pedal when starting. If your wheels start to spin, let up on the accelerator until traction returns. • When starting out in bad weather, test your brakes to see how far it takes you to stop. • When braking on wet roads, do not pump brakes if you have ABS (anti-lock) brakes. If you skid with non ABS brakes and your wheels lock up, let up on the brakes to unlock the wheels, then brake gently. • Listen to radio traffic reports and adjust your travel plans accordingly. • Avoid deep puddles. The water can mask a pothole or seep into the engine, causing it to seize up. InSource offers a variety of affordable insurance plans for adult and teen drivers. Proposed Constitutional Amendment 4 is a real conundrum R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Proposed Florida Constitutional Amendment 4, known as “The Growth Amendment,” is a complex issue requiring voters to decide how much control they wish to take back from their government. To vote for the amendment is to say that we do not trust the very people we elect to act on our behalf. To vote against the amendment seems to say that we don’t want to control the future development of our state. This is what we call a conundrum. Florida Hometown Democracy started collecting voters’ signatures in 1996, petitioning the state to place its amendment on the ballot. This amendment, in essence, states that all city and county comprehensive land use plans shall be approved or rejected by the voters of the community in which the proposed change is to take affect. Democracy in action — it sounds good.
But could it work? Are we like the Greek state of old where hundreds of citizens gathered in the public square and voted on an issue? Presidential elections in the U.S. have a hard time getting 60 to 65 percent of the registered voters into voting booths to select their next president. Off year elections run about 10 to 15 percent less than presidential races. To me, the basic question is why do we distrust the very people we elected to make our political decisions for us? If we trusted the candidate or even more the official in office asking us to return them, why would we want to take away the authority we gave them in the first place? If they are incompetent then we should not elect them to office. We should not return them to office if they are running for reelection, and remove them from office by recall if we find them incompetent or corrupt. How many voters would turn out on a Tuesday to vote on extending the Urban Development Boundary (UDB) so that a new Walmart could be built on four acres on the edge of town? I guarantee, not many! How many registered voters have
305.233.6744 Here’s how to become a valued consigner:
–– VIEWPOINT –– the time to study the complexity of a comprehensive land use change? I am suggesting that few have the time, the energy or the background to study the issue and make an intelligent decision on how to vote. We have a process in place to determine the value of a change in the use of our land. The county has an entire department that studies the issues and makes recommendations to the elected officials we placed in office to vote on the subject. Historically, I can say that the county’s Planning Department’s evaluations of recent proposed land use plan changes have been thorough, accurate and correct. The problem lies with the elected officials, the ones we voted into office who frequently make bad decisions. Our Miami-Dade County commissioners vote on the issue of land use change. They study the recommendations of the Planning
Department. They get input from the state. They consider the issue and vote. The question is: Do they vote on the merits of the issue or do they vote based upon the desires of those that want to see the use of land in our county changed? We must trust the elected officials we placed in office to do the right thing or we must replace them when they come up for reelection. Better we vote on whom we place in office than to vote on the issues that come before them. We appreciate your opinions on this column whether in agreement or disagreement. There are ways to lower your summer electric bill Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY With the temperature rising to the high 80s and the low 90s, it means we need to keep cool. The best way is by lowering the thermostat and turning up the ceiling fan, which increases the electric bill and robs our wallets. So how do we stay cool and spend less on electricity in these difficult economic times A great way to reduce your bill is by using a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats can save energy when cooling a house. You also can program the device to know when no one is home or when everyone is asleep. According to the Home Energy Saver site, Energy Star programmable thermostats can save as much as 20-30 percent on your cooling costs by allowing for multiple daily settings and automatically adjusting when the outside temperature changes. Another way to decrease your electric bill is by using the ceiling fan instead of the
air conditioning. Not only can the ceiling fan keep you cool, but you also save energy by using the ceiling fan instead of the air conditioning. If you want to reduce more from your electric bill, you can start looking into your lights and electrical appliances. Compact fluorescent lamps can be helpful in many different areas. These lamps use up to 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. The appliance in the house that wastes the most energy is the refrigerator. In fact, the refrigerator alone can account up to 9 percent of the electric bill. If you are looking to buy a new refrigerator, consider going on the Energy Star site and you will be able to look at list for energy-efficient models. By using your thermostat and ceiling fan correctly you will be able to reduce your electric bill and save energy at the same time. You also can help save by purchasing the electrical appliances that are most energy efficient. During these rough times it’s all about saving money and preserving energy. Watch Al Sunshine’s “4 Your Money” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at <www.cbs4.com/4yourmoney>.

Flagler St. The fair will commemorate National Safety Month. Information and resources on home safety, senior safety, child safety, food safety and household and chemical safety will be available. ADHD in the Workplace
Keeping a job in today's competitive environment can be particularly difficult for people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In addition to having talent and drive, people are required to show excellent focus, attention to detail, speed, and organization. These crucial workplace skills may be challenging for the estimated 8 million American adults with ADHD. Job prospects can suffer as a result of the restlessness and inability to focus that are hallmarks of ADHD. One national survey showed that only half of adults with ADHD were able to hold
down a full-time job, compared to 72% of adults without the disorder. When they were able to secure a job, they tended to earn less than their peers without ADHD. Those employment problems translate into nearly $77 billion in lost income each year, which works out to $8,000 less for each adult with ADHD. How Does ADHD Affect Employment? How significantly ADHD affects your job outlook depends on the severity of the condition. Some people with ADHD may just have trouble staying on-task, while others can't make it through the workday without getting into a huge blow-up with a boss or co-worker. Those who are more severely affected can lose their job, or wind up bouncing from job to job, or seeking disability benefits. ADHD affects job performance in a number of ways. If you can't sit still and
have trouble organizing and focusing, you may find meetings excruciating, and keeping track of multiple projects and deadlines enormously challenging. One study showed that people with ADHD often had more difficulty with attention, working memory, mental processing, and verbal fluency -- executive-function abilities that are all important in the workplace. Those difficulties led to fewer employment prospects and lower incomes. People with ADHD tend to have trouble with the following work-related areas: Time management, Organization, Listening and paying attention, Following directions, Procrastination, Completing assignments, Attending to details, Getting to work on time, Speaking in turn, Sitting still, Controlling emotions, Anger Attention Deficient Disorder (ADD), or
with hyperactivity (ADHD), can be treated by using Neurofeedback. This treatment is based on computer programs that read your brain waves. With the assistance of your neurofeedback trainer (most often a licensed therapist), your brain is trained to produce the "good waves." Every time the computer reads the desired brain waves it rewards the brain with sounds and visual stimulation. Thus, the brain reacts favorably to these rewards by producing more of those brain waves. Neurofeedback has been described in lay terms as “playing video games with your brain.” Through repetition, (“training”), the brain soon starts to produce the desired brain waves without computer coaching. This is the point in which most people begin to experience improvement. For more information please contact Miami Institute of Training and Neurofeedback at 305-448-5111.

Eagle Scout projects increase the usage of nature preserve BY NATALIE CAMPANERIA
The old adage of “if you build it, they will come” seems to be true at Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center. During the past year, four Boy Scouts and volunteers from Troop 616 completed their Eagle Scout projects at the park. Castellow Hammock is one of the first environmental education centers in Miami-Dade County and offers programs for home-school groups, public schools, Scouts and civic organizations. The park is getting more use, especially from large groups since the improvements have been completed, according to Roger Hammer, the onsite park ranger. George B. Casey moved the Fire Ring used by groups to a safer area; he enlarged the size of the ring and built a horseshoe shaped arrangement of bench seating around the fire pit to accommodate those large groups. Months later, Patrick Walkington enhanced the pit by permanently cementing the stones that encircle the fire ring. Mario A. Cuello built and installed a
self-standing roofed wooden information kiosk. The new kiosk is located in the Scouts and overnight camping area. It is intended to house general Scouting and safety information, as well as water buckets. Julian Enjamio and his helpers built two fences. The first and longer of the two fences dresses up the pathway that leads to the nature center and serves to “funnel” visitors to the center. The second and smaller fence escorts visitors into the nature trail in the natural hammock portion of the park. Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center is a 112-acre park and preserve located at 22301 SW 162 Ave. Boy Scout Troop 616 is chartered to St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 12125 SW 107 Ave. in Kendall. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Scout George Casey prepares to work on Fire Ring at Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center.

The South Florida Workforce is an equal opportunity employer/program. Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.
Summer is an exciting time. Kids are out of school, and families and couples are planning their much-anticipated vacations. Experts say the odds are in your favor that you will have an incident-free trip. However, despite how minimal the possibility is of something going wrong, sometimes crime and violence do occur. With the right information and safety precautions, you will know just how to react and where to turn to for help should a critical situation arise. The Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department suggests you beware of these types of scams and follow certain travel safety recommendations.
COMMON RIP-OFFS Pick-pockets. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in unfamiliar territory. Pickpockets generally use guises and accomplices to distract you while relieving you of your valuables. Keep your valuables secure to your body. Consider purchasing a money belt that can be worn beneath your clothes to hide your cash, credit cards and passport. C u r rency exchanges. If you need to exchange money, know what the current rates are before you leave the country. It gives you the power of determining if you’re being ripped off. Use the services of licensed establishments. Do not exchange money with individuals on the street who may not give you valid currency, or worse, might rob you. You should generally avoid currency exchange booths in popular tourist destinations, such as airports and train stations, because they do not offer the best exchange rates. Instead, favor local banks and sometimes hotels. There are always exceptions. Some hotels do offer bad rates. At least, if you know the rate ahead of time, you can make a money-saving decision. Telemarketing travel fraud. Exercise caution before responding to a sales pitch about a great, bargain-priced vacation getaway. The pitch may come in the form of a phone call, letter, email or flyer. However, more often than not, there are strings attached. You may not get everything that was promised to you or you may have to sit through presentations that last for hours. You also might fall victim to a scam that defrauds consumers out of millions of dollars each month. Buying or selling timeshares. Research the company with which you will be doing business. Contact the Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department, Better Business Bureau, state attorney general, and the local consumer protection agency in the state
where a seller or reseller is located. Ask if any complaints are on file. Don’t act on impulse or under pressure. Study the paperwork outside of the presentation environment and, if possible, ask someone who is knowledgeable about contracts and real estate to review it before you make a decision. Ask about fees and timing. It’s preferable to do business with a reseller that takes its fee after the timeshare is sold. If you must pay a fee in advance, ask about refunds. Get refund policies and promises in writing.
CONSUMER SMARTS • If you’re traveling to a foreign country, check the U.S. Department of State’s website to see if they have posted any safety alerts. Prior to your departure, familiarize yourself with the local laws of your destination country, and determine where the U.S. consulate offices and embassies are located. • Use a current-edition travel guidebook. You easily can check one out from your local library or buy one at the store. It’s good to have one on hand because the establishments listed already have been checked out by a travel professional. Such books even warn you about particular dangers in certain areas. • If you’re using a travel agent, make sure the individual and/or company are licensed to operate. Ask family and friends for recommendations. • Consider purchasing trip cancellation insurance. Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses — such as airline tickets — if you are forced to cancel a trip due to an unforeseen emergency. Shop around for the best prices and terms. Read the fine print and examine the types of cancellation reasons covered by the contract. Check the expiration times and dates for seeking reimbursements. Read exclusion clauses carefully. For instance, most policies do not cover preexisting health conditions. • Consider purchasing travel health insurance. Even if your health insurance will reimburse you for medical care that you pay for abroad, health insurance usually does not pay for medical evacuation from a remote area or from a country where medical facilities are inadequate. Consider purchasing a policy designed for travelers, and covering short-term health and emergency assistance, as well as medical evacuation in the event of an accident or serious illness. For additional consumer tips, or to check the complaint history of a company, file a complaint or ask consumer-related questions, visit the Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department website at <www.miamidade.gov/csd> or call 305375-3677.

InstantAmber, My Gym join forces for Internet safety BY ROBERT HAMILTON
InstantAmber and My Gym Children’s Fitness Center have combined their resources to highlight “Internet Safety Month in June with a national awareness campaign providing families with the information they need to keep kids safe while they surf the Web. Established in 2005 by the U.S. Senate, National Internet Safety Month encourages safety organizations, educators, law enforcement, civic leaders, parents and others to increase awareness of safe online practices. The 2005 resolution acknowledges the tremendous impact the Internet has made on how families communicate and interact, and helps families, parents and children navigate the Web as safely as possible. In support of this campaign, Angie Cortez, owner of My Gym Children’s Center, located at 15801 S. Dixie Hwy., will encourage member families to visit InstantAmber for information about how they can take advantage of all the online world has to offer, while avoiding the many dangers lurking on the Web. To provide families with the most current information available regarding Internet safety for children, InstantAmber (www.InstantAmber.com) has drawn on the combined resources of such noted organizations as KinderVision, Predator Safety, InternetSafety.com, Stop Internet Predators, Safely Ever After, National Alert Registry and Neighborhood Scan. My Gym has made a major commitment to provide a resource for fitness and healthful lifestyle practices for children on the Internet. The company’s website (www.mygym.com) offers detailed corporate information while the website for The
Activators, My Gym’s entertaining fun and fitness troupe, (www.theactivators.net) provides hours of fun-filled fitness exercises and interactivity geared for kids of all ages. “My Gym is all about keeping kids fit and empowering children to make healthful choices for their lives. By working with My Gym, InstantAmber can extend the message of fitness to encompass safety on the Web, where websites unsuitable for kids reside and where predatory behavior is on the rise,â€? said Matt Berman, founder and CEO of InstantAmber. “We look forward to serving as a resource for My Gym families to help them keep their children protected online as well as in their day-to-day lives,â€? he added. “While the Internet has opened up wonderful new opportunities for social interaction and learning for kids, the online world has a dark side,â€? Cortez said. “We are delighted to join with InstantAmber to bring My Gym families in Miami specific information that will help them defend against predatory practices and avoid the dangers presented by the Internet.â€? For more information, contact Angie Cortez at 305-235-7922. InstantAmber is a Web-based data gathering, storage, and delivery service that enables law enforcement to retrieve critical information and photos in the event of a missing child emergency. The concept for InstantAmber was born in 2008, as the result of Matt Berman’s experience when his young daughter went missing during a family vacation. His deep concern about the national tragedy of missing children led him to create InstantAmber, ensuring that parents have access to the best possible tool in the event of a missing child emergency. As part of Big Lots’ 2010 Lots2Give contest, the public is being invited to view videos submitted by the participating schools at <www.lots2give.com> and vote for their favorite. To enter the contest, schools had to submit a 90-second video and a 50-word essay on why their school could use some additional financial support. One $10,000 grand prize and 45 $2,000 first prizes will be awarded. Felix Varela High School and John A. Ferguson High School, both of West Kendall, are among schools vying nationally for a chance to win a share of the $100,000 in cash prizes.
Big Lots encourages the public to cast a ballot for their favorites and help support education at the same time. Here are a few things to keep in mind: • Voting ends on July 5, at 11:59 p.m. (EDT); • Videos can be viewed and votes cast at <www.lots2give.com>; • Winners will be announced on Aug. 14, and • View the videos as much as you would like, however, there is a limit of three votes per person, per day. During last year’s contest, John E. Ewing Middle School in Gaffney, SC, was selected the grand prize winner as America cast an amazing 304,314 votes in the contest.

Informed Families celebrates with celebrity maitre d’ event BY DUREE ROSS
The 25th anniversary of Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership’s Annual Fundraising Dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant was celebrated with all the elements families love most about Miami — great music, amazing food and an exclusive prize. A Tent Party on May 17 at Joe’s kickedoff the event at 6 p.m., featuring appetizers from the famed South Beach landmark restaurant and H20 Bars manned by Miami corporate leaders. Event organizers provided guests a sneak peek at the exclusive new Mercedes Benz SLS model and a chance to win a C-Class model three-year lease, in the color of their choice, courtesy of sponsors Mercedes Benz of Coral Gables and Cutler Bay. A surprise group consisting of MiamiDade County Commissioner Sally Heyman (a real trooper in her wheelchair with a broken ankle); Sen. Gwen Margolis; Kathy Fernandez-Rundle; CBS4’s Jorge Estevez, and former Miami Dolphins from the 1972 team, Dick Anderson and Ed Newman, led party-goers into the dinner at 7:30 p.m.
Guests enjoyed Joe’s signature dishes and legendary service, said honorary chair Marian Krutulis, founder of Gulliver Schools. Peggy B. Sapp, president and CEO of Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership, credits community support with enabling the organization to reach such an event milestone. “Every year, we benefit from an outpouring of generosity from families who care about educating and nurturing their children,” Sapp said. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since Informed Families/The Florida Family Partnership joined with Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant to hold this wonderful event, raising money to prevent drug use and underage drinking. Now, many of the children of our original supporters are parents themselves and our prevention programs are reaching this next generation.” New this year, supporters followed the activities and developments of the Annual Fundraising Dinner on a dedicated website at <www.informedfamiliesjoesdinner.com>. For more information on Informed Families, visit the website at <www.informedfamilies.org>, or call 305-856-4886.

Don’t pay designer prices to wear designer fashions BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
Looking for designer brand blouses but can’t afford the designer prices? A visit to Again and Again Consignment might be just the ticket. The stock at the consignment store includes many designer items that can be had for a fraction of the retail price. Although some of the items are used, there are some that were never worn. Again and Again also can be the place to sell your lightly used non-designer clothing, the crib the baby grew out of, or that designer handbag that you just don’t like anymore but is in great condition. Jennifer Allen, who owns the store with her husband, Rick Allen, said she takes clothing for everyone — infants, women and babies — as well as household accessories and shoes. “It does not need to be designer, but it does need to be in excellent condition,” she said. “I do have a designer showcase for purses, wallets and there is a rack for everyday purses,” she said. “There is a showcase for jewelry. There is a special baby room only with different things you need for the baby, and I have all that in the store.” She actually ran out of room at the storefront at 17005 S. Dixie Hwy. so she rented a
second storefront for furniture. It’s only a couple of doors down from the primary shop. All types of furniture are available, including end tables; living room, dining room and bedroom sets. “And any odd and end pieces you may need to add to your décor,” she said. “I have a honey want list. If someone comes in and says I really want a king bedroom set and, if I don’t have it, I’ll try to find it for you.” The store is set up to make the items look enticing. “The dining room table is not just sitting there, it is set for dinner,” she said. “As far as pricing, it may be more than somewhere else, but you’re going to pay for what you get. I have put my heart and soul into my store.” So do employees Bonnie Brooks, Tara Ilvio and Melody Legacy. Allen said they keep things going at the shop, making sure everything is set up beautifully, and kept neat and clean. “I can honestly say, they run this place for me,” Allen said. The store is important to her. Growing up, she shopped at consignment stores, so when the Cutler Bay store she frequented for children’s clothes went up for sale, it didn’t take her long to decide to buy it. That store was 700 square feet. “Now I’m 3,000 square feet with a second
Jennifer Allen, owner of Again and Again Consignment, takes pride in the quality of the goods found in her shop.
store of only furniture,” she said. She loves the excitement of coming to work every day and seeing what people bring her to sell. “This is like Christmas every day. I never know what is coming in,” she said. However, she does have high standards. Clothes have to be freshly washed, ironed
and on hangers. Items go on display for three months. If it doesn’t sell, it’s marked half price for a month. The owner receives 40 percent of the sale. The split on furniture is 50-50. “You can use the money as credit in the store or you can take a check,” she said. For more information, call 305-235-1515.

Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run raises $24,070 for Red Cross

Following the conclusion of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run Series, TeamFootWorks presented the American Red Cross with a check for $24,070, a donation of $1 per runner who participated in the three-city event. 2010 marked the first time the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run Series benefited the Red Cross and its disaster assistance, and health and safety programs in South Florida. From July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009, the American Red Cross responded to 556 local disasters in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, including 515 fires, and taught lifesaving CPR and First Aid to 19,607 people. “This donation will ensure that our communities are well prepared for any disaster that threatens South Florida,” said Sam Tidwell, CEO of the American Red Cross South Florida Region. “Our volunteers and staff members enjoyed the change of pace, exchanging their work shoes and business attire for sneakers and workout clothes to show our community the benefits of lead-
ing a healthy lifestyle. We look forward to partnering with TeamFootWorks again for a very successful run in 2011.” Dozens of American Red Cross volunteers worked with TeamFootWorks, the producer of the races conducted in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, to set up the grounds for the races and to help ensure a smooth, fun time for everyone the day of the event. Having just completed its 25th Year, the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run Series began in downtown Miami in 1985 with just over 1,300 participants. In 2010, 24,070 runners took to the streets not just to boost camaraderie among their coworkers, but to promote health and fitness in the workplace. Fourth generation Subaru Outback is all new for 2010 Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The Subaru Outback is all new for 2010 and marks the fourth generation of the Sport Utility Wagon. It’s roomier, has bolder styling and delivers better performance, comfort and fuel economy. Launched 15 years ago, this latest version of Subaru’s crossover has an all-new chassis and more ground clearance at 8.7 inches. A new rear double wishbone suspension enhances chassis dynamics and rear cargo space. The new Outback has an upright grille with the circular Subaru badge and wing design as the focal point, offset by dramatic hawk-eye headlights. To the rear, the taillights blend into the rear liftgate and highlight the beltline. The wider track, expressive wheelwell arches, molded lower rocker panels and side cladding all serve to denote an improved off-road capability. At the same time, Subaru engineers have increased interior volume by almost 7 per-
cent in a package that is slightly shorter than the previous model. The wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer and rear seat legroom is improved by almost four inches, but front and rear overhangs are reduced by two inches to maintain vehicle capability. It’s also two inches wider for improved passenger comfort and has more headroom. The 2010 Outback is offered in two basic models with two different power and transmission options in eight configurations: The 2.5i — powered by a revised 170-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine mated to either a new standard six-speed manual transmission or the available Lineartronic CVT. The new 3.6R — powered by a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder Boxer engine teamed with a five-speed electronic automatic transmission. When equipped with the Lineartronic CVT, the 2010 Outback 2.5i achieves EPA fuel economy estimates of 22/29 mpg, making it the most fuel-efficient Outback ever produced. Compared to the 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine it replaces, the more powerful 3.6-liter Boxer has a similar external size and uses recommended regular-grade fuel, rather than premium as Subaru recommended to achieve rated output figures in the previous 3.0R models.
New Outback has an upright grille with the circular Subaru badge and dramatic hawk-eye headlights.
The 2010 Outback features greater use of high-tensile strength steel to keep any weight increase below 95 pounds on any one model, despite the roomier interior package. All Outback models for 2010 have a larger 18.5-gallon fuel tank. As with all Subarus, the new Outback has Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard equipment. It’s an invaluable performance and safety-enhancing system that comes in three different versions, each tailored to the
