The Syrian city of Emesa was the center for the worship of the eastern sun god Elagabal, and the home of the family of Julia Domna. The name and cult were adopted by her grand-nephew, M. Aurelius Antoninus, known as Elagabalus. The arrival ofthe cult object, possibly a meteoric stone, was the cause of delirious celebration at Rome among hisfellow worshippers, much to the horror of the staid populace. Such excesses eventually lead to the assassination of Elagabalus and his replacement by Severus Alexander.

Reduced Photo 732. Lot of sixteen "Billie and Charlies". Circa 1860. Billie Monk and Charlie Eaton were two of the more industrious "mudlarks" or scavengers along the Thames river in the mid-19th century. Amazed by the prices paid by museums and collectors for the medieval artifacts that turned up, the pair decided to improve on the original by producing their own. Being completely illiterate, they simply copied as best they knew how pieces seen in the museums, embellished with nonsense legends, dates and fanciful depictions of medieval life taken from popular magazines. After about four years the experts finally caught on, and insisted that Billie and Charlie stick to finding the real thing. This lot shows examples of their lead and brass tokens, pilgrim badges and reliquaries (or perhaps castanets). Interesting Victoriana. 16 pieces. (£400)
