Group seeks to preserve memories of Old Forge Borough
by Stephanie Longo CNG EDITOR
When Old Forge resident Pat Stassi stopped in at an estate sale a few years ago to look at an old car, he had no idea he’d find a treasure of another kind. “I saw a box of files there and saw the name of the Stewart family, which was a prominent family here in Old Forge,” he recalled. “I waited so I could bid on it. When I went through it, I couldn’t believe what was in there.” Stassi discussed his finds with friend and fellow Old Forge resident Sal Luzio Sr. and the two realized that there could be other pieces to the puzzle of Old Forge Borough history out there that, as Stassi said, could end up “property of the landfill” if something wasn’t done. The group’s first meeting will be held on Thursday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Old Forge Borough Building, 310 S. Main St. “There are people out there who know things,” Luzio said. “We found out how drastically Main Street has changed over the years; for example, where the Burger King is now was once the Butler Silk Mill. We know there are families out there who are survivors of the people who originally took these pictures or who have documents that were handed down to them. We want to save those pictures and documents for future generations.” Luzio invites borough residents who might have old photos or documents for the society to come to the meeting. If someone does not wish to part with an item, they will scan and return everything to the owners. “We want anyone who has an interest in Old Forge’s history to be involved with our

The group eventually hopes to create a visigroup,” Stassi said. “Our goal is to do research and go back as early as possible in our borough’s tors’ center and museum. For more information history.
