That’s the message of ‘The Invisible Dragon’ by Christopher Cornell
ADVANTAGE EDITOR
Once upon a time, there was a gloomy prince. So begins this year’s children’s theater production from Marywood University’s Music, Theatre and Dance Department, “The Invisible Dragon.” Kids in area schools (including a busload from Carbondale Area Elementary) will be bused down for special midweek performances, and a performance open to the general public will be presented Saturday, April 18, at 11 a,m, on the Main Stage of the Sette La Verghetta Center for Performing Arts on the Marywood campus. Admission is $4 for all ages and may be purchased at the door. This will be the 51st year that Marywood has presented a children’s theater production and, unlike last year’s special 50th anniversary production, when local school districts, including Valley View, hosted performances, “we’re going back to the regular way we do it, and the performance will be here on campus,” explained Dr. Paulette Merchel, theatre program director. Merchel has a long history with children’s theater at Marywood. “When I was a student here, I took part in the production. I have pretty much have lived it.” The focus of the play is that gloomy prince, who is unhappy because he never bothers to do things for others and make them happy. “It tells the story of what happens when he meets a dragon-slaying princess, who’s on the trail of an invisible dragon,” she said. “If there’s one message of the play, it’s ‘happiness is in doing things for others’.” The play includes a lot of interaction between the stage and the audience. For example, at one point the kids will be asked to sing a song that will help the characters. “Packets

have been sent to the teachers of the kids who will be bused to the show,” Merchel said. “And it includes a recording of one of the songs in the show, So they’ll know the song when they come, and be ready to join in.” The kids will also have been asked to name their favorite vegetable, draw a picture of it, and wear it to the show. During the course of the play, when the characters are trying to capture the illusive dragon, “they’ll discpver that the things that will make the dragon stick around is vegetables,” she explained. The show is only 50 minutes long (bus schedules, and the length of time before little kids start to get antsy, dictate that length) so rehearsal times have not been as extensive as a a full three-act play might demand. “It’s only been about four weeks, but every second is precious because our director/cho-

reographer, Maura Malloy, lives in Manhattan and can only spend so much time here,” Merchel noted. “Also, it’s near the end of the semester and our students have a lot pressure as exams approach.” Merchel said one of the things the cast has to learn is how to perform for roomful of young children. “It’s an entirely different kind of acting,” she said. “You have to be completely honest. Kids pick up on anything that’s phoney, and they call you on it. If you’re supposed to be hiding, and it doesn’t look like you’re hiding, the kids are going to squeal on you.” Merchel is already beginning to plan ahead for next year’s show. “I’ve already settled on the performance dates for next year. Because even though we do this every year, it’s something so dear to us we don’t want to lose it.”
