Since that time more than 7,000 dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, ferrets and more have found their forever-homes with AWSOM’s help.

The AWSOM Animal Shelter is located on Godfrey Ridge Drive in Stroudsburg.

The Animal Welfare Society of Monroe (AWSOM) has been selected as the statewide recipient of MuttNation Foundation’s Mutts Across America grant program.

Mutts Across America is an annual program providing funds and support to animal shelters in every US state. Fifty shelter beneficiaries were selected this year, one representing each of the 50 states.

MuttNation Foundation is a donationsupported organization with the mission to end animal cruelty, neglect and homelessness. It was founded in 2007 by country superstar Miranda Lambert and her mother, Bev Lambert.

AWSOM formed as a grassroots, volunteer organization in March 2009, in answer to the sudden closing Monroe County’s only

Pocono Pistol Makes Cancer Donation

During their second year fundraising for the Hope for Strength Breast Cancer Fund, the Pocono Pistol Club raised $1,000. This was accomplished through the support of members, customers and staff, donating a portion of proceeds from Ladies’ Night, and general donations.

Pocono Lake dental office moves

Recently Lifetime Dental of Pocono Lake relocated to Stroudsburg, changing its name to Lifetime Dental of Stroudsburg West. The new location is at 106 Skinner Hill Road in Stroudsburg.

The long-time Pocono Lake dental practice was originally James A. Rinehimer, DDS and Dr. Rinehimer acknowledged mixed emotions about making the move.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my years practicing dentistry in Pocono Lake and so part of me was disappointed to relocate, but at the same time I’m really happy about what our new location provides,” he said. “The new location is more comfortable and more spacious, which I think our patients

appreciate. The tight working spaces in our former office worked well for a long time, but we grew and we reached the point where we needed a change and we’re delighted to say we found a great space.”

While there is a new name and a new location, the phone number for Lifetime Dental of Stroudsburg West remains the same as the Pocono Lake office, 570-6469444.

“Patients see the same faces, we’re just in a different location,” said Rinehimer. “I think our patients like the new office and our team is really beginning to make the space our own.”

Residents with household incomes of less than $54,000 in 2015 can receive free assistance completing their federal, state and local tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The free service is staffed by University of Scranton accounting students and numerous professional volunteers organized by the University and the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties with the support of several local human service organizations.

The VITA service is available by appointment through March. Appointments can be made online at uwlc.net or by calling 570-504-0614.

Walk-in service without an appointment is also available in Brennan Hall on the University’s campus through March 16; and from March 29 to April 1, Mondays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Tuesdays noon to 5 p.m.; Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Residents using the VITA service are asked to bring the following items: a valid photo ID; all W2 Forms; all 1099 forms (interest, dividends, pensions); real estate tax receipts for rent/tax rebate; Form 8332 for non-custodial parents; Social Security numbers or Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITIN) for all taxpayers and dependents; W-7 forms if appropriate; information related to income and expenses (business, rental properties, sale of stocks); a personal banking account check if direct deposit is desired; and any documentation related to health insurance for themselves and anyone on the tax return in 2015. Last year’s tax returns are also requested.

GARLIC-ZUCCHINI SOUP 1 medium onion, chopped 2 tablespoons butter, melted 6 cups thinly sliced zucchini (about 2 pounds) 4 cups chicken broth 4 cloves garlic, crushed 1½ teaspoons red wine vinegar ¼ teaspoons black pepper 2 medium-sized red potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 1 (8-ounce) carton sour cream 3 tablespoons chopped green onions Sauté onion in butter in a Dutch oven or large pot over medium heat until onion is tender. Add zucchini and next 4 ingredients; bring to a boil. Add potatoes; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes, or until potato is tender.

Position knife blade in food processor bowl; add half the zucchini mixture and process 30 seconds or until smooth. Repeat procedure with remaining half of zucchini mixture. Serve soup warm, or cover and chill.

To serve, ladle soup into individual soup bowls. Top each serving with sour cream and sprinkle evenly with chopped green onions.

Yield: 9 cups.

To make spinach filling: In a large bowl, blend 1 cup finely chopped cooked spinach, 1 cup Ricotta cheese (drained), ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, 2 tablespoons bread crumbs, 1 egg (beaten), 1 teaspoon salt and dash of pepper. Place 1 tablespoon of the filling in each square. Follow boiling instructions above.

Q: I’m reading about the Zika virus and feel nervous.

As our community hospital, what is your best advice?

A: Dr. Susheer Gandotra You raise an important question. Many people are concerned about the Zika virus and what it means for them.

As you probably know, the Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites, specifically the Aedes species of mosquitoes, which are found in tropical and sub-tropical regions throughout the world. Zika virus was first identified in humans in 1952 in Africa. In May of 2015, Brazil experienced a large outbreak of the Zika virus, and since then the virus has been spreading fairly rapidly throughout South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. To date, however, there have been no known local mosquito-borne cases in the Poconos. However, doctors have diagnosed travel-associated cases of the virus in the U.S. and Pennsylvania, and there is evidence that the Zika Virus could be sexually transmitted.

It is estimated that one in five people infected with the Zika virus will develop symptoms, including fever, body rash, conjunctivitis (red eyes), muscle aches, and joint pain. These symptoms can last from several days to a week. If you develop any of these symptoms within two weeks of traveling to one of the areas where the virus is occurring, call your doctor right away. Currently, there is no antiviral treatment or vaccine available, but the symptoms are usually mild and go away on their own.

While it is likely that the Zika virus will continue to spread to new locations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said that it cannot predict how much it will spread in the U.S. Last year, 12 U.S. travelers tested positive for the virus, and that number is expected to increase in 2016.

Currently the CDC recommends that pregnant women and women of childbearing age planning to become pregnant should consider not traveling to Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and other countries and territories experiencing outbreaks. The CDC has found a link between the Zika virus in pregnant women and a birth defect in infants known as microcephaly. This condition develops during or after pregnancy, and can cause a smaller than expected head and/or brain in the child. The CDC reports that there have been more than 3,500 microcephaly cases reported in Brazil from October 2015 to January 2016.

Most importantly, if you have to travel to areas where the Zika virus transmission is ongoing, be sure to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and protect yourself from infection. Wear protective clothing (long sleeves and pants), use an insect repellent and sleep in screened-in and air-conditioned rooms. For the most up-to-date information on countries experiencing the spread of Zika Virus, visit www.CDC.gov.

On a global scale, the effort to better understand, educate, and lessen the spread of the virus is being taken very seriously. For instance, the World Health Organization (WHO) is prioritizing research into the Zika virus by bringing together experts from around the world and providing training on the management and diagnosis of the virus. WHO is also working to strengthen the capacity of laboratories to detect the virus, and is implementing strategies aimed at reducing Aedes mosquito populations, such as treating standing water sites to kill mosquito larvae.

Local Teacher in Top Ten to Receive International Award

The Varkey Foundation has named the ten finalists for the second annual $1 million Global Teacher Prize. Michael Soskil from Wallenpaupack South Elementary School, is among the finalists for the world’s largest teaching prize.

The top ten were selected from 8,000 applications representing 148 countries.

The winner will be announced March 13.

Soskil (USA) has created a global classroom that uses technology to connect his students to international projects.

His students have interacted with over 70 countries and the International Space Station. Soskil’s students have achieved real-world success by raising more than $12,000 for water filters for Nairobi’s Kibera slum. They have traded math lessons for Swahili lessons with students in Kenya. Michael’s school has exceeded state averages in tests, despite poverty in the area. He is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, NGO advisor and has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.

‘The Fantasticks’ at ESU Music and romance will take the stage at East Stroudsburg University as the theatre department presents the American musical classic, “The Fantasticks,” Feb. 24-28.

“This show is a valentine, blending comedy and romance with a lyrical score to produce an enchanting theatrical experience,” said Margaret J. Ball, D.M.A., associate professor of theatre and the production’s director.

With book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, the musical features two parents who try to trick their children into falling in love, but create a cascade of unanticipated consequences.

“The musical is a mash up, paying homage to many popular forms of theatre and entertainment,” Dr. Ball said.

“The show combines elements from the ancient myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ Commedia d’ell arte, Opera Comique, ‘Beat’ poetry, Latin dance music of the 1950s and, even Zorro.”

“The Fantasticks was conceived for a small space,” Dr. Ball said., “So, for the first time, the theatre department is presenting a musical in the Dale Snow Black Box Theatre. The production is totally acoustical, using the original orchestration of piano and harp.

“Due to the small cast size, the musical has been double cast so that more of our students will benefit from the performing and educational experience,” Dr. Ball said..

The set and costume designer is Yoshinori Tanokura,associate professor of theatre. Guest artist Bruce Abbot designed the lighting and Associate Professor Betsy Buzzelli-Clarke, Ed.D, is musical director.

Curtain times for the production are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Feb. 24-26, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28.

All performances are in the Dale Snow Theatre of the university’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, Normal and Marguerite streets, East Stroudsburg. Advance ticket purchase is recommended because of the intimate size of the theatre.

Tickets are $12; $10 for senior citizens, faculty and staff with ID, $7 for students with ID and $5 for youth. This play is recommended for ages 10 and above.

Backyard Beekeeping is a yearlong program appropriate for honeybee enthusiasts and was designed to support new and seasoned beekeepers through an entire apiary year. This workshop will focus on Springtime Beekeeping, what to do, and what to expect. Topics will include what to look for as your new colonies become established, proactive support of your over-wintered hives, an overview of splits and their creation, why and how honeybees swarm, taking the lead on swarm management, and a review of the apiary calendar.

Praised for preservation The Monroe County Historical Association has announced the winners of the 2016 P.E.P (Preserve Enhance Promote) Awards. Owners of historic buildings who have shown their dedication to preserving, enhancing and promoting Monroe County’s historic structures will be honored at the MCHA annual meeting and awards luncheon Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, Shawnee-on-Delaware.

Three categories of buildings were judged. In the Commercial Property category, Wallace Block of the Borough of Stroudsburg (upper left) was the winner. In the Non-Profit/Publically-Funded category, the Stroudsburg Post Office (upper right) was the winner. And in the Residential Property category, “The Whitman Home,” owned by William and Deborah Whitman in Hamilton Township (lower left) was the winner. The Heritage Resource Award will be given to Quiet Valley Living Historical

Farm of Hamilton Township, in recognition of their efforts to preserve the resources of the small farm and to provide a historical experience and educational opportunities for the visiting public.

“Our organization is pleased to recognize the owners of these historic properties,” said Monroe County Historical Association executive director Amy Leiser, “and we appreciate their dedication in helping us maintain the historic fabric of our community.”

This is the 11th year association has acknowledged owners of historic properties.

“We are always looking for additional structures to highlight and we welcome suggestions of other Monroe County sites that deserve recognition,” she added.

APRIL 21 Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, 347 Quiet Valley Road in Stroudsburg, will present “19th Century Days - A Day in the Life,” a new hands-on educational programdesigned to provide students ages 6-18 with the opportunity to explore the lifestyle of a 19th century homestead. It will be presented Thursday, April 21, and Friday, April 22. The day features two workshop slots, 12:30-2 p.m. and 2:15-3:45 p.m. You may sign up for up to four different sessions. There are more than 25 different workshop offerings from small and large animal husbandry to simple machine to carding, spinning and weaving which are all designed to meet the new Pennsylvania STEAM-based educational curriculum guidelines.

Registrations will be taken by phone, in person or on-line until sessions are full. The price for all workshops is $5 per student for each session, which also covers all material fees.
