A group of 1025 late Roman silver, billon and bronze coins from the Oliver's Orchard hoards, found in Colchester, England in May 1983. Selections from the three hoards, totaling 6036 coins, found concealed in pottery jugs buried circa 274 AD in a farmer's field. The majority of the hoards consisted of antoniniani of the Gallic emperors Poslumus through Tetricus I and II, but pieces as early as the 1 st and 2nd centuries AD were also found with them. Those pieces not declared Treasure Trove and retained by the British Museum and other institutions were distributed among the finder and the land owners. This parcel comes from one of thoseshares. Included are six of the denarii, an antoninianus ofLaelianus, several scarcer antoniniani of Quintillus and Marius, and a broad selection of common and scarce antoniniani types starting with Gordian ΠΙ and continuing through to Tetricus I and Π. Numerous pieces would grade VF or better, but the majority show wear and the effects of long burial· Included with the lot are publications from the Colchester Archaeological Trust and the British Museum, 'Coin Hoards from Roman Britain, Vol. VI', describing the hoards in detail. A fascinating historical group. Total 1025 pieces. Average Fine-VF. Sold as is. ( 4 5 ) ש
