Filmmakers from around the world are preparing to attend the first Belin Film Festival from the F. Lammot Belin Arts Foundation at the Waverly Community House. The festival will take place Friday through Sunday, Oct. 14-16, featuring public screenings of submissions as well as panel discussions and workshops on filmmaking. FLBA Foundation coordinator Alexandra MacNamara said the organization seeks to enrich the community. “The Waverly Community House is expanding and redefining the scope of the F. Lammot Belin Memorial Fund to serve as the F. Lammot Belin Arts Foundation, she said. “The primary objective of the foundation is to build community through the arts.” The film festival seemed like a good fit, according to MacNamara. “I knew right away that I wanted to do something with film because it is an artistic medium that is accessible and relatable to everyone,” she said. “It was during a conversation with Jason Sherry, who is a film director and teacher at Wyoming Seminary, that I started to think about producing a festival. I proposed the idea to him and asked him if he would work with me to pull this event together.” With some brainstorming, MacNamara and Sherry began to flesh out the concept for the festival — but additional help from the arts community brought things together over a year of planning. “His support and validation opened up a world of support from local filmmakers, screenwriters, editors, critics, film enthusiasts and more,” said MacNamara. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with so many incredible individuals on this project. Creating something of this scale from scratch has taken a tremendous effort from a committee that is as talented as it is tireless, but I’ve been met with nothing but consistent positivity and encouragement. I have yet to come across someone who isn’t willing to get involved and make this festival something that

can immensely benefit the region.” Festival organizers sent a call for interested filmmakers to sign up for the Belin Film Festival by June 1, and 30 films from around the world were submitted. Twelve teams also will participate in the Belin Film Festival Challenge, in which teams have two months to create a seven-minute film. Teams were provided with a character, prop and line of dialogue and may choose a genre. The three-day festival will have a busy schedule, according to MacNamara. “Opening night will be hosted at the Waverly Community House with cinema-themed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres provided by Harvest Catering,” she said. “Tickets are available, but limited. On Saturday and Sunday,
there will be screenings at the People’s Security Bank Theater at Lackawanna College and the Dietrich Theater, in addition to workshops being held at the Waverly Community House on Saturday.” Categories for submitted films include narrative short form, narrative long form, documentary, Lackawanna underground (short films focused on Lackawanna County), foreign short film, Lackawanna/Luzerne spotlight (filmmakers born or currently living in either county), social media (very short videos from services like Vine) and female directors/ screenwriters.
