Ex: NFA 6/80 Lot 44 ($50,000.00 plus). Toned XF. Beautiful style. Great pedigree. (See enlargement Plate !,page 7.) (30,000-35,000) Euainetus was commissioned by the Syracusan tyrant Dionysius I to create a new ten drachma medaillion, probably to commemerate the expulsion of the Carthaginians from Sicily in 397-396 BC. Similar in design to the Kimonian types, Euainetus left us with his own distinctive artistic coin. The head of Arethusa is especially distinctive, with clean crisp design and graceful natural flowing beauty. Dekadrachms in the style of Euainetus were produced in much larger numbers than those of Kimon. History indicates that Dionysius was a man given to grandeur - identifying himself with Zeus and inviting a form of worship; he was also a writer of poetry and drama. During his long reign the decadrachms became an inflated currency used for the pay of his top henchmen and gifts for his honored guests.
