A new season of pro wrestling has begun in Moosic by Tucker Hottes
SPECIAL TO THE TRIBORO BANNER
The mats are shaking once again in Moosic as Grand Slam Wrestling kicks off the 2016 season. Saturday, Feb. 6, saw the “Hostile Intentions” match host a packed crowd at the Moosic Youth Center. GSW ProWrestling co-owner Brad Czankner said the event was a major start to the organization’s season. “This weekend was a huge success for Grand Slam Wrestling; we packed over 130 into the Moosic Youth Center for our first show of 2016,” he said. In spite of a cancellation of a January event that was to start the season, Czankner said fans were ready to come up in support of the wrestlers for an evening of family friendly entertainment. “It seems that the missed show in January didn’t stop our fans from coming out and enjoying a great night of professional wrestling,” he said. “We were excited to see many new faces in our crowd and to once again run out of chairs for fans. It looks like we’re going to have to start renting extra chairs now. We are looking to make 2016 the biggest year in GSW history, whether it’s by being the promotion that showcases the best wrestling and wrestlers in this area, or maybe by bringing in wrestlers you never thought you’d see in a GSW ring.” The GSW roster features wrestlers who have become local favorites and have expanded their fanbase throughout the region. Like big-name national wrestling, though, matches can often lead to twists and turns that keep fans on their toes. “We saw a lot of action on Saturday night,” said Czankner. “Best friends battled to become the number one contender for the GSW title, as Kevin ‘The Man’ Graham and Brute VanSlyke tore each other apart only to have Graham cheat to earn the top honor.” GSW’s title match wasn’t the only shakeup during the evening. “We also had two other title matches that ended up with controversy,” said Czankner.

The action was furious at last week’s season opener.
“Wild Phoenix defeated Mark Hartt by disqualification when Mark’s manager hit Phoenix with the Adrenaline Title. The two men then proceeded to rip the mask off of Phoenix. In our tag-team title match, the Cash Masters retained their titles, which enraged their opponents, The Falcon Corps, who then violently attacked GSW Commissioner Phil Stamper and gave him a spike piledriver.” Antics in the ring can lead to serious consequences, however, and not all challengers are allowed to get away with illegal shenanigans, said Czankner – Commissioner Stamper ordered an indefinite suspension of The Falcon Corps. Other GSW mainstays made appearances, including long-standing rivalries and heavyweight title bouts. “Matt Turner and Mike Vaughn contin-

ued their best of five series with a ‘Last Man Standing’ match, which saw Vaughn even up the score 2-2, which sets up the fifth and final match next month,” said Czankner. “Our main event saw ‘Cinema’ Stevie Shields retain his GSW Heavyweight title in a hard fought, harder hitting match with Bo Nekoda.” Wrestling fans continue to look to GSW Pro Wrestling as an inexpensive, exciting source of entertainment. The next taste of the action will be March 12 at the Moosic Youth Center, which will feature the final Turner vs. Vaughn series matchup in ‘Fight Without Honor.’ Also on the horizon is the annual Agro Cup, which culminates in a four-man ladder match for one of GSW’s highest honors.
