Three Jermyn residents to be honored

by Christopher Cornell ADVANTAGE EDITOR

Everybody knows somebody like them: the person who sticks around to clean up, who always has a fresh idea, who inspires others to pitch in and make a difference, without expecting any sort of reward. In Jermyn, every year, the Jermyn Events Committee picks a few of those sorts of people and gives them the recognition they deserve at the annual Awards Dinner. This year the dinner will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, at St. Michael’s Hall, 403 Delaware Ave. Festivities begin with a 5 p.m. social hour, a family-style dinner follows at 6 p.m., followed by the program. Tickets are $30 and are available by calling 570876-1477 or from any member of the committee. This year the honorees are: Trish Pearsall, who was named Volunteer of the Year, Carol Morcom, who will get a Lifetime Achievement award, and Ann Boylan, who will be honored for community service. In addition Walter Estile, James Allan, Jeffrey McDermott and Catherine “Katie” Hosie will receive Community Service awards from Jermyn Borough Council. Trish Pearsall is employed at Figliomeni’s Pharmacy Care in Carbondale. She is married to Rich Pearsall and they have two children. Almost immediately after moving to Jermyn 20 years ago, she began volunteering and assisting various organizations and church activities. Then it was scouting, then Little League. Pearsall learned about grants and purchasing and helped bring in much-needed funds. She still remembers her first grant for $40,000, used to modernize the playground equipment. Pearsall found other ways to bring in much needed funds. She chaired three craft fairs and two flea markets, she came up with the idea of renting the gym and stage for birthday parties and adult leagues. Carol Morcom is very proud of her 73 years of

living and serving the town of Jermyn. She has been married to Keith Morcom for 49 years and they have two children and two granddaughters, Morcom was auxiliary president at the Crystal Hose Co. for many years and has more than 30 years serving with the Girl Scouts. At the First United Methodist Church, she was in the church choir, served as Sunday school and Bible summer school teacher. She also helps at all fundraisers, serving as door sales chair, and, she says with a chuckle, “I am the official welsh cookie bow maker, making them secure and pretty.” Ann Boylan is a life-long Jermyn resident. She Trish Pearsall - Jermyn Volunteer of the Year Award is a sales manager and longtime employee with the Solomon Casket Co. Ann is the daughter of the late John and Anna (Blondie) Dombroski Mosley. Ann was married to the late Thomas Boylan and they had three children and four grandchildren. In 2004 when the town of Jermyn was dark for the Christmas season, she decided she was going to become involved. The Christmas Light Committee was formed and she is a charter member. The committee is still active and updating the Christmas lights; this year changing to LED lights and refurbishing the Carol Morcom - Lifetime Achievement Award wreaths. Ann is a member of the Jermyn Community Chorus, a member of the Jermyn Shade Tree Commission, serves her church as an Extraordinary Minister and lector and served on committees for fundraising and decorating. In 2007-08, Ann assisted with setting up for the Red Cross Blood Mobile, which was part of the Events Committee Health Fair. As a member of the Jermyn Events Committee and her love of flowers, she was appointed Flower Beautification chairwoman. “People notice things in town, good or bad. I would like Jermyn to be a pleasant place to be in.” Ann Boylan - Community Service Award
