The Mildenhall Collection of English Milled Silver Coins The Mildenhall Collection was formed over nearly seventy years by a gentleman from Suffolk, England who has had a distinguished career in public service. The first acquisitions were made when the collector was a boy in the 1950s. Having focussed on other numismatic series - forming and disposing of two important collections - he started collecting English coins again in earnest in the early 1990s. The intention was to form a representative collection of types and, from the later Nineteenth Century onwards, dates of all denominations that were struck for circulation. As the following catalog demonstrates our collector had a very keen eye for quality. The 1990s was a fortuitous time to be forming a cabinet of English coins there was a surfeit of high grade material on the market. As the frequency of his purchases reveal, the collector relished the pursuit and he benefited immensely from a very good relationship with the leading London dealers of the day. An unusually high proportion of the coins in the collection have mesmerising toning indicative that they have been carefully treasured by collectors of past generations. Many coins have provenances from the sales of famous collections such as Manville, Lord Hamilton of Dalzell, Lingford, Paget and Bridgewater House. Commencing with the iconic Cromwell Crown of 1658 and concluding with the last coins of Elizabeth II struck prior to decimalisation of the currency in 1970 the collection gracefully spans three hundred years. It is replete with the classic types of the early milled series including the desirable provenance mark coins such as the elephant and the plume variety Shillings of Charles II, the provincial mints of William III, the celebrated VIGO coinage of Queen Anne, the South Sea Company issues of George I and the popular LIMA types of George II. Following the great reform of the coinage with the introduction of steam power in 1816 the work of the talented engravers Benedetto Pistrucci and William Wyon is evinced in a series of coins in superb states of preservation. The later issues of Queen Victoria from the Golden Jubilee coinage of 1887 through to the end of the reign in 1901 are complete by denomination and date. The reigns of George V, George VI and Elizabeth II, prior to decimalisation, are likewise essentially complete by denomination and date and are uniformly in very high grade. This is a remarkable achievement. All coins in the collection have been graded by NGC with the exception of the multiple lots 245 and 246. Our assessment of the traditional English descriptive grades are available on request. References consulted: Bull M. Bull. English Silver Coinage. London, 2015 ESC A. Rayner. English Silver Coinage.
