Introduction to “The Richard McAlee Collection of Eastern Roman Denarii and Antoniniani” I became fascinated by the silver denarii and antoniniani struck at eastern Roman mints (the “Eastern Mint Silver” coins) as a result of my particular interest in the Roman provincial coinage of Antioch and other Syrian mints. Although most of them do not bear a mint mark (the Flavian issues struck at Ephesus are an exception), in many cases it is possible to attribute the Eastern Mint Silver coins to a specific mint based on clear stylistic similarities to provincial coins which are securely attributed to that mint, e.g., the Antiochene denarii of Hadrian, the Alexandrian denarii of Septimius Severus, and the Antiochene antoniniani of Gordian III and Philip I. In other cases, however, the identity of the mint is much less clear, e.g., the later issues struck under Septimius Severus (generally given to Laodicea ad Mare, which is a plausible attribution but far from certain), the Eastern Mint Silver of Elagabalus (some of which can be linked to Antioch, but many of which may have been produced at one or more Black Sea mints or a mint travelling with the emperor), and the Eastern Mint Silver of Severus Alexander (some of which were apparently struck at an official mint located in the East, and some of which may have been produced at an irregular mint). The largest group of coins in this collection is the Eastern Mint Silver struck earlier in the reign of Septimius Severus. The coins which are not attributed to Alexandria are given in the standard references to mints at Emesa and Laodicea (“Old Style”), but the similarity of their style, epigraphy, and reverse types to the Eastern Mint Silver of Pescennius Niger, which is securely attributed to Antioch, is persuasive evidence for reattribution of these Severan issues to the mint of Antioch. The Eastern Mint Silver issues show that Roman denarii were initially struck in the East in relatively small numbers during the first century, mainly under the emperor Vespasian, and again during the early second century under Hadrian, but were produced in larger numbers at the end of the second century under Pescennius Niger and Septimius Severus. This was followed during the first half of the third century by the minting of antoniniani on a much larger scale, commencing with the later issues of Gordian III, and this foreshadowed the massive production of billon antoniniani at eastern mints and the eventual shift at the end of the third century to a system of multiple mints producing Roman denominations throughout the empire. As with the eastern provincial coinage, part of my fascination with the Eastern Mint Silver is due to the fact that it has been less thoroughly studied than the coinage of Rome and other Roman mints in Europe. There continue to be ample opportunities to discover unpublished varieties, acquire rare types, and add to the storehouse of numismatic understanding. I hope that this collection will provide such opportunities to my fellow collectors and scholars. Richard McAlee August 2020

A Summary of Minting in the East Bill Dalzell The Eastern Mints under the Flavians Under the Flavians, several provincial mints struck Imperial-style denarii, most notably Ephesus in Asia Minor and Antioch in Syria. The Ephesian denarii were predominantly struck in AD 70-71 and AD 73-74, with an additional issue struck at Ephesus or another, uncertain mint in AD 76. These issues are significant in that, unlike most of the coins in this catalog, they tend to bear mint marks: Φ or EΦE on the first two groups, and O or an annulet on the third. In contrast, the series attributed to Antioch lacks any form of mintmark and can instead be attributed by stylistic comparisons to the tetradrachm issues of the city. The earliest Antiochene issues were struck for Vespasian and his son Titus in AD 70, followed by a larger issue in AD 72-73. This later group includes several of the famous “Judaea Capta” types, commemorating Vespasian’s victory in the First Jewish War, of which this collection has a particularly fine selection (For further discussion, see RIC II p. 42-47).
The Eastern Mints under Hadrian The Antioch mint produced Imperial-style denarii from the start of Hadrian’s reign until AD 119. Following that, minting operations in the east ceased until circa AD 123, when a proliferation of as-yet unidentified mints began striking a hodgepodge of sometimes mismatched types. The types selected generally copy those at Rome, with a few types more common in eastern style than Roman. Many of these denarii are stylistically related to the contemporary cistophoric tetradrachms produced in the east. Their production may have been related to imperial visits to the region. (RIC II.3, p. 2)
The Eastern Mints of Septimius Severus The eastern mint denarii of Septimius Severus form one of the most challenging areas of Roman Imperial numismatics. The series can be broken down into five stylistic groups whose mint attributions have inspired heated debate among scholars. Classical Numismatic Group follows the attributions given in RIC, which give the mints as Emesa, Laodicea (old style), Laodicea (new style), and Alexandria. While the Alexandrian attribution is broadly accepted, the denarii of Emesa and Laodicea are subject to no small amount of disagreement. According to RIC & BMCRE, the two issues both appear to begin in AD 193, due to the presence of coins bearing the COS or COS I date in both groups. This date is significant, as the mint of Antioch was at that time under the control of Pescennius Niger. Antioch’s support for Pescennius Niger was not well received by Septimius Severus, and when he retook the city in late AD 193 or early 194, he demoted the city’s status. This demotion, combined with the AD 193 issues, argues against the two “old style” groups being assigned to a mint in Antioch. The city of Laodicea is suggested as a mint due to its increased importance during the reign of Septimius, while Emesa is only hesitantly offered in BMCRE, based on the number of denarii of this style in the Dura hoard, with Zeugma as an alternate source. Coins with legends beginning IMP CAE are assigned to Emesa and L SEPT to Laodicea. The Emesa mint closed around AD 196, at the same time that Laodicea was reorganized and began following the typological conventions of the Rome mint, striking denarii in a crisp new style (RIC IV, p. 80-83; BMCRE p. cxviii-cxxiv). Kevin Butcher challenges these attributions (Coinage in Roman Syria, p. 98-108). First, he argues that the coins bearing the COS or COS I dates are simply COS II issues that were mis-engraved or with the final digit off the flan. Second, he dismisses the division of mints based on obverse legend, suggesting that the Emesa and old-style Laodicea denarii are stylistically quite similar and originated in the same mint. Third, he challenges the idea that Antioch’s status was reduced for very long or that it affected the mint. And fourth, he argues that the new-style Laodicea issues are from an entirely different mint, suggesting a location further west, possibly in the Balkans. The Severan volume of RIC is currently being reworked by Curtis Clay. Though his research remains substantially published, it is frequently discussed online. Clay argues against many of Butcher’s revisions, adhering to the argument that Antioch was stripped of its status, with the mint transferred to another location, namely Laodicea, as that was the administrative center of Septimius in Syria. He also suggests that the “Emesa” issues may be best attributed to Laodicea. (For discussion, see: Curtis Clay, post to “Classical Numismatics Discussion,” Forum Ancient Coins, October 29 2007, 11:24 PM and later, http://www. forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=41113.0) Significant work is yet to be done on this series. Many new varieties must be incorporated into the catalogs, including a good number in this collection. In particular, a die study of the Emesa and Laodicea issues should be able to conclusively prove if any were in fact issued in AD 193, as well as determine if they were struck at one or two locations. For now, the mints of “Emesa” and “Laodicea” should be understood as convention only and subject to change as new information comes out.
The Eastern Mints under Elagabalus & Severus Alexander The mint at Laodicea appears to have closed around AD 202 or 203, and minting of denarii in the east ceased until the reign of Elagabalus. Numerous denarii are known for this reign in a number of styles. In RIC, these issues are given to Antioch without explanation, while BMCRE is more nuanced, noting that there were likely multiple mints striking in the east, with Antioch possibly as one of them (RIC IV p. 26; BMCRE p. ccxli-ccxlv). Stylistic parallels have also been found on provincial bronze issues from Moesia and Thrace (Butcher p. 108). The Antioch attribution, while common in the trade, is clearly inaccurate, and this group is referred to in this catalog as “Uncertain eastern mint.” 6
However, there are two important coins in the McAlee Collection that argue for at least limited minting in Antioch. Lots 193 and 194 demonstrate a clear stylistic link between the denarii and bronze issues of the city, particularly in comparing the eyes, hairstyle, and the bottom edge of the bust. Further study is needed to address this issue, but for now it would appear that at least some of the eastern denarii of Elagabalus should be re-attributed back to Antioch. Under Severus Alexander, the issues appear to be consolidated into a single mint. BMCRE organizes these into four issues: one with a short obverse legend and star on the reverse, two with a longer obverse legend and star, and one with a longer obverse legend with no star, as well as a special “Liberalitas” issue (BMCRE p. 83-86). These coins are generally of very consistent style and are often difficult to distinguish from Rome mint issues, particularly in isolation. A number of the coins given to “Antioch” in RIC were reattributed to an “irregular”mint in BMCRE. These are presented in this catalog as “Uncertain eastern or irregular mint.” Lot 226 includes an interesting group of three die-linked specimens, each with different reverse types, raising the possibility that either the issues are more complex, or that multiple mints were active.
Antioch under Gordian III and Philip I Under Gordian III, the Antioch mint was responsible for striking vast numbers of silver tetradrachms, but the reign also saw the revival of Imperial-style coinage with the production of silver antoniniani in AD 238-239 and again in AD 242-244. Both series are readily distinguishable from Rome on the basis of style, especially by comparing them to the tetradrachms of Antioch. The initial revival of antoniniani in AD 238-239 is probably associated with the emperor’s presence in the region in preparation for a campaign against the Persians, ultimately launched in AD 242. Though a major mint, the selection of types was not as tightly controlled as in Rome. The first series provides fertile ground for the collector, with an array of reverse types, often based on those in use at Rome, and often combined with the popular left-facing portraits, as on lot 231. This is perhaps one of the strongest areas of this already impressive collection, featuring an exceptional number of rare coins in high grade, with many likely to serve as illustrations in future publications of the series. With the second series in AD 242-244, the Antioch mint begins to transition from a major provincial facility to a branch mint of Rome. This issue appears to be significantly larger than the last, with the types neatly divided between three officinae, indicating a higher level of control and organization than had previously been seen, at least among the mint’s Imperial-style issues. The coins can be distinguished by the use of reverse types not seen from the Rome mint, particularly when combined with the near-ubiquitious use of the cuirassed-only bust on the obverse. The coinage of Gordian at Antioch was the subject of Roger Bland’s doctoral thesis (Bland, Gordian), which includes a thorough analysis of the series, a detailed catalog, and a die study. A summary of Bland’s findings is available in Coins of Roman Antioch (McAlee p. 316-319). The organizational trends established during the second issue of Gordian continued to define the Imperial-style issues of Antioch in the reign of Philip I. However, this reign did see the reintroduction of the left-facing bust types, which clearly reach the height of their style and popularity at this time. No adequate study has yet been published on the Antioch antoniani of this reign, though an unpublished type list, prepared by Roger Bland, has circulated privately and online (Bland Study). While this collection is organized by the initial groups and order proposed in the aforementioned study, shortly before publication of this catalog Roger Bland provided a more detailed chronology. Coins with the obverse legend IMP C M IVL PHILIPPVS PF AVG PM belong to the very first issue, dated to AD 244. Most other issues can be dated AD 246-249, with an apparent gap in AD 248. Coins of Philip bearing the tribunician titles TR P III, TR P IIII, and TR P VI date to AD 246, 247, and 248, respectively. Of particular note in this collection, in addition to the well-represented left-facing busts, are several early issues. For Philip I, a small group of antoniniani in lot 246 appears to use a portrait that resembles Gordian III, evidently issued early in the reign. For Otacilia Severa, lot 270 features an extremely rare piece with a long obverse legend.
Antioch after Philip I Significantly less attention has been given to Antiochene coinage of AD 249-253, with the 1949 publication of RIC remaining the standard reference. After the reign of Philip, Antioch operated as a highly organized and structured Roman mint, presaging the reform that would happen across the empire under Aurelian. Officinae began marking their coins with either a series of pellets or the numeral and bust and reverse types remained fairly standard. This progress was thrown into some disarray under the reigns of Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian, with the apparent breakdown of the officina system, as the same types began to appear with different officina marks. The Antioch coinage of these rulers is divided into three issues, two in “fine style” and one in “gross style,” clearly evident when viewing the portraiture and engraving. These issues are dated to 251-252 and AD 253, respectively (Metcalf. “The Antioch Hoard of Antoniniani and the Eastern Coinage of Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian,” in ANSMN 22 [1977]). The reigns of Valerian and Gallienus were examined in detail by Göbl in MIR 36, where he divided the issues given by RIC to Antioch and reassigned many of them to Samosata. Finally, a small group of Constantinian bronzes, lot 305, illustrates the 4th century fate of Antioch as just one of many Roman Imperial mints, mass-producing silver-washed bronze folles. 7

42. CRETE, Koinon of Crete. Trajan. AD 98-117. AR Drachm (18mm, 3.08 g, 7h). Antioch (or Tyre?) mint. IMP CAES NER TRAIA OPTIM AVG GER DAC PART, laureate bust right, slight drapery on shoulder / Diktynna seated left on rocks, holding uncertain object and the infant Zeus; to either side of her, an armed Curete standing left; ΔIKTYNNA above, KPHT in exergue. RPC III 13; Woytek, Bilinguen 1; Svoronos, Numismatique pl. XXXIII, 23-4; SNG Copenhagen 578; BMC 16. Toned. Fine. Rare. ($150) Reportedly found in the Levant. Zeus was the son of the Titans Cronos and Rhea. Cronos, fearing any offspring would usurp his position as principle deity, would swallow each child Rhea gave birth to. Upon the birth of Zeus, however, Rhea tricked Cronos by presenting a swaddled rock in place of the newborn god. Cronos swallowed the rock and Zeus was secretly taken to the island of Crete, where he was reared by nymphs in a cave in Mount Dikte. A popular cult to Zeus Diktaios lasted in the area until the Christian period. The cult of Diktynna predates Mycanean influence in the region. As a virgin goddess associated with nature and hunting (she is credited with inventing a crucial hunting tool, the net), she naturally became associated with Artemis. In one of ancient myth’s numerous perplexing and anachronistic details, she is often described as being the daughter of Zeus and Karme. A note from the collector: The style of the obverse is similar to that of Trajan’s Syrian tetradrachms, and this coin may have been struck at the same Syrian mint. The denomination is ambiguous (denarius or drachm?) since the obverse legend is in Latin and the reverse legend is in Greek.
43. Hadrian. AD 117-138. AR Denarius (17mm, 3.46 g, 6h). Antioch (or Tyre?) mint. Struck August–December AD 117. RIC II.3 2959; RPC p. 449; RSC 4d; McAlee p. 217, fig. 22 (this coin illustrated). Toned. EF. Very rare. An exquisite example of the first eastern issue of Hadrian. ($500) McAlee suggests that the earliest eastern issues of Hadrian in fact originate in Tyre, based on this coin’s close similarity to the eagle-on-club tetradrachms that he also attributes there.

Unpublished Late Eastern Issue
186. Caracalla. AD 198-217. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.96 g, 12h). Uncertain Syrian(?) mint. Struck circa AD 215. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, laureate head right / P M TR P XVIII COS III P P, Fides standing left, holding two signa. Unpublished in the standard references, but for another late eastern denarius with a FIDES MILITVM reverse, see: McAlee p. 266, fig. 24 = Aufhauser 10 (5 October 1996), lot 46; Steinberg Collection (Numismatica Ars Classica/Spink, 16 November 1994), lot 614. Porosity. VF. ($200) Purchased from Romae Aeternae Numismatics. McAlee hypothesizes that this coin is part of a small wartime issue of denarii, know from the two examples cited above, and related to the tetradrachm issues given by Prieur to Antioch (cf. Prieur 229-245). In any case, its distinctive eastern-style portrait and low-grade silver flan are strongly reminiscent of Caracalla’s Syrian tetradrachms, suggesting a hitherto unknown official issue.

B
193a Elagabalus. AD 218-222. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.81 g, 11h). Antioch mint. Struck AD 218-219. ANTONINVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate head right / CON COR DIA, two signa between two aquilae; MILIT in exergue. RIC IV 187; Thirion 345; BMCRE 276; RSC 15a; McAlee Supp. 1, p. 10, fig. 27A, B (this coin illustrated). Delicate gray and gold toning. Near EF. Though generally attributed to Antioch mint in the trade, the eastern denarii of Elagabalus undoubtedly originated elsewhere, as argued by Butcher (p. 68). A majority of these issues feature styles more akin to the provincial mints of the Balkans than of Syria. The denarii in this and the following lot, however, are very clearly related to the bronze issues of Antioch. Further study is needed to address this issue, but for now it would appear that at least some of the eastern denarii of Elagabalus should be re-attributed back to Antioch.

IMP CAES PESCE NIGER IVSTI AV, laureate head right / SAECVLI FELICIT/AS, seven stars over crescent. Hill 186. Superb EF. As a young man, Carl Wilhelm Becker was sent to train as a wine merchant, despite his desire to pursue a career in the arts. Becker’s wine business failed by 1803, and he subsequently undertook training as an engraver at the Munich mint. It appears Becker was producing copies of ancient coins by at least 1806, and he would go on to produce some 350 dies of classical and medieval coins, both common and rare. It was disputed then as now whether his intent was to defraud. While it is true he would offer coins to collectors and museums as study pieces, they would also frequently turn up in the trays of antiquarian dealers as genuine. Following Becker’s death in 1830, his dies were transferred to the Berlin Museum, which used them to strike off-metal copies that were made available to museums, dealers, and collectors.
