Sometimes the calendar plays funny tricks. A good example is coming up. On Sunday, the Super Bowl arrives, and then on Tuesday is Shrove (or Fat) Tuesday, before Lent arrives on Wednesday. So it’s a time for parties and festive fare. • It starts with the Blakely/Peckville Crime Watch’s pre-Lent Mardi Gras celebration Friday, Feb. 5, 6-10 p.m. at Fiorelli’s catering, 1501 Main St. in Peckville, featuring food and entertainment. “This is our fourth year and it has proven to be very successful,” said Blakely Borough Mayor Jeanette Mariani, who founded the organization. “The group does not look for big profits but rather a fun-filled informal New Orleans-style Mardi Gras evening for everyone to get together and enjoy themselves while at the same time supporting our group. Nothing is cut short! Good food — New Orleans and Italian — good desserts, good jazz music and also a deejay for dancing.” Some attendees wear masks, beads and dress in Mardi Gras colors, but it’s not required. Mariani reports that previously more than $9,000 was donated to purchase nine tablets for Blakely Borough police cars. For more info and to purchase tickets, call the mayor at 570-383-9946. • Jessup Hose Co. No. 1, 632 Fourth Ave., will hold its Super Bowl porketta sandwich sale Saturday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $10 for four sandwiches. Tickets are available from any member. • The Visitation of the BVM Church will hold its annual Mardi Gras wine tasting Saturday, Feb. 6, 5-8 p.m. in the Parish Center at LaSalle Academy Primary Campus, 625 Dundaff Street, Dickson City. A large variety of wines will be offered by local vintners along with homemade food and desserts. Advance tickets are $15 ($20 at the door). Designated drivers $10 at the door. Tickets are available at the parish office, 1090 Carmalt Street, Dickson City. For more information, call 570-489-2091.
