It’s a chance to celebrate the summer while meeting new neighbors. The Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., Clarks Summit, will host a Native American pow wow on Wednesday, July 15, from 4-7 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the Abington Heights Civic League, The Belize Fund and The Portal Institute, which will relocate to the Abingtons from Susquehanna County later this year. Library director Leah Ducato Rudolph explained that the event ties into the library’s summer reading theme of “heroes,” as the Native American tribes can be considered America’s original superheroes. “The Portal Institute contacted us last year about collaborating on something this summer and we thought it would be a great idea to host a pow wow here,” she said. “Native Americans will celebrate with song and dance for the duration of the event, with other activities to fill in.” In Native American culture, a pow wow is a gathering of tribes to meet and dance, sing, socialize and honor their cultures. In a nod to that tradition, the event will include an authentic teepee set up on the grounds of the library, as well as displays of Native American artifacts and art, and other activities based on the theme. Edwin Printup, the illustrator of “Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message” will also be present with copies of his book. But, Rudolph says, the highlight of the night will include a special performance. “The Red Storm Drum and Dance Troupe will perform a traditional Native American dance,” she said.”The troupe’s members are from many different Native American heritages and ages. There will be the drummers, dancers, flute players, storytellers and educators that evening.” The Red Storm Drum and Dance Troupe hails from New York State and has performed for various colleges and universities through-

out the United States. The troupe itself is a Native American educational and community outreach group whose members form a patchwork of the nation’s diverse tribes. “Through their music, songs, dances and stories, the troupe hopes to open the eyes, minds and hearts of all that are present to the beauty of their culture and they invite their audience to join in dance or play a part in their stories,” Rudolph said. “This allows the public, young and old, to feel as though they are a part of a culture which once was and still is a part of this beautiful land.” “The Abington Community Library prides
itself on providing civic and social opportunities,” Rudolph continued. “We are the only library with a dedicated foreign fiction collection for all ages. It was time we did something for our Native Americans.” The pow wow will also feature the Mannings Mobile ice cream truck and parking will be available at surrounding businesses, including Fidelity Bank, the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church and PennDOT.
