Fundraising is so crucial to a volunteer fire company’s sustainability. So, any helping hand is always welcomed with open arms. Such was the case when members of the Riverside school district’s junior high boys and girls cross country teams donated a grand total of 1,200 cupcakes to separate fundraisers conducted by Taylor Fire Department No. 1 and Greenwood Fire Department. Each fire company received 600 individually wrapped cupcakes. The Taylor volunteer firemen sold the cupcakes at a recent chicken barbecue fundraiser. According to fire company captain John Tigue, the donation ended up saving the fire company from having to spend $200 to $300 on cake for the fundraiser. Tigue profusely thanked Riverside cross country coach Mike Zuby for instilling a sense of civic engagement in his runners. “It really made life easy for the firefighters,” said Tigue, whose son, Justin, is a member of the cross country team.
