enjoyed Mr. Bluh’s column regarding the county’s “Cone of Silence,” (South Miami News, July 6-12, page 6.) In it, he refers to his weariness over the abuse of power at the county level and lists, among his complaints, the commissioners’ desires to control the county manager’s authority. Indeed, this is a tiresome thing to those who believe that the separation of powers is essential to a healthy democracy. South Miamians should be alerted that something similar is currently being proffered by their elected officials: A proposed change to the charter that would tinker with the CommissionManager form of government we currently enjoy. The mayor and the commissioners, who are part-time legislators, have proposed being involved in the hiring process for city department heads, a duty of the city manager, who is a full-time professional administrator. he South Miami Grey Ghosts tackle football and cheerleading programs have officially started. Although practices began on July 6, South Miami Parks and Recreation Supervisor II, Lorenzo Woodley, said that registration for the two teams will continue through the end of the month. “Most of our boys are returning players, so they know the drill every summer,” said Woodley. “They take a few weeks off after school and then we start conditioning right after the 4th of July.” Over 150 boys, ages 5 – 14, will participate in the Grey Ghost football program this season and over 80 girls will join the cheerleading squads. Both programs depend heavily on donations by community members and businesses. Woodley
