Lakeland High School presents ‘Annie’ by Christopher Cornell ADVANTAGE EDITOR
It may be cloudy outside the Lakeland High School auditorium, but inside, next weekend, the sun’ll come out. Lakeland will present its production of Annie Thursday through Saturday, March 3-5. “It’s coming together well and we are so excited to perform,” said junior Miyah Pliska. The show is based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip “Little Orphan Annie.” The original Broadway production opened in 1977 and ran for nearly six years, setting a record for its theatre, and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical’s songs “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life” are among its most popular musical numbers. The story follows the adventures of young Annie, an orphan in New York City during the Great Depression. Annie still has hope of leaving the orphanage where she lives, which is run by the evil Miss Hannigan. After she is chosen to spend Christmas at the mansion of millionaire Daddy Warbucks, he decides to adopt her, announcing that he is offering $50,000 to anyone who can prove they are Annie’s parents. This gives Hannigan and her con-man brother Rooster, an idea for an evil plan... According to Catherine Carter, the production’s artistic director, Annie was selected after giving the students a say in what show they would like to do. Initially, Carter and music director Bryan Brophy had a different show in mind, but it “was not immediately received positively by the older students, so we went back to the drawing board to look at other possibilities.” After researching several shows, Annie was the one on which everyone could agree.

Carter said there are several challenges to staging this show. “With so many students involved this year, finding the right period costumes for a limited amount of money was challenging,” she said. “We are renting as well as borrowing costumes, finding some in our own closets at home, and even having some costumes made specifically for the show.” Another chalFrom left, front row: Miyah Pliska, Adrianna Vilgos, Lexie Wheeler, Emily lenge — one that plagues many high Keen and Casey Smith.
