he YMCA buildings at South Miami Park, also known as Downrite Park, still have not begun construction after nearly four years, and city officials are concerned. The YMCA suggests that they are waiting on the city for a go-ahead.

Charlotte Donn, a spokesperson for the YMCA of Greater Miami, stated when contacted last week that they needed more information from city officials.

“The last thing we had in communication with the city was trying to get some feedback on what the Master Plans were, and we’re waiting for our next steps with them because we can’t build the Y separate from what they’re doing at the park,” said Donn. “So we need to be working together on what they’re planning to do with the Master Plan,

And speaking of gossip, I hear that the two story building on the east side of SW 62 Avenue and a half block south of Sunset Drive and next to the Chevron gas station is going to be leveled real soon. A while back South Miami Hospital purchased the building, and I was just wondering if anyone knows what the future may bring us on that property.

Could the prediction of Vice Mayor Brian Beasley possibly come true? You might remember he told just about everyone that SMH was going to buy up all the land on SW 62 Avenue, north of Sunset Drive on the west side, including the property where our office is located. His story has the hospital putting up a 4-story trauma center, equipped with all the latest everything including all the ambulances and helicopters that the streets and air could handle. Golly folks, I gotta tell ya, no one from the hospital has ever approached us about buying our land, but if they are interested would someone let them know that maybe, just maybe, we would consider it. Oh shucks, the land they bought was on the south side of Sunset Drive. Not on the north side as

And speaking of followers, hat’s off to Lew Sellers on winning a seat on the city commission a few weeks ago. We wish him well and look forward to watching him deal with the NIMBY’s (Not In My Back Yard) loonies, CAVE men (Citizens Against Virtually Everything, and Golly, do they hate that acronym), the forever nay slayers, distorters and disrupters and of course the respectable people that know he will do the right thing for the entire community.

And speakLEW SELLERS ing of politics: My fairy godmother told me that the South Dade Democratic Club got involved in the recent election and helped Lew Sellers gain a seat on the dais. That might explain how Bicycle Bob, the one-man election guru, passed out flyers that had things on it like, “Rene Guim, the Republican, He voted for Bush two times.” And then the word

“Republican” was repeated many times on the 8 1/2 x 11 flyer that was passed out to all the Democratic homes throughout our very liberal city. And the way that flyer was composed, one might think that there was something wrong with being a Republican. Not that there is, and I must admit, I’ve met a couple in my life and overall, they’re not too bad, just as long as you keep your distance from them... you know, that icky stuff might rub off on ya. By the way, I don’t know what party affiliation any of the recent candidates have, do you? And by the way, when I asked Bob if he was a member of the Republican Party, he just smiled and smiled and smiled.

And speaking of family members, on Father’s Day I visited my dad, who is in a nursing home, and I gotta tell you, it is always a humbling and sobering experience to walk through those hallways and past those very elderly people who are sitting in their wheel chairs, staring where I don’t know, and waiting for what I cannot

imagine. As I walk past them, I reflect on that each one of them was someone’s daughter or son or perhaps a sister or brother or a mom or dad and it is then that I walk faster, so that I don’t get too caught up in the emotional aspect of this stage of their lives. Then I proceed to the room where my father has been for a couple of years. My dad, who suffered a stroke nearly a decade ago, still has the strength of a bull, and although he only says a few words, we communicate quite well, as he says “Weelllllllllll” which means, “It’s your turn to talk,” which I do and catch him up on the things going on in my life. And we share as best we can and then it is the dreaded, yet welcomed, time to leave and as we each finish visiting with each other and as my heart breaks seeing him in his declining years, I kissed him goodbye and said “I love you, Happy Father’s Day.” I then dried my tears and walked back down that same hallway, as fast as I could, knowing that one way or another, sooner or later I will be back.

Trustees serve without compensation for staggered terms of three years. There are six vacancies for the 2009 appointment process. South Florida groups help others overcome challenges Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB The “No Barriers Festival” gave Team Paradise an opportunity to showcase its Paralympic program in front of 400 people with physical challenges, all taking place at their home dock at Shake-A-Leg in Coconut Grove. Top on the list of goals for the week was bringing about awareness for Paralympic sailing and Team Paradise, with the hopes of finding more potential sailors who would like to get involved.

Gold Medal Olympian Sailor Magnus Liljedahl, the brainchild who created the Team Paradise program, reports that first time skipper and paraplegic veteran Darrel Kubacz and local amputee sailor Richard Hughes won the final event for the week, a three-race series in the Sonar class. Elizabeth Kratzig’s onboard coaching added to the talented dous success.

While Darrel lives in Arizona, he is keen to anxious to start sailing with Team Paradise on a regular basis. This will be one of many challenges for Darrel who has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, despite being a T4 paraplegic. Richard Hughes used to sail both Sonar and 2.4, but stopped about 10-years ago. He is now back and Liljedahl likes to think that Team Paradise had something to do with that. For more information on this remarkable program, go online to www.teamparadise.org.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida’s (EFOF) “Walk the Talk for Epilepsy 2009,” on May 3rd, raised $125,000 during the held at Miami’s Tropical Park and Hollywood Beach. Amazingly, the top fundraisers for the event were among the youngest: 9-year-old Olivia Davis and 5-year-old Ella Rubinson,

who raised $13,406 and $10,366 respectively.

Funds will benefit EFOF to provide many valuable services to the more than 360,000 Floridians with epilepsy and their families, regardless of their financial situations.

While Olivia Davis recently had brain surgery and could not attend the event, her family accepted her award, a cape for being a hero, on her behalf. Rubinson, who has epilepsy, and her 8-year-old brother (Noah Rubinson), who raised the second highest dollar amount of $10,366, were also presented with capes.

Our Kids of Miami-Dade/Monroe, Inc., the local lead agency for child welfare in Miami and the Keys, hosted its annual graduation ceremony on June 18, at the University of Miami for more than 100 students in state foster care who are graduating from high school or trade school. Two hundred guests gathered to celebrate this milestone for students who have fought against the odds to obtain their diplomas and degrees.

UM President Donna Shalala, President gave the keynote address. Other special guest speakers included Rep. Oscar Braynon II, Florida House of Representatives; Kionne McGhee, Assistant State Attorney, MiamiDade State Attorney’s Office and Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent, Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Gerrymandering: 200-year-old legislative manipulation R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The U.S. Constitution requires the state legislatures redraw congressional district boundaries every 10 years. The Constitution also requires a census be undertaken every 10 years specifically for the purpose of adjusting the number of congressional districts to which each state is entitled.

Seizing upon this constitutional mandate, political parties in power redesign the boundaries of the state’s congressional districts to insure the reelection of the member of their parties. Republicans, when in power, do so to protect their party members, as do Democrats when they are in power.

A little less than 200 years ago Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry signed a bill that created a district shaped like a salamander. In some locations the district was only two city blocks wide, but it did bring together sufficient members of

the governor’s party to guarantee that they retained their elective positions. Thus the phrase “gerrymander,” was named after Governor Gerry.

The United States Supreme Court, in 1986, ruled that partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional when the electoral system is arranged in a manner that will consistently degrade a voter’s influence on the political process. The Voting Rights Act of 1965, notwithstanding the 1986 ruling by the Supreme Court, encouraged the creation of predominantly minority districts to encourage the election of minority members to political office.

Jump forward to 2009. A proposed Florida constitutional amendment is circulating the state for signatures that will mandate that congressional districts may not be drawn with the intent to favor a party or incumbent. It requires that districts must maintain the equal opportunity of minority communities to elect representatives of their choice and to participate fully in the political process.

It further states that districts must be contiguous and to the extent possible compact and adhere to existing local boundaries. This addresses districts cur-

––– VIEWPOINT ––– rently wandering across the state to bring together far separated communities to favor a political party.

The proposed constitutional amendment would guarantee that the act of redrawing districts would be transparent and open to public view. If citizens felt that legislators still were attempting to gerrymander districts in their favor, voters could challenge their actions in court. And, the courts would have full authority to amend the proposed new boundaries.

Previous challenges to gerrymandering tactics were lost in the Florida Supreme Court where the justices ruled, properly, that community boundaries were not constitutionally required. The proposed amendment to our state constitution would add that requirement.

Rumberger, a Republican, in obtaining signatures to make sure the proposed constitutional amendment gets on the ballot.

South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu, who was not in office when the contract was signed, took exception with that explanation.

“That’s not an accurate statement,” Feliu said last week. “If anything, they’ve already said what they’re going to do and that was it. We have no say in that. They run their program their way, the way they see fit. I believe the bottom line is that they don’t have the money or the intention of building it.

A reasonable amount of time has passed and they are not in compliance with the contract.”

Feliu stated that, as far as he knew, there had been no contact from the YMCA, and that there was nothing the city was going to be doing on the property there that would conflict with the Y’s plans.

The Young Men’s Christian Association of Greater Miami signed an agreement in July of 2005, selling their property and improvements at 4300 S.W. 58th Avenue [South Miami Park] to the City of South Miami for the sum of $2.75 million.

Part of the agreement to sell the facility included an agreement for the city to lease a portion of the property back to the YMCA so that they could continue to run their programs there, and in turn the YMCA would make renovations to the facility at the YMCA’s expense involving a number of improvements to the downstairs locker rooms, repairs and

cleaning of the pool, exterior painting and additional grounds work.

YMCA officials held a community meeting at nearby David Fairchild Elementary School on Monday October 29, 2007, to meet with residents of the neighborhood and brief them on their plans, unveiling architectural renderings of the proposed new structure, a beautiful 35,000 square foot Family YMCA estimated to cost roughly $8 million.

The new two story complex would include a new pavilion, Wellness Center, Airnasium, lobby and administration area, child watch area, a Kid’s Adventure Center, two Community Multipurpose rooms, two Group Exercise Studios and new locker areas for both families and individuals.

There would also be areas for future expansion.

The old buildings, which had been damaged during the hurricane season of 2005, were demolished not long after that meeting, but no further work has been done in the year and eight months since then.

Charlotte Donn further commented on the matter, regarding the effect the recession is having.

“Obviously the economy is impacting everybody, including the city,” said Donn. “So that’s an even stronger reason why we need to be working together with them, so between the two of us we can bring the best facility — the best use of that property — to the entire community.”

BY BETH COHEN The Family Resource Center of South Florida hosted its 13th Annual Lawyers Strike Against Child Abuse Bowling Tournament on June 13 at Bird Bowl in Kendall.

Lawyers and other professionals came dressed to impress in their team shirts while showing off their bowling skills to raise funds to help prevent and treat child abuse and neglect through the strengthening of families. The tournament raised more than $30,000 for the organization, and more than 250 participated.

Adorno & Yoss LLP took home first and second place trophies, and City National Bank was awarded a third place trophy. The bowling pin trophies were painted by renowned artist and Family Resource Center board member Ed King. During the “Rock & Bowl” style tournament, attendees enjoyed lunch and music provided by Bird Bowl. More than 70 items were donated for the event’s silent auction and raffle, which included restaurant and salon certificates, cameras and sports memorabilia.

“This year’s bowling tournament was such as great success,” said Sharon Liebman, Family Resource Center’s chair of the event’s planning committee and attorney with AT&T. “The Family Resource Center is extremely grateful to the law firms and other businesses that came out to raise funds and awareness

about child abuse and neglect.”

Event sponsors included Carnival Cruise Lines, Dade County Bar Association/Young Lawyers Section, City National Bank of Florida, BNY Mellon Wealth Management and DKM Skincare.

“This is the Family Resource Center’s largest and most anticipated event of the year,” said Family Resource Center executive director Oren Wunderman. “We are so grateful to our sponsors, staff, board members, volunteers and donors for their hard work and dedication to the Family Resource Center.”

All proceeds for the event are dedicated towards providing gap funding to support the operational costs of the Family Resource Center. These funds maintain the organization’s programs, which serve more than 4,000 adults and children each year.

The Family Resource Center is driven by the principle that nothing is more fundamental to a community than the safety and well being of its children. Its goal is to prevent and change dysfunctional parent/ child interaction patterns, promote positive self-concepts, and build healthy relationships to prevent child abuse and neglect through family support, crisis intervention, housing location, family preservation, parent education and counseling.

Father-son team to coach soccer program at Columbus High School

BY CRISTINA CRUZ Mario Concha Jr. has accepted the position of head coach of Christopher Columbus High School’s varsity soccer team.

Mario comes to Columbus with a great asset; his father Mario Concha Sr. will serve as his assistant coach. Mario Sr. was a professional soccer player for 15 years, playing for several international teams representing Argentina, Bolivia and the United States. Mario Jr. previously worked at Columbus as the varsity assistant coach under Luchie Gonzalez, also a former professional player. Together they led the Columbus Explorers to the regional finals this past year.

Mario Jr. began his soccer career at age 14 playing in various competitive Miami clubs such as West Kendall, Strike Force and Light House. He played for Miami Killian High School and St. Thomas University. While at St. Thomas he gained national ranking (No. 4) and trained with the Bolivian Under 20 Youth National Team. After college, he played with the Miami Breakers USISL and trained with two of Bolivia’s First Division Popular Club teams (Strongest FC and Aurora FC).

Among Mario Jr.’s accomplishments is leading Varela High School’s varsity soccer team to win the state and national championships in 2007. He also recently coached the Pinecrest Premier U10 Girls Travel Team to win the Dade Regional Jamboree Championships and the Soccer Paradise FC Aventura Team to win the U17 FYSA Dade League Finals.

Because Mario Jr. was the assistant varsity soccer coach and the JV head soccer coach at Columbus last year, he knows all the players and he really relates to them, having played high school and college soccer locally.

“I’m very excited to be a part of Columbus and look forward to building the team to be a soccer powerhouse in Dade County,” Mario Jr. said. “I’m also excited about working with my father; we really complement each other and this will benefit the program.”

Synergy HomeCare opens its first location in Florida

Lucia Salazar de Robelo’s family history may read like a screenplay but it’s far from it; it’s 100 percent real and it has shaped her into the person she is today.

Salazar de Robelo is taking the next step in an already impressive career path by opening Synergy HomeCare, 6855 SW 81 St. in South Miami, the first of 25 Florida offices the company plans to open during the next three years.

Salazar de Robelo grew up in Nicaragua but after the revolution in 1979, her father — a coffee grower who organized other farmers against the Sandinistas — sent her, her mother and three siblings to the U.S. for protection. Their temporary relocation quickly turned permanent as Lucia’s father was killed within months and the Sandinistas expropriated the family’s farm, money and even the children’s toys and dog, forcing the family to band together in the U.S. to make ends meet.

Lucia met and married a fellow Nicaraguan, Jorge Robelo, and although the pair built a comfortable life in the U.S. — Jorge worked his way up from a sales position at a local Home Depot in Miami to become the chain’s senior IT coordinator for the Southeast at its corporate headquarters in Atlanta — they felt a responsibility to return to their home country.

When they returned to Nicaragua in 1994, the Robelos were met with economic depression but invested their resources to bring about change and hope. They started a mail-order company, which grew to more than 150 employees, launched the third Internet provider in the country and opened a furniture store before Lucia was recruited to establish ProNicaragua, an organization promoting foreign investment in Nicaragua.

Her work with ProNicaragua, bringing $230 million into the country, impressed many including President Enrique Bolanos who asked her to become the country’s Minister of Tourism. Salazar de Robelo held this position for two years but when the government and political landscape shifted, Lucia was recruited by U.S.-based Muro Group, a private sector healthcare

management company, as its vice president of legal compliance. In early 2009, the Robelos decided the time was right to move back to the U.S. to pursue a new venture and help a new group of individuals with Synergy HomeCare.

“Having worked in so many different fields over the years, we wanted to continue our commitment to helping others while controlling our own destinies, and found Synergy to be the perfect combination,” said Lucia, 42.

Kendall Animal Clinic vets find joy in caring for pets

BY LEE STEPHENS Being veterinarians is a joy for the doctors at the Kendall Animal Clinic.

Dr. Richard Rogoff has been practicing veterinary medicine in Miami since 1970 and has been in the Kendall area almost from the start. He began his Kendall practice in the Kendall Mall at the Kendall Animal Hospital and then moved across the street to the Kendall Animal Clinic, 10521 N. Kendall Dr., Suite E-101, after Hurricane Andrew severely damaged the shopping center in 1992.

Prior to the arrival of Hurricane Andrew, Dr. Deborah Colker worked with Dr. Rogoff at the Kendall Animal Hospital.

“We both love what we do,” Dr. Colker said.

When they moved across the street, the two became partners in the new clinic.

“We’re both small-animal practitioners,” Dr. Rogoff said. “I have a special interest in dermatology and Dr. Colker has a special interest in feline medication and surgery.”

UMH names CNO Zambrana as chief operating officer

boyfriend bought a 27-foot sailboat and cruised to the Bahamas. Upon their return to Vero Beach, she launched her own local ad agency and ran it until starting a family two years ago.

New Olive Garden features Tuscan farmhouse design

BY KATIE LENNON Olive Garden was scheduled to open its newest Tuscan Farmhouse design restaurant on Monday, June 29, 4 p.m., in Homestead Pavilion, 2575 NE Eighth St. in Homestead. This is the first Tuscan Farmhouse design Olive Garden to open in Miami-Dade County.

About 160 jobs have been created with the opening of the 246-seat, 7,534square-foot restaurant that is expected to contribute to the state’s restaurant industry growth. According to the National Restaurant Association’s 2009 Industry Forecast, restaurant sales in Florida are expected to grow 1.8 percent this year.

“Homestead’s reputation as a familyoriented community makes it the ideal location for the newest member of Olive Garden’s family of local restaurants,” said Valerie Insignares, executive vice president of operations for Olive Garden.

Riserva di Fizzano restaurant in Tuscany, Italy. Olive Garden design teams traveled to Italy regularly to work with Italian architects Fabio and Lucia Zingarelli to create a restaurant that authentically recreated the warmth and simple beauty of a farmhouse in Tuscany.

The Homestead Olive Garden has a rustic stone exterior, typical of the buildings in the Italian countryside, and an interior accented by Italian imports designed to make the dining experience here a tribute to the restaurant’s Italian inspiration. Ceilings supported by exposed wood beams, stone and wood accents throughout, and

terra cotta tile highlight the interior.

The bar top is crafted from lava stone, then hand-painted by artisans in Italy with a design created exclusively for Olive Garden. Vibrant imported fabrics decorate windows and dining seats, hand-painted plates designed by Lucia Zingarelli adorn rustic stone and stucco walls, and the lighting fixtures are all distinctly Italian.

“At the Homestead Olive Garden, there is an atmosphere of Italian hospitality,” said Jimmy Lipps, general manager. “We delight our guests with a genuine Italian dining experience through fresh, flavorful food, paired with a great glass of wine.”

To recognize Lipps’ role as head of the Olive Garden family in Homestead and to emphasize the importance the company places on its general managers, Olive Garden honored Lipps by setting his name in stone. Travertine marble imported from Tuscany was chiseled with Lipps’ name and placed prominently by the front door.

Here’s how to beat the heat and stay safe this summer

BY CRISTINA ARMAND The longest day of the year may be behind us, but summer has just begun, and in Miami it is just starting to heat up. We are fortunate enough to live in a city that enjoys a warm climate year round, but summer days can become insufferable.

Fortunately, the body has its own built-in way to keep cool. Heat escapes the body by perspiration through the skin. If the body does not cool properly or enough, a heat-related illness can occur, and it can become serious or even deadly if not treated quickly.

Those most at risk are the elderly and children under the age of 5.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue wants everyone to enjoy a safe summer by remembering the following tips: • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool fluids throughout the day, but avoid those that contain caffeine, alcohol or high sugar content since they actually contribute to dehydration and make a heat-related illness worse.

• Keep cool. Stay indoors in an air-

conditioned place and limit your outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours, avoiding the mid-day sun.

• Dress for success. Dress for the heat by wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun’s energy. Wearing a hat or using an umbrella also can help.

• Don’t sweat it. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Also try to exercise in the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning.

• Eat right. Eat small meals more often and avoid foods high in protein that increase metabolic heat.

• Pamper your pets. Don’t forget your animals. Keep them in an air-conditioned area if possible and provide plenty of fresh water.

• Can the Car. Never leave anyone alone in a closed, parked vehicle. It takes only 10 minutes for the temperature to rise 19 degrees in a hot car. In 20 minutes, it rises 29 degrees.

On average, heat waves kill more people in the U.S. than all other natural disasters combined. Heat-related illnesses usually progress in stages, so if you catch it at an early stage, you should be able to prevent the development of a life-threatening situation.

Victims of heat-related illness should be moved to a cool place and given cool water to drink. Ice packs or cool damp cloths should be applied to the skin. If

the person refuses water, vomits or loses consciousness, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Remember that in order to stay safe and healthy throughout the South Florida summer, you should beat the heat by staying hydrated and trying to plan outdoor activities during early morning or late afternoon hours.

LET’S TALK CARS Want a small car that’s sporty and practical, fun to drive and gets excellent fuel economy (28/37 mpg)? Check out the latest version of the Mini Cooper, now available as a convertible.

The latest hardtop edition of the Mini Cooper made its debut in the 2007 model year, although earlier generations have been around since 2000 (the original Mini debuted in the late 1950s). The two versions are similar, but there are subtle differences. For example, the headlights of the latest models are rounder and the hood is flatter, while the grille is more prominent and the turn signals have been integrated into the headlight clusters. To the rear, the taillights are wider and there’s a wider trim strip on the hatch.

For 2009, the Mini Cooper is offered as a two-door hatchback hardtop, a four-

seat convertible and something with a longer wheelbase that resembles a small station wagon dubbed the Clubman. The hardtop was redesigned for the 2007 model year, while the convertible debuts as a 2009 model. Two trim levels are available, the standard Cooper and the highperformance Cooper S. Fog lights, a black grille insert, hood scoop, rear bumper inserts and rear spoiler wing distinguish the Cooper S from the Cooper.

Both standard models are powered by a normally aspirated 1.6-liter, 118 hp four-cylinder engine, while the Mini Cooper S models come with a turbocharged 172-hp version of the same engine and clock 0-60 in 6.5 seconds.

An oversize round speedometer sits in the center of the dash and dominates the interior. A tachometer is mounted on the tilt/telescoping steering column and it moves when the column is adjusted. Standard models come with leatherette upholstery, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, heightadjustable front passenger seat, splitfolding rear seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, air conditioning, power windows, power locks, AM/FM/CD/MP3

six-speaker stereo and remote keyless entry. The hardtop ($18,550) also has a rear wiper and defogger and P175/65R15 all-season tires on alloy wheels, while the convertible ($23,900) comes with P195/55R16 run-flat tires on alloy wheels.

The Mini Cooper S hardtop ($21,950) and convertible ($26,800) come with a stiffer suspension, performance exhaust system, 16-inch alloy wheels (17-inch wheels are an option) with 195/55R16 all-season run-flat tires; fog lights, a black grille insert, hood scoop, rear bumper inserts and rear spoiler.

The John Cooper Works (JCW) hard-

top ($28,550) and convertible add a more powerful 208 hp version of the turbocharged engine, as well as larger brakes, firmer suspension and P205/45R17 run-flat tires.

All models come standard with a sixspeed manual transmission, while a sixspeed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual shift controls is optional ($1,250) for all but the JCW models.
