n case you missed the last few Sunny Isles Beach City Commission meetings, this “summer summary” can help you catch up on what’s new including decisions affecting future development and quality of life issues as well as recent good news. NEW CITY MANAGER In June, the city welcomed new City Manager Alan J. Cohen following the retirement of former City Manager Rick Conner. Cohen, a restaurateur who served as Mayor of Ithaca, New York from 1996 to 2003 was selected by the Commission based on his “busi-

Fun in the Sun Grand Opening of Heritage Park and 14th Anniversary of the City

T

he City of Sunny Isles Beach served up a spectacular weekend of events to celebrate its 14th Anniversary. Given that parks and public gathering spaces have been a priority for the City Commission, it was most fitting that the festivities kicked off with the dedication of the City’s largest park, Heritage Park on Saturday, June 18, 2011. Once the Honor Guard grasped the attention of the crowd of over 300, City Historian Richard C. Schulman gave the invocation, Janelle Sanchez sang the National Anthem, where a midway game off in the distance provided the backdrop of ‘bombs bursting in air’ at the perfect time. The dedication of the memorial wall included special presentations by Senator Gwen Margolis and Golden Beach Councilwoman Judy Luskin. As Mayor Edelcup spoke of the many amenities of Heritage Park, the fountains came to life and the park was officially opened. Thousands of people enjoyed the variety of songs per-

“W

ay better than last year!” was the exclamation repeated by the event coordinator, Ms. Sandra Block, who could not stop praising the staff from the city who helped her with this successful event. From Sergeant Athanasiou and Corporal Ostrov inspecting and repairing bicycles, to Sergeant Randazzo overseeing the obstacle course, they all worked hard to make this possible. Ms. Block, a Crime Prevention Specialist for the Police Department, and avid cyclist, brought the idea of a “Bike Rodeo” to the city in 2010.
