GRATITUDE-A NECESSARY ATTITUDE By Mayor Eric H. Jones Jr.

lthough we s h o u l d remember the significance of all our holidays, I believe that Thanksgiving is the holiday which should be used for a time of quiet reflection. Let us take a moment during this Thanksgiving holiday season to reflect on our lives and on our blessings. We have endured through some difficult times as a city. Our economy has been relatively stable in the years of recession. Many have family members who are serving our country in foreign lands. Many of us have lost loved ones, or have faced other personal crises. And yet, we are blessed to live in a country where we can learn from, and appreciate, the differences which make us unique. We are free to vote or not vote. We have the choice of education for our children. We have some of the finest medical technology in the world available to us. In America, we have the freedom to travel as we wish, and we have the freedom to worship as we see fit. Additionally, we are privileged to live in West Park, Florida. We are fortunate to have City employees who are committed to providing the best service possible to our citizens. We have excellent schools and teachers who are dedicated to the education of their students. We have a community that is filled with caring individuals and groups, such as our Senior Citizens Care Center, the Mary Kendrick’s Thanksgiving Feast, the City’s Christmas Toy Giveaway, our Back to School Giveaway, our After-School and Summer Programs, our Scholarship Program, etc. People of all races, ages and socio-economic levels come together as we work to
Mayor Eric H. Jones Jr. and the rest of the Commission members presented a framed South Florida Times Newspaper Article to Commissioner Thomas Dorsett. make West Park a nurturing and caring community. In a sense, gratitude is an expression of modesty. In Hebrew, the word for gratitude - hoda’ah - is the same as the word for confession. To offer thanks is to confess dependence, to acknowledge that others have the power to benefit you, to admit that your life is better because of their efforts. That frame of mind is indispensable to civilized society. As you sit down to your Thanksgiving dinner, if you had been a Pilgrim, would you have given thanks? Consider what they had been through, the men and women who broke bread together on that first Thanksgiving in 1621. They had uprooted themselves and sailed for America, an endeavor so hazardous that
published guides advised travelers to the New World, "First, make thy will." The crossing was very rough and the Mayflower was blown off course. Instead of reaching Virginia, where Englishmen had settled 13 years earlier, the Pilgrims ended up in the wilds of Massachusetts. By the time they found a place to make their new home Plymouth, they called it - winter had set in. The storms were frightful. Shelter was rudimentary. There was little food. Within weeks, nearly all the settlers were sick. "That which was most sad and lamentable," Governor William ––––––––––See GRATITUDE, page 3

Carver Ranches Boys & Girls Club Keeping Kids Safe on Saturdays By Vice Mayor Felicia M. Brunson
C
ity of West Park youth between the ages of 6-18 now have a safe and fun place to go on Saturdays. The Carver Ranches Boys & Girls Club, located on SW 44th Avenue, has extended its hours of operation to include each Saturday during the school year. From 11:00AM-3:00PM, children are invited to come to the Club to participate in activities that support common core learning, explore the digital arts, and increase physical fitness. What’s more, children will receive a free nutritious snack, lunch, and take-home snack pack while they are at the Club. Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County (BGCBC) officials hope that the Saturday opening will serve as a solution for parents by keeping their children safe while they are either at work or running errands.
GRATITUDE, from page 1 –– Bradford later recalled, "was that in two or three months’ time, half of their company died, especially in January and February, being the depth of winter, and wanting houses and other comforts; being infected with the scurvy and other diseases. There died sometimes two or three a day." When spring came, Indians showed them how to plant corn, but their first crops were dismal. Supplies ran out, but their sponsors in London refused to send more. The first time the Pilgrims sent a shipment of goods to England, it was stolen by pirates. If you had been there in 1621 - if you had seen half your friends die, if you had suffered through famine, malnutrition, and sickness, if you had endured a year of heartbreak and tragedy - would you have felt grateful? In regions of Mexico hot springs and cold springs are found side by side, and because of the convenience of this natural phenomenon the women often bring their laundry, boil their clothes in the hot springs, and then rinse them in the cold springs. A tourist watching this procedure commented to his Mexican guide: "They must think Mother Nature

is generous to freely supply such ample, clean hot and cold water.” The guide replied, "No senor, there is much grumbling because she supplies no soap." People who are truly thankful don’t complain, they find a reason to be grateful. Let’s not wait to be thankful. Often we are not thankful until after something we need is loss and regained. Our power is shut off, and suddenly we become thankful for electricity. Our garbage is not picked up, and suddenly we become thankful for the garbage collector’s weekly stop. A good friend dies, and suddenly we discover how much he or she meant to us. Our water becomes too polluted to drink and suddenly we appreciate having good water. Why is it that, we take for granted the uncounted blessings of life until they are removed from us? Some things I am Thankful for....... ....The taxes that I pay ....because it means I’m employed. ....The clothes that fit a little too snug ....because it means I have enough to eat. ....My shadow who watches me work ....because it means I am out in the sunshine.
parents work schedules. In other instances, members may go without a meal because their family lacked the financial resources during these challenging times. BGCBC made it a priority to find a way to be able to serve our members on the weekend,” said BGCBC President/CEO Brian Quail. A staple in the West Park community since 1995, the Carver Ranches Boys & Girls Club, led by Club Director Brenda Fulmore, strives to be a true changeagent in the lives of its members. “We want all members to graduate from high school with a plan for the future; demonstrate good character and citizenship by participating in leadership training and community service projects; and engage in sports and other activities that promote living a healthy lifestyle,” said Fulmore. “Opening on Saturdays gives us one more day to assist families in making sure that this happens.” For more information about the Carver Ranches Boys & Girls Club and how you can enroll your child in the Saturday program, please call (954) 967-8787.
....A lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing ....because it means I have a home. ....The spot I find at the far end of the parking lot ....because it means I am capable of walking. ....My huge heating bill ....because it means I am warm. ....All the complaining I hear about our government ....because it means we have freedom of speech. ....The lady behind me in church who sings off key ….because it means that I can hear. ....The piles of laundry and ironing ....because it means my loved ones are nearby. ....The alarm that goes off in the early morning hours ....because it means that I am alive! ....Weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day ....because it means I have been productive. The art of thanks-living is gratitude in action. It is thanking God for the gift of life by living it triumphantly. It is thanking God for your talents and
abilities by accepting them as obligations to be invested for the common good. It is thanking God for all that men and women have done for you by doing things for others. It is thanking God for happiness by striving to make others happy. It is thanking God for beauty by helping to make the world more beautiful. It is thanking God for inspiration by trying to be an inspiration to others. Alex Haley, the author of "Roots," had an unusual picture hanging on his office wall. It was a picture of a turtle on top of a fence post. When asked, "Why is that there?" Alex Haley answered, "Every time I write something significant, every time I read my words and think that they are wonderful, and begin to feel proud of myself, I look at the turtle on top of the fence post and remember that he didn’t get there on his own. He had help." That is the basis of thankfulness - to remember that we got here with the help of God, and that He is the provider of every blessing we have. HAVE A THANKFUL THANKSGIVING. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, GOD BLESS THE CITY OF WEST PARK AND GOD BLESS AMERICA…

t the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month of 2013, we will pause to honor America’s Veterans and celebrate their contributions to our way of life. Few have given more to our Nation than the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces in peace and in war.

Since our nation’s founding, American service members have stepped forward to safeguard liberty for future generations. Generation after generation—well over twentytwo million living Veterans today embody our exceptional character and values as a people. They have answered the call to fight and sacrifice on foreign soil. They have done all that was asked of them and more-- each a line in our Nation’s history, but together many chapters towards today’s future. And as a result, on this Veterans Day, we are closer to prevailing in today’s fights. This country owes a profound debt to all Veterans, and military families. For serving our nation with

Volunteers Needed for the Broward Sheriff's Office Citizen Observer Patrol (BSO - COP) BY COMMISSIONER RITA “PEACHES MACK
As a resident, together with BSO we can be a great team. Our BSO believes that with residents helping the officers spot suspicious activities, they can stop crimes before they are committed. BSO is asking residents to volunteer for the COP Program. BSO's COP Program is a volunteer group sponsored by the Sheriff's Office that uses a simple approach to safeguarding neighborhoods through residents' involvement. COP volunteers are local residents who help BSO fight crime by patrolling their community, looking out for suspicious activity or potential hazards and offering assistance to local residents. Typical assignments in addition to patrol activities include performing checks on unoccupied residences (at the owner's request), checking on elderly or homebound residents (as requested) and reporting potential problems and neighborhood hazards to BSO. COP volunteers wear uniforms and drive specially marked vehicles, adding to the crimefighting presence in the community. I'm asking residents of West Park to volunteer for the COP program. Volunteers must be 18 years of age, pass a background check, possess a valid Florida driver's license, complete at least four hours of the training program and comply with all program policies and procedures. To apply, you may cut-out the application provided in this newspaper or you may call BSO at 954.321.4100. As always, if you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to call me at 954.889.4156.

Storm Drains Help Prevent Flooding
uring a rainfall, water runs across rooftops, down streets and across parking lots and yards, picking up substances along the way. This stormwater “runoff” washes down storm drains, eventually reaching local rivers and streams. Storm drains are the metal grates found on urban and suburban streets, often at corners and on the sides of curbs and gutters.
What is NPDES? The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) - Clean Water Act Section 402
The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) is a federal program that regulates stormwater discharges to the receiving waters of the United States. This program is mandated in the federal Clean Water Act and is delegated to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and local governments (Counties & Cities). An NPDES permit may also include discharge limits based on federal or state water quality standards that were designed to protect designated uses of surface waters, such as supporting aquatic life or recreation. Water quality criteria and standards vary from state to state and site to site, depending on the use classification of the receiving body of water. Most states follow EPA guidelines that propose aquatic life and human health criteria for many of the priority pollutants. The goal is to prevent STORMWATER POLLUTION.
WHAT IS STORMWATER POLLUTION? Stormwater pollution is urban runoff
water that has picked up pollutants as it flows through the storm drain system- a network of channels, gutters and pipes that collect runoff from city streets, neighborhoods, farms, construction sites and parking lots-and empties directly into local waterways. Unlike sewage, which goes to treatment plants, urban runoff flows untreated through the storm drain system. Anything thrown, swept or poured into the street, gutter or a catch basin (the curbside openings that lead into the storm drain system) can flow directly into our channels, creeks, bays and ocean. This includes pollutants like trash, pet waste, cigarette butts, motor oil, anti-freeze, runoff from pesticides and fertilizers, construction debris, paint from brushes and containers rinsed in the gutter and toxic household chemicals.
HOW DOES STORMWATER POLLUTION AFFECT OUR RESIDENTS & BUSINESSES? Contaminated urban runoff is a source of pollution into local waters, and may contribute to beach closures. Litter, leaves and other debris clog catch basins, which cause flooding when it rains. Flooding can damage property (cars, buildings and equipment), create health hazards (fleas, mosquitoes and bacteria) and hurt the City’s image as a desirable place to live and work. It is illegal for businesses without a permit to discharge wastewater or other materials into the storm drain system. You can report illegal storm drain discharge by calling 954-519-1499.

Happy Thanksgiving take for granted. I hope that you will gather with your family and friends and take a moment to reflect, remember, and give thanks. Thanksgiving is a time for families and friends to gather together and express gratitude for all that we have been given, the freedoms we enjoy, and the loved ones who enrich our lives. We recognize that all of these blessings, and life itself, come not from the hand of man but from Almighty God. Every year around Thanksgiving, we are reminded about the things for which we are thankful. As every year, I am thankful for my family, health, friends old and new. I’m thankful for life itself, and everything that we are able to do and accomplish. This is also a time to think about those less fortunate than ourselves. This is the time to consider offering our time to volunteer in our community or making a donation to our favorite charity. There are many volunteering opportunities right here in our city. Let us take a moment during this Thanksgiving holiday season to reflect on our lives and on our blessings. We have endured hardships this past year. Our economy has not been as vibrant as in years past. Property values are low and many are unemployed. Many of us have lost loved ones, or have faced other personal crises. We grieve with our friends
dom as Americans, the love of family and friends. Be thankful for the things in your life that you wouldn't want to live without. It is easier at this time of year. But let Thanksgiving be the start of a new outlook - a reconfigured attitude toward the events in the past and what the future holds. Additionally, we are privileged to live in the City of West Park. We are fortunate to have a Commission and Staff who are committed to providing the best service possible to our citizens. People of all races, ages and socio-economic levels come together annually at the Mary Kendrick’s “Feed the Needy Feast” where they give love offerings to help the seniors in our community. We live in a community that finds time to laugh and enjoy life. We have many blessings, large and small. The list is endless. Only when we begin to take stock, do we realize just how blessed we truly are. I encourage you to also think about our community's needs and find the time, or the money, to give back. I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving, and wish you and your families all the best during this holiday season! Remember to contact me at City Hall with your ideas, suggestions or concerns. I represent you and appreciate your input into the continued success of our beloved city. I can be reached at (954) 889-4164 or email fbrunson@cityofwestpark.org.

Congratulations to the City of West Park’s Super Pee Wee Football Team he City of West Park Saints Super Pee Wee Football Team comprised of 4 and 5 year old children finished their season on Sunday, October 6 at Claude Pepper Park in North Miami. The team participated in the Miami-Dade Broward Super Pee-Wee League, which is a non-profit organization comprised of over 500 youth, and 24 individual associations, serving 4 & 5 year old tackle football players in the Miami Dade and Broward County Areas. The league is an intra-mural, developmental, first stage, non-competitive league which encourages fun and teaches the fundamentals of tackle football. It focuses on the beginner’s stage of youth football and no score is kept, so there are NO winners or losers. The 7th Annual Fun Day Jamboree was a tackle football and cheerleading jamboree for players and cheerleaders ages 4 and 5 years old. Twenty-four (24) teams competed in the jamboree with each team playing two games. This year’s event was in honor of Samuel K. Johnson, longtime Founder and Director of the Super Peewee division who passed away unex-
pectedly this year. Sam was an icon and mentor to the children who passed through the successful program he ran. Coach Sam was a friend and strong supporter of Miami Dade/Broward Super Peewee League and offered the league valuable advice which helped it grow to where it is today. As part of the event, they also hosted a cheer showcase; they played music, offered games, food and fun for the entire audience to enjoy. This year’s culminating jamboree event was set up in an exhibition tournament style where each participating team played several games
and which ends they took team pictures, received individual trophies, and took home a team trophy. We would like to thank our Super Pee-Wee Team comprised of 12 players (Cameron Fermine, Jeremiah Haggins, Dwayne Hayes, Pernell Hayes, Jalen Jackson, Jaden Johnson, Jah'Cari Jones, Jeremiah Ovalles, Javaris Rolle, Sean Saintil, Corey Scott, & Bobby Stokes) and coaches Rosner Saintil & Bobby Stokes. The season was a great success with the children learning the fundamentals of tackle football and was full of many highlights and long-lasting memories. Next year some of these players will move up to our Junior Bandit Division and some will play at this division again next season. Thanks to all the parents and players for making this season as special as it was and we look
fowarto bigger and better things from our young football players on the gridiron next year. For more information about our Youth Football Program or any other programs offered by the City of West Park Recreation Department at 954-985-1990 or via e-mail at cgarcia@cityofwestpark.org.
