Fifteen years ago, Michaela Moore and Amy and Steve Colley were asked to create an artsbased camp for special-needs children. Little did they know that their idea would become a summertime staple at the Waverly Community House, 1115 N. Abington Road. “Camp Create offers a unique blend of art and theater instruction with consideration for individual needs and interests,” Moore said. “It is a mix of fun and learning, focusing on what the campers can do. Each camper’s experience is catered to his or her personal needs, abilities and interest. The camp culminates in a presentation of the campers’ art work, as well as an individual play that the campers create and perform themselves.” Moore explained that each Camp Create participant gets to create a character based on the themes for each weekly session. This week’s session is “Hidden Treasure.” Registration is still open for the July 27-31 session, “League of Heroes.” “We take the campers’ characters and then build an original play with them,” Moore said. “This makes it possible to cater each child’s journey through the camp to their unique interest and abilities. They also learn team building, cooperation and self-expression in a group dynamic as they work as an ensemble to create the play they present at the end of the session. They get the best of both worlds — an individualized journey while working in a group.” For the participants, the best part of the camp, Moore says, is that they get to create something different every time. Students have returned year after year for the experience which, she added, helps them develop other

skills besides creative ones. “The kids feel it is a safe place to explore and express themselves,” she said. “Most of our students come back every year. This is our 15th year and we now have some former campers coming to intern with us and help with the next generation of campers. We want the participants to have an awesome summer and we plan to keep the camp going for another 15 years.” Camp Create is co-sponsored by the Abing-

ton Heights Civic League, Gerrity’s Supermarkets, Fibers of the Earth, POSH and Proctor and Gamble. The “League of Heroes” session will run weekdays from July 27-31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and tuition is $40 per child. Camp Create is suitable to children with special needs from ages 6-12, or equivalent abilities and space is limited to 15 children per week. For more information or to register, call 570-233-3622 or 570-586-8099 and ask for Michaela Moore.
