The Prescription Discount Card is made available to residents by the City of South Miami in collaboration with the National League of Cities (NLC) and is made possible through the City of South Miami membership in NLC. The card is free to all City of South Miami residents, regardless of age, income or existing health insurance. By using this card you may save an average of 20 percent off the regular retail price of prescription drugs at participating pharmacies.

Senator Dave Aronberg came by our office recently and wanted a really fresh copy of his favorite local newspaper the South Miami News, and we took him to the press room so he could get the local news, hot off the press. Senator Aronberg, whose district includes Palm Beach County, is running for Attorney General.

Went for a drive through downtown South Miami on Saturday morning, oh, around 7 a.m., and the city was already starting to wake up. Leading the way were some 30 or so boot camp athletes of all ages and fitness levels.

There they were on SW 73 Street, near the First National Bank of South Miami, running from one end to the other of the course, and at each end there was a different exercise. Like push-ups, or perhaps that is singular, on one end and lifting a bar on the

other, and then they run back to the other side and repeat the process. Not sure what part of the routine I saw, but there were still smiles on just about everyone’s face. That is except for the one guy who was standing there slightly bent over with his hands on his waist, catching his breath. And then I thought I heard someone yelling at him, “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.” It so reminded me of back when…. Well, folks, if you’re looking for a boot camp that is made for ALL fitness levels, one where “You can do it,” and for young folks too… well for all walks of life, you just might want to call Ed Delatorre. It’s got to be a record...

Had lunch the other day over at Fox’s with Nick Poulos and Grant Miller (my brother) and we couldn’t help but notice this very nice lady and two of her friends enjoying each other’s company and lunch as well. As we looked at them, we wondered out loud how long these nice ladies had been coming to Fox’s. As we contemplated the answer, two of the ladies were already headed out the door, so, as not to be outdone by the octogenarians, Grant went over and asked the remaining lady how long she had been coming to Fox’s.

It was then that we stared in utter amazement, when Ms. Vera Carter said “Well, I’ve been coming here since 1948.”

Yup, 61 years of Fox’s food and local very local friendships right there on US1, and by the way, George Wilson, the owner of Fox’s, was there during our impromptu “interview” and he kept nodding his head and said that he known Ms. Carter for most for those years, too.

chronicity, first time diner Maria Cazares, the VP of Awakenings Community Mental Health Center, walked into the dining room and was welcomed by Ms. Carter and a few minutes later there we were also having a friendly chat with her as well. Maria, who said that she “has never felt so welcomed,” was with Jorge Vidal, and was all gushy with the down home, folksy and very friendly family atmosphere that Fox’s is known for and promotes.

So, my hat’s off to Ms. Carter for being so spry and for being such a wonderful supporter of this locally owned business, and for Maria, who just happened to be at the right place at the right time to be welcomed to Fox’s by Ms. Carter.

And by the way, Fox’s is a long time hang out for folks, like retired Judge Dick “CP” Lantz and his wife Betty and Gus & Lola Efthimiou, and I also hear that South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu loves Fox’s, too.

Area clubs are doing good work in the community Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB On July 1, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) held a meeting at their clubhouse with a distinctive patriotic theme appropriate for the coming Independence Day weekend. This new club project entails sending a variety of much needed items to our local National Guard troops serving overseas. Speaking of good projects, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables Rotarian of the Year, Judy Pantoja, continues to organize an amazing variety of community outreach projects for the Club. In fact, a group of Rotarians will be at the VA for Veteran’s Bingo on July 18, will be serving lunch at Camillus House on August 8, and are scheduled to do a Coastal Clean up on September 19, and that is just the tip of the iceberg for this industrious group.

Other Rotary Clubs interested in joining these efforts, are welcomed.

What do hospital emergency rooms really cost?

R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Last week I told you about my visit to a local hospital emergency room in hope of finding out why I couldn’t stop coughing. I told you that the charge for the visit was a little over $9,000. I wrote that from memory. The actual charge was $10,158.

My co-payment was $50, so at first I figured “that’s okay, Medicare and my Medicare supplement will pay the difference.” Then I started thinking about costs, wondering just how much it would cost if I was really sick and was confined for a week’s stay in the hospital. Then I started to think what would happen if I were under 65 and didn’t have any form of medical insurance? How would I ever pay the bill? $10,158 for six hours – what would a week’s confinement cost?

I got on the telephone and called my Medicare supplement provider. I wanted to verify the hospital charge for my emergency room visit for bronchitis.

My supplement provider confirmed $10,158.

“Of course we don’t pay the full amount of the billing.”

I asked how much they will pay. “$2,603,” was the answer.

“Does that mean that I owe the difference?”

They told me that the claim computation statement I will receive will designate the difference as “excluded costs.” I was told that was a synonym for charge off. It’s just a charge the hospital calculates hoping that someone might pay the full bill.

I pulled an old statement from my Medicare supplement company and found on their breakdown the words “excluded costs.” This is the charge the guy on the telephone said was a charge off for the hospital. Yet, reading further in their statement I found a sweat-producing statement elaborating on the term “excluded costs.” It reads in effect you (that’s me) might be responsible for paying the excluded costs. That’s scary!

I asked myself what would happen to a guy, without medical insurance, if he received a similar bill for services in the amount of $10,158?

––– VIEWPOINT ––– Could he be expected to pay the $10,158?

My next call was to an attorney friend of mine who is familiar with medical billings. I asked him about the hypothetical guy without medical insurance and a bill for $10,158 for services rendered in an emergency room.

The attorney’s answer was simple. “Did he sign a statement at the time of admission to the emergency room that he would be responsible for charges? I’ll bet he did. And, if he did, he could be held responsible.”

I can hear the rebuttal argument.

“Okay, if the guy didn’t have insurance he could always look at it by saying “the money I saved on insurance premiums will now be spent on the emergency room bill.” Good argument, but what if the hospital bill was $50,000 or $100,000?

I wish I had asked the guy from the

Medicare supplement company how private insurance carriers would treat such a bill? I still don’t know the answer to that question.

The billing questions arising from a simple visit to an emergency room are mind boggling. And, I am not saying that the hospital is wrong. When I hear the cost of medical testing equipment and the short time to amortize that cost, the hospital might be right.

I don’t envy our President and Congress in trying to figure out how to provide coverage for all of us without our nation going broke.

Schools become an anchor in a community, a place of refuge for children and their families. When difficult economic choices must be made, many children in private schools return to public schools. When money is tight, children eat their breakfasts and lunches in school.

In school, children can rely on routine, orderliness, and a place of stability when their own home environment may be in flux. A child knows what to expect from day to day in school.

Now that summer is here and school is out, many parents face difficult choices about what to do with their children.

Because both school and social service budgets are slashed, many spaces in summer school programs and camps have been lost, so parents cobble together as best they can a way to have their children watched. Sometimes it is television that is the watcher as children far too young sit inside behind locked doors.

Many parents are already counting the days until our schools reopen.

Their reasons might be selfish, but their need is real.

When the school doors reopen, our children will return. What will they face upon that return? Our school board has the basis to ensure our students return to schools that have the resources to welcome them.

In tough times, it is more important than ever that our students have the resources they need. They need the books and art supplies, the paper and musical instruments, the baseballs and basketballs and footballs that are part

Martinez was hoping for so that more county residents would be able to benefit from his Fifth Annual Health and Safety Expo at the Miami-Dade County Fair and Expo Center’s E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion on Coral Way at 109th Avenue.

More than 2,000 county residents received free health checkups for glucose, high blood pressure, HIV, hemoglobin, cholesterol, and much more.

Hundreds of children also received free immunizations and the Epilepsy Foundation gave out 700 helmets to promote bicycle safety.

In past years, the expo attracted some 2,000 attendees who received medical exams and consultations from healthcare professionals representing the Miami-Dade County Health Department, Jackson Health System, Baptist Health South Florida, Borinquen Health Care Clinic, and

Community Health of South Florida.

This year that number increased to 2,100 attendees who were able to visit the more than 100 exhibitors and service providers who offered services and medical care at the expo.

This year, representatives from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida had information on the new Miami-Dade Blue medical insurance program, which Commissioner Martinez announced last month. The three-year pilot program offers comprehensive medical insurance at affordable monthly rates to Miami-Dade County residents who are struggling with the high cost of insurance and do not qualify for government health programs.

“Unfortunately, healthcare becomes a luxury for people who simply cannot afford regular doctor’s visits,” said Commissioner Martinez. “The annual Health and Safety Expo allows residents to seek medical care and advice from professionals in our community and take the initiative in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”

Alper JCC fundraiser to feature Magill’s ‘Sex and the Animals’

BY SHEILA STIEGLITZ Miami Metrozoo’s Goodwill Ambassador Ron Magill presents his hilarious and critically acclaimed adults only show, “Sex and the Animals,” on Sunday, July 19, 7:30 p.m., at the Alper JCC. Magill’s classic performance, mixes a slide show with little-known scientific facts that help to illustrate the magical courtship and breeding behaviors found throughout the animal kingdom.

More than 20 years ago, the irrepressibly cheerful Helene Leibowitz was working as the JCC adult program director and during that time befriended Ron Magill. How appropriate that this joyful woman decided to bring Magill’s “Sex and the Animals,” a show that is filled with laughter, to the center.

The program was warmly received and, over the next few years, there were several return engagements.

New Busway park-ride lot opens in Cutler Bay

There’s good news for South MiamiDade commuters looking for relief from gridlock and the latest jump in gas prices.

Miami-Dade Transit is opening a new 456-space Busway Park and Ride lot at SW 204th Street and 112th Avenue in Cutler Bay. County commissioners performed the official ribbon cutting on Friday, July 10.

Located next to the Target shopping center, the new lot replaces the 95-space lot at SW 200th Street, helping alleviate the heavy demand for parking along the popular South Miami-Dade Busway, which enjoys more than 20,000 daily

boardings. The 20-mile-long Busway connects south Miami-Dade County with Metrorail at the Dadeland South station, allowing passengers to save money and time by avoiding traffic congestion on S. Dixie Highway (US1).

“This new Park and Ride lot will fill a growing need as more and more residents discover the benefits of fast, stressfree commuting on the Busway,” said Miami-Dade Transit director Harpal Kapoor. “Our Busway Park and Ride lots usually fill up by 8 a.m. because of the heavy demand, and we know more people would use the Busway if the parking were available. Now it will be.”

‘Christmas in July’ to benefit Kids and Families Foundation

BY OLGA VEGA Motorcycle and hot rod enthusiasts are encouraged to put the pedal to the metal and participate in the “Christmas in July” Annual Bike and Hot Rod Run on Sunday, July 19.

Participants will be led on a policeescorted ride from Peterson’s HarleyDavidson North, 19400 NW Second Ave. to Tropical Park, 7900 SW 40 St. (Bird Road). The event benefits the Kids and Families Foundation, created

by Miami-Dade Commission Vice Chair Jose “Pepe” Diaz to assist pediatric cancer patients as well as children with other chronic illnesses.

Registration for the event begins at 7:30 a.m. at Peterson’s HarleyDavidson. Entry is $10 per person plus a new unwrapped toy. The toys will be distributed to young patients during the December holidays and funds will be used for Kids and Families programs.

Participants also can register for VIP treatment for $50 per person and a new unwrapped toy. This includes up-front positioning during the ride, a pancake breakfast before the ride, and four raffle tickets to win a custom chopper. All riders will depart from Peterson’s Harley-Davidson at 10:30 a.m.

The fun doesn’t end when the ride is done. Tropical Park will open to the public at 10:30 a.m. Riders will be greet-

ed with food, live music, vendors, and more. Attendees not participating in the ride still can head to Tropical Park and pay a general admission fee of $5 per person and a new, unwrapped toy.

Children 12 and under are free.

Bikes & Beauties magazine will present a bike show with the hottest rides in Miami. Car enthusiasts won’t be left out; they’ll be able to see a custom hot rod car show by Jumpin’ Jack Flash.

During the car show, 25 winners will be selected for the best Christmas-decorated car in the ride. Everyone can enter a raffle to win a custom chopper “001” Twister donated by Chopper Nation.

Live entertainment begins at 11:30 a.m. and will include School of Rock, Jenny Love, Local 34, ZZ Not!, and celebrity emcee Doc Reno from BIG 105.9.

Throughout the evening, “Oscars” were presented to several residents in a variety of categories including “Athlete of

the Year,” “Lovebirds of the Year” and “Ambassador of the Year.”

The audience was entertained by Palace Suites residents who drew rave reviews from the crowd for their performances, which included opera and Broadway standards. The Suites Sweets, a trio of residents, also wrote and performed a special song about life at The Palace Suites.

A slideshow capturing the community’s past 10 years of growth was shown.

Since opening in 1999, The Palace Suites has: • Served over 600 residents and families; • Provided full and part-time jobs with benefits for over 500 people, including high school and college students working part-time in the community’s dining room. Miamians go bowling to help save rhinos

BY YURI MITZKEWICH Whether you’re an avid bowler or you can’t tell a bowling ball from a hockey puck, this July 24 one of the world’s rarest creatures needs you to come out and bowl.

The Miami volunteer group, South Florida AAZK (a chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers) is preparing to throw its annual “Bowling for Rhinos” fundraising event. This year the event is taking place at Bird Bowl, 9275 SW 40 St., at 7:30 p.m.

Whether participants roll gutter balls or strikes, 100 percent of their efforts will be going to raise money to help save one of the world’s most endangered animals.

Since 1990 bowlers around the country have participated in the event, now helping to have raised over $2 million for rhinos since it first started. Every year all the profits from these fundraisers go to two important conservation projects: the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, and the International Rhino Foundation, which works globally helping rhinos where they are most at risk. Here in Miami, zookeepers have been helping with the local event ever since the first year, and now have raised more than $40,000, all going to support this important conservation work.

In the beginning concerned zookeepers started organizing Bowling for Rhinos events, because 20 years ago African rhinos literally were on the brink of becoming extinct. Populations of the white and black rhino had sunk to numbers then were estimated to total only a few hundred individuals each. The species easily could have been gone forever, but luckily

for the rhinos, concerned people decided to act to help.

For the black rhino especially, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy played a key role in protecting the animals, and gave them a chance to grow in their numbers. Bowling for Rhinos has played an important part in helping these conservationists on the ground do this important work.

Today, a rhino in another part of the world is facing a similar fate to that their African relatives faced before. While rhino populations in Africa have since grown to a relatively more stable number, another type of rhino now has come as close to extinction as the others had ever been. In the Asian countries of Indonesia and Malaysia, two types of rhino still exist — the Javan and the Sumatran rhino.

These used to exist throughout the region (their range extending from New Guinea all the way to India), but now these rhinos are just holding on in a few isolated and scattered areas. The population of the Sumatran rhino now is estimated to be 300 individuals, and the Javan is thought to number less than 60.

As conservationists have done before, Bowling for Rhinos participants have created a unique opportunity for everyone to help in making a future for rhinos.

Comedic talent from around world featured in improv fest

BY ROBERT HAMILTON The 2009 Miami Improv Festival (MIF 2009) presented by Just The Funny, a weekend festival featuring improv and sketch comedy from around the world, continues to supply the laughs for its July weekend installment on Friday, July 17, and keeps the fun rolling through Sunday, July 19, at the Just The Funny Theater and Training Center, 3119 Coral Way. The Way To A Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach and The Way To Residents’ Hearts Is Through Great Dining Experiences

BY HELEN SHAHAM Q. My husband and I are both in our 80’s. We’re considering a move to a senior living community and find that dining is included as part of the monthly fee.

Since we’ll do most of our dining at the community we are worried that we’ll get bored with the food. How can we be sure they know how to create enjoyable experiences day after day?

A. The dining experience is a common concern for many older adults moving to a senior living community. It may seem a bit hard to imagine eating most of your meals in the same place for an extended period time but rest assured innovative retirement communities don’t just make meals; they make the entire dining experience incredible.

Twice a month, he prepares dishes such as stir fry vegetables, soups and meatballs, taking residents through the food preparation process and cooking stages. Donned in aprons and hats, residents cook along and eagerly look forward to eat the finished products.

GM showcases new Camaro for Miami automotive media

BY RON BEASLEY General Motors rolled out a quartet of striking new 2010 Chevrolet Camaros in late June to give Miami automotive journalists an up-close look at the latest incarnation of the company’s legendary muscle car.

The four new Camaros — in black, Victory Red and Rally Yellow — were fanned out in the parking lot of the Rusty Pelican Restaurant on Virginia Key and available for members of the Miami-based Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA) to test drive along Rickenbacker Causeway.

GM was the sponsor for the June SAMA luncheon meeting and Luciano Nakamura, one of the key designers of the new Camaro, journeyed from Detroit to tell the auto writers some of the secrets behind the development of the sleek new automobile. Nakamura, who was born in Japan and grew up in Brazil, said the new rear-wheel drive Camaro retains much of the look of the original two-door sports coupe design and is based on GM’s Zeta platform.

Nakamura said the new Camaro was developed in the company’s top secret Studio X laboratories in Detroit and that he incorporated design elements from the F22 Raptor fighter jet and the

classic 1969 Camaro to design the new muscle car. But he said he remained true to the original look of the classic Camaro.

Nakamura added that he thought the long hood, short deck and muscular fenders of the latest Camaro, with its squared-oval gauges and instruments, would get the approval of Camaro lovers the world over.

Nakamura said the new Camaro is available in three models — LS, LT and SS — and with a choice of three engines — a 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6 with variable valve timing, standard on LS and LT models, or a pair of 6.2-liter V-8s, including one with Active Fuel Management that helps improve fuel economy by shutting down four cylinders during certain light-load driving conditions. All models can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Ten exterior colors are available and include black, Victory Red, Rally Yellow and Silver Ice Metallic. Red Jewel Tintcoat is optional. The color palette also includes Cyber Gray Metallic, Aqua Blue Metallic, Inferno Orange Metallic, white and Imperial Blue Metallic.

The Camaro is on sale at Chevrolet dealerships across the country.

LET’S TALK CARS The Ford Edge was introduced as a 2008 model, but apparently there was a need for a snazzier version. So, for 2009 Ford has added the Edge Sport to the lineup, targeting consumers who want a more personalized version of the crossover SUV. The Edge Sport is available with 22inch polished aluminum wheels or the standard 20-inch premium painted wheels, both mounted on 40-series Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires. It also comes with an eight-piece, factory-installed body kit that includes a unique front air dam, side skirts, lower door caps and a rear skirt, all finished in body color instead of the dark lower finish on other Edge models. The front air dam comes with integrated fog lamps and a lower grille insert.

The Edge design is highlighted by a distinctive three-bar chrome grille, an aggressively-raked windshield and a slop-

ing rear window with a high-mounted rear spoiler. Quad-beam headlights and a “powerdome” hood accent the front, and all four wheels are pushed out to the corners. A raised beltline emphasizes the sculpted shoulders around the sharp wheel arches.

The Edge comfortably seats five and six-way power adjustable front seats are available. The reclining 60/40-split second-row seat folds to provide a level load floor for carrying equipment in the large cargo area. The Edge can haul items as long as eight feet with the available foldflat front passenger seat.

Under the hood, the Edge has a 3.5liter, 265-hp V-6 engine mated to a sixspeed automatic transmission, a combination that delivers a solid performance and a smooth, quiet ride. The engine has a lightweight, die-cast aluminum block and four-valve-per-cylinder heads for smooth operation at high rpm. The automatic transmission uses a wide gear ratio to deliver good fuel economy and performance. Short first and second gears allow for a quick start and acceleration, while the tall overdrive gears deliver seven percent better fuel economy than a fourspeed automatic.

The Edge’s available intelligent allwheel-drive (AWD) system has been tuned with an emphasis on performance, but is equally efficient in all-weather driving. The system constantly monitors and predicts traction, then delivers torque to all four wheels, even before the wheels begin to slip. An active on-demand coupler can deliver the precise amount of torque to the rear wheels. Paired with available AdvanceTrac traction control, intelligent AWD can transfer torque front to rear and side to side, as necessary.

A panoramic Vista Roof is an interesting option. The large glass forward panel measures 27 by 29 inches and has a tilt-

and-slide opening, while the rear glass panel is fixed and measures 16 by 31 inches. The oversized front panel allows for open-air driving and a wide view of the sky. Twin power-operated cloth shades can be closed simultaneously to block the sun’s ultra-violet rays.

Pricing on the 2009 Ford Edge ranges from $26,635 for SE FWD to $36,605 for the Edge Sport AWD.
