O

n Wednesday, May 25, 2011, the second grade students in the City of Sunny Isles Beach Afterschool Program presented The Wizard of Oz. Parents, teachers and the other students in the Afterschool Program were encouraged to use their imagination, as the gym at the Pelican Community Park was transformed into “Kansas,” and then “Oz,” right before their eyes! Inspired by Stephanie Riboul, second grade counselors Norelli Liguori, Emilie Cartwright, and Brittany Crawford guided the students in developing the idea of doing a play, into a colorful, dramatic presentation, complete with flying monkeys, a field of dancing flowers, a good witch, an evil witch, and, of course, the sparkly red shoes. The students participated in all areas of a real production — auditions, memorizing lines, costume design, set design, and chorography. The students also offered their input on every aspect of the play, including the very creative interpretation of the tornado — 4 students dressed in black and gray twirling across the stage. The students were even taught theatrical terms — stage right, left, and what it means to be “quiet on the set!”

informing all beachgoers with daily beach safety tips, Rip Current awareness, sun protection facts and even giving beachgoers a glimpse of our lifeguard training, including mock rescues. The Ocean Rescue team received many good questions from patrons during the safety week and handed out small souvenirs and gifts to those walking down the beach. A table was set up with all kinds of useful information and learning tools. We had patrons asking us beach safety related questions and we had kids peeking in to chat with the lifeguards and learn useful tips as well as checking out our rescue tools
