Manatees with a message Around Town are coming soon to SoMi ‘It’s a jungle out

BY NANCY EAGLETON

T

he South Miami Manatee Fest, a free public art event, is coming this winter. Fashioned after the cows of Chicago, the flamingos of Coral Gables and Miami Beach and the Peacocks of Coconut Grove, the manatees of SoMi will brighten the streets of the community while sending a message to protect the environment. This unique, interactive art exhibit was founded by Heather Bettner, president of Prince Media Development, and will be sponsored by South Miami community members and businesses. Sponsor opportunities for Manatee Fest are still available. Bettner, who is also the organizer of the Coconut Grove Peacock Tour, said that a company’s participation in art can be just as powerful as various media placements. “Public art displays lift the profile of the community and unite businesses, citizens and visitors,” she said. “The smiles and

Pictured here is Catalina Roca, one of our graphic designers, on her trip to Berlin. She and 20 other Bachelor of Fine Art seniors from New World School of the Arts enjoyed the opening of the 6th version of Berlin Biennale and various art exhibitions from museums and private collections. Along the way, she took a break to read the news from her favorite paper the South Miami News.

A routine physical some 25 years ago, resulted in a conclusion that I needed to rely on pills for the first time. The doctor prescribed medication for hypertension and I was put in a regimen of three different pills daily in response to my blood pressure having gone to 200+/100+. I have been on blood pressure medication ever since. After getting on the medication I met

Regina and Marshall Cussell who told me all about wheatgrass, and so I ordered the juicer and my first batch of fresh wheatgrass. Here’s what happenned. May 15 was my first day of juicing and drinking 2 oz. of wheatgrass juice. On this day my blood pressure was 208/110. May 22, I wasn’t prepared to read what my blood pressure monitor reported: 130/75. Let’s see what the coming week brings, I told myself.

R u m o r has it that Watson, the escaped monkey at Jungle Island, was headed over to apply for the city manager’s job in South Miami. On the way out, he even convinced Mahesh, the 500-pound Tiger, to be his “protector,” convincing him to hop over a 14foot high fence to head to the City of Pleasant Living. (See photos on pg. 3). But alas! Both changed their minds and after wandering around aimlessly, returned to their cages. Dick Tracy, our private eye, said that while Watson and Mahesh were in ‘lock-down,” a couple of headhunters were asking the pair to reconsider and actually apply for the City Hall post. You gotta know by now that as of press time, the position technically remained open because Hector Mirabile hadn’t gotten final approval of his proposed $140,000 salaried contract. The vote to make Hector become the newest-soon-to-be-former City Manager of the City of Pleasant Living, is set to take place Tuesday, September 21. Nevertheless, the story Around Town is that the little critters at Jungle Island could get credit for time served and if they don’t get the full time City Hall gig, they might consider working as consultants (like Sandy Youkelis.)
