First National Bank of South Miami celebrates Stanley Cup victory

W

hile two million fans celebrated the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup victory with a ticker tape parade through the streets of Chicago, the Blackhawks’ extended family and fans at First National Bank of South Miami were having their own celebration. The Wirtz family, owners of the First National Bank of South Miami since 1952, are also long-time owners of the Chicago Blackhawks. On Wednesday, June 9, the Blackhawks brought home the team’s first Stanley Cup in 49 years during a dramatic overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers in game six. “We sent the Blackhawks all of our good vibes from South Florida,” said Executive Vice President of the bank, Veronica Birch Flores.

Happy Fathers Day, Dad. Ron, as we have always called my father, suffered a stroke more than 10 years ago, and even though he is not able to speak very well, not able to use his predominate right side and lost most of the strength in one leg, he still marched on. Two years ago, his legs finally gave out, though, and now he is confined to a wheel chair and lives in a nursing home. Ron’s ability to speak is very limited, but somehow, he can communicate his needs. He is clearly frustrated by not being able to share exactly how he feels, but every once in a while, there is a real connection. Last weekend, we shared a special moment that didn’t require any words. As I sat in a chair next to my father, neither one of us said anything and we just looked at each other; Eye-to-eye, Hombre-a-Hombre, Marine-to-Marine, son-to-father, father-to-son, person-to-person, humankind-to-humankind. There was a depth of introspection that pierced both of us, deeper than I have ever experienced before. It was one of those all-knowing moments as we
