Northeast Title & Tag was voted the best notary service.

The category of best diner was won by Silver Spoon Diner. Best restaurant was won by Damon’s Grill. The award for best Italian restaurant was won by Dino & Francesco’s Pizza & Pasta House. Winning for best Asian restaurant was Kyoto.

The award for best breakfast restaurant was Sunrise Café. They were also voted best brunch restaurant. Ovarian cancer, cancer of the ovaries, which are part of a woman’s reproductive system, is a rare cancer. About 21,000 women are diagnosed annually in the United States.

Ovarian cancer does not yet have an effective screening test and only about 20 percent of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage. This fact has made ovarian cancer very frightening and you will hear it referred to as the “Silent Killer.”

When health-care providers talk about screening, they mean something very specific.

A screening is a medical test or series of tests used to find disease in individuals who have no symptoms. A diagnostic test is a procedure performed to confirm, or determine the presence of disease in an individual suspected of having the disease, usually following the report of symptoms, or based on the results of other medical tests. Some cancers, like breast, cervical and colon have screenings which can detect the cancers early, before they have symptoms and when they are treatable.

Recent studies, however, have shown that ovarian cancer is not totally silent in its early stages.

You may now hear of ovarian cancer called the “disease that whispers.” The symptoms of ovarian cancer can be vague and seem similar to more common ailments, but there are symptoms. The most common signs of ovarian cancer can include: bloating or a swollen abdomen; increased abdominal size; change in urination frequency, urgency or difficulty; feeling full quickly; constipation/ diarrhea; abdominal/back pain; pelvic pain/ pressure, painful intercourse; nausea; vaginal bleeding, change in menstruation and unexplained weight loss.

In order to know if these symptoms are

something to be concerned about, you should know what is normal and explainable for you.

If you had beer and wings last evening and are bloated today, that can be explained. But if the symptoms listed above have turned up without an apparent cause, are occurring frequently, for example every other day, and are more severe, bring them to the attention of your health-care provider. All women need to have an annual well GYN visit with a pelvic exam, even though another difficulty with ovarian cancer is that it can develop very quickly, even between visits to your OBGYN. Risk factors associated with ovarian cancer include obesity, early start of menstruation or late menopause and not having children. Currently the only identified cause of ovarian cancer is having the genetic mutations BRCA1 and BRCA2. Having a genetic mutation increases your risk for ovarian cancer but does not guarantee you will get the disease.

For decades the cancer community has been looking for an effective way to screen women for ovarian cancer. Current blood tests and vaginal ultrasounds may be used for high-risk women only. If you have any of the symptoms of ovarian cancer listed above, listen to your body and your intuition. Make an appointment with your health-care provider immediately. When symptoms persist and cannot be explained, that is a “red flag.”

The Waverly Community House, 1115 N. Abington Road in Waverly, will offer “Sign and Read: Baby Signing Time” classes. Designed to help hearing children communicate using sign language, the Sign and Read program is especially useful in developing communication skills with children. The program, for hearing babies, reduces tears, tantrums and frustration, makes learning to talk easier, boosts self-esteem and self-confidence.

The classes are part of the Beginning American Sign Language Instruction for parents wishing to use ASL to communicate with their hearing child. The classes are offered on Saturday mornings over a six-week period, with 45-minute sessions that will include topics such as mealtime, manners,

Keystone Opens Veterans Center

Each Veterans’ Day, Keystone College honors veterans and current members of the armed forces with a special luncheon on campus. That tradition will continue on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with the addition of an important event.

Keystone will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Elmer R. Hawk ’48 Center for Veterans at 11:30 a.m. Following the dedication, the 11th annual Veterans’ Day luncheon will take place in Evans Hall. The new center, located on the first floor of Alumni Hall in the center of campus, serves as a single point of contact for Keystone students who are military veterans or current members of the military. The center offers a meeting place for this special group of Keystone students. The new center is made possible by the Hawk family of Dunmore, in memory of the late Elmer R. Hawk, who was a business student at Keystone in 1947 and 1948 before joining his mother to help build Gertrude Hawk Chocolates. During World War II, as an airman, Hawk survived an 18-month ordeal at the infamous Stalag 17-B prisoner-ofwar camp in Austria.

Spiced Pumpkin-Potato Soup 1½ tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped 1½ teaspoons coriander 1½ teaspoons cumin Dash cayenne pepper 1 (29-ounce) can pumpkin (not pumpkin-pie mix) 1 (14½ ounce) can chicken broth 1 large potato, peeled, cubed (8-ounces) 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons sugar Dash coarsely ground black pepper Heat oil over medium heat in large soup pot until hot. Add onion; cook until tender and light brown, stirring occasionally. Add garlic, coriander, cumin and cayenne pepper; blend well. Mix in pumpkin, broth, potato, salt, sugar, pepper and 6 cups water. Bring up heat to boiling; reduce heat to simmer, cover and cook 15 to 20 minutes until potato is tender. Remove pot from heat and puree pumpkin mixture in pot with electric hand-blender until very smooth. Return blended soup to pot and reheat until hot. Serve with plain low-fat yogurt, if desired. Yield: 12 servings.

Hot Deviled Chicken 1 (3-pound) broiler-fryer chicken, quartered ½ stick butter or margarine, softened 1 tablespoon mustard 1 tablespoon vinegar ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon paprika Dash red pepper (more or less to taste) 1 cup fresh bread crumbs (2 slices bread) Dry chicken with paper towel. Combine butter or margarine, mustard, vinegar, salt, paprika, and red pepper; mix well. Rub mixture on skin of chicken. Place, skin side up, in a shallow roasting pan. Sprinkle evenly with crumbs. Bake at 350° for one hour until golden brown. Yield 4 servings.

Ham Casserole 2 medium potatoes, thinly sliced Salt and black pepper to taste 1 large onion, thinly sliced 1½ teaspoons thyme leaves, crushed

1 thick slice ham (1¾-pounds) trimmed 2 cups milk Place potatoes in lightly greased 2-quart casserole; sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Top with thinly sliced onion; sprinkle with crushed thyme. Place ham on onion and add milk. Cover and bake at 350° for 1 to 1½ hours until potatoes are tender. Yield: 6 servings.

Stuffed Tenderloin 1 (3-4 pound) beef tenderloin (with pocket cut in center for stuffing) 6 tablespoons butter or margarine ½ cup chopped yellow onion ½ cup chopped celery 1 cup chopped fresh mushrooms 3 cups herb seasoned stuffing mix 8 slices bacon ½ teaspoon bottled brown bouquet sauce 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce ¼ cup water 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms Sauté onion, celery and chopped mushrooms in butter. Preheat oven to 450°. Mix the above from step one with stuffing mix (crushed a little to make coarse breadcrumbs) and stuff entire mixture into the tenderloin pocket. Secure the stuffing in the pocket with skewers or toothpicks. Top the meat with bacon strips.

Place meat on baking rack and sear in a 450° preheated oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325° and roast for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Remove roast from oven and reserve all pan drippings.

In a saucepan, place the pan drippings and add brown bouquet sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and 1/4 cup water, stirring over low heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and heat thoroughly. Serve roast and stuffing warm with gravy on the side.

Yield: 8-10 servings.

Pasta and Chick-Pea Salad 8 ounces cooked fusilli pasta or other spiral pasta 1 (16-ounce) can chick-peas, drained 8 ounces mozzarella cheese, cut in ¾ inch cubes NOVEMBER 5, 2015 09:29 | CORNELLCHR

4 medium-size ripe tomatoes, cut in thin wedges 2 cups thinly sliced celery 1 cup small pearl onions 1 tablespoon dried basil leaves ½ teaspoon salt Black pepper to taste 1/3 cup red wine vinegar ¼ cup olive oil Layer fusilli pasta, chick-peas, cheese, then tomatoes in a salad bowl. Add celery, pearl onions, basil, salt, and pepper. Just before serving, drizzle with vinegar and oil; toss to mix. Yield: 4 servings.

Pumpkin Marshmallow Pudding 1½ cups skim milk 1 (3.4-ounce) package instant vanilla pudding and pie filling mix 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1 cup canned pumpkin ½ cup miniature marshmallows In a large bowl, combine milk, pudding mix and pumpkin pie spice; beat 2 minutes at low speed or until slightly thickened. By hand, stir in pumpkin until well blended.

Fold in marshmallows. Spoon pudding mixture into 6 individual serving dishes. Garnish as desired. Yield: 6 (½-cup) servings.

Note: One-half cup marshmallow crème can be substituted for the miniature marshmallows. Spoon pumpkin mixture into 6 individual serving dishes. Spoon marshmallow creme by teaspoonfuls over pudding and swirl in with a table knife. Yield: 6 servings.

Pops-On-A-Stick Basic Pop Mixture: 1 (10-ounce) bag marshmallows 3 tablespoons margarine 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal Nonstick cooking spray 8 large pretzel rods Method: Line 2 jellyroll pans or pans with sides with wax paper. In pot, combine marshmallows with margarine. Over medium heat cook mixture stirring until melted, 5 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in cereal until combined. Cool 5 minutes. Coat 1-cup measuring cup and your hands with cooking spray. Divide cereal mixture into 8 equal

portions by scooping 1 generous cup of cereal mixture and packing it to ¾ cup. Immediately form each portion into different shapes.

To make pumpkin pops, you’ll need: Orange paste food coloring ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips 1 teaspoon vegetable shortening Add enough food coloring with cereal to marshmallow mixture in basic pop to tint deep orange. Over 1 end of each pretzel rod shape each cereal portion into 3-1/2inch wide 2-inch thick circle. Place on wax paper-lined pan. In plastic food storage bag, combine chocolate chips with shortening; in microwave, melt on Medium1 to 2 minutes or until smooth. Snip corner from bag; pipe eyes, nose and mouth on pumpkins. Let stand until set, at least 30 minutes.

To make ghosts, you’ll need: 4-inch strawberry fruit roll from 1 pouch (.75-ounce) 1½ cups white chocolate chips 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening 16 chocolate chips 8 “BOO”-shaped candy icing decorations 2 tablespoons white nonpareils or sprinkles Method: Over 1 end of each pretzel rod shape each cereal portion into 5-inch tall, 3-inch wide bell-shape. With fingers, make indentations in shape to create wavy bottom.

Place on rack set over jellyroll pan; let stand 20 minutes. For mouths, cut shapes from fruit roll; set aside. In pot combine white chocolate with shortening; over low heat melt, stirring occasionally, until smooth, 3 to 5 minutes. Spoon chocolate mixture over pops. For eyes, press chocolate chips, pointed ends down, into coating; attach mouths and “BOO” candies. Sprinkle nonpareils over bottoms of ghosts. Yield: 8 pumpkins, ghosts.

Rival soccer players once teammates

The Scranton Prep and Abington Heights girls soccer teams have quite a rivalry going.

It ramped up this year, when the teams met four times, including a division championship game, as the teams were tied with the same record, and in the District 2 semifinals.

But some of the top players from each team have been teammates at the club soccer level. Scranton Prep’s Mary Kate Caucci and Abington Heights’ Ally Christman and Emma Henzes were among those who played together for the Cantolao Explosion, a club team based out of Wilkes-Barre that has tasted success, winning a tournament in the spring in the Philadelphia area at the 18-and-under level.

Even though many of the girls have played together for a long time, they quickly discovered that playing 18-year-olds when you are 14 or 15 is a real learning experience.

“We started when we were very young, and we pretty much all attended the same elementary school,” Christman said. “We were all pretty close, so it was a good experience.”

“Our first years together playing up in years, we lost a lot of games,” Caucci said. “It brought us to understand how we play as we got older.”

The group, which has also included Abington Heights graduate Perrine Wasser, Tri-Boro Christian grad Paige Brown and Scranton Prep’s Liz Shoemaker, has put its time together to good use, and now are reaping the benefits.

“We all have the same background in soccer, having gone through the motions together,” Christman said. “We’ve all seen each other become the soccer players we are.”

“We’ve had a lot of good players from the area,” Henzes said. “It’s fun, playing with some of the area’s best.”

Each player has learned a lot over her time on the field, each improving over the years.

“The speed of play in travel ball is a lot quicker, so that helps a lot in high school,” Henzes said. “Just playing kids who are better than you always makes you better.

“Every one has great foot skills and is athletic, so they always push you to play hard.

You have to work hard; there are no set spots in the lineup.”

“Having the opportunity to be coached by college-level coaches was a great benefit, and I probably would not have developed my technical skills as much,” Caucci said. “It’s almost a year-round thing, except for the fall, when we’re committed to our high school teams.”

“It taught me a lot, and the coaches have been great,” Christman said. “It was very helpful making the transition from club soccer to high school soccer, it really prepared you.”

Christman and Henzes have been instrumental players for the Lady Comets for their entire high school careers, starting to make an impact as freshmen when both played key roles by scoring in the District 2 Class AAA title game victory over Wallenpaupack.

Caucci helped the Classics beat the Lady Comets three times this season.

Caucci has played right wing for both Prep and the Explosion, but the Abington Heights duo have played different positions for the Explosion. Both were outside midfielders at the club level, but Christman plays forward and Henzes is the center mid for the Lady Comets.

They have used the different perspectives to improve their skill sets.

“In the beginning, it was kind of hard because I didn’t like playing up top, I liked using my speed on the wing,” Christman said.

“After my club coach learned I was playing forward, I started playing more at forward for my club team.”

“I have to do a lot more one-on-one at outside mid, so that makes me more comfortable making one-on-one moves at center mid,” Henzes said. “When I’m at outside mid, I know where I want the ball to go and who I want to go to, when I’m crossing the ball.

“When I’m at center mid, I know where the outside mids are going to cross the ball, so I know where I have to go to receive the ball.”

Even though it’s November, Henzes said there are two more tournaments this fall and more in the spring, so she and her teammates will have more time together. It’s hard work, but it’s fun.

Even if the players are from high schools that are bitter rivals, they’ve learned to play as one.

Before QR codes can play a role in municipal arboriculture, first there needs to be some type of inventory in place. Tree inventories, whether of a city’s trees, or of a homeowner’s trees, or everything in between, are important for planning and management. Tree inventories do not have to be elaborate to be effective. For example, in Clarks Summit, we know the species, age and location of every tree we have planted in the last decade or so. We know which trees have received training pruning, and which trees have not. So, if we have some money left in our annual budget—in 2015 we do not—we know where we can spend the money in training pruning as a management investment in the future.

On the other hand, if you are purchasing a home, and you know it has five mature ash trees on the property, you know that the emerald ash borer’s strike is imminent, and you will inevitably have to per-

manently pay a bi-annual bill for prevention, or you will have to pay a one-time bill for removal and replacement.

On the other hand, if you know there are no ash trees in the hardwood mix and you know that the trees have recently been pruned by an arborist, you know that you should expect no tree bills other than leaf removal in the near future. So, the property’s trees will be an asset to your real estate value and not a liability.

But there is another side to tree inventories, and it is one that QR codes bring to mind. (The reason I have QR codes on my mind is because I am consulting with a local university about using QR codes to build a self-guided tree tour on their campus). I designed the QR code in the photo to demonstrate the value. If you read it with a smart phone, it should tell you all about the tree from which the leaf in the picture fell. Placed around a campus, QR codes could also direct you into an elaborate tree inventory, with not only tree-management information, but also species information, location specifics and site management history.

Have a Blood Drive/Win a Scholar-

ship: This winter, high school and college students can help save lives and be eligible to win a scholarship of up to $2,500 by hosting an American Red Cross blood drive. Registration is now open through Nov. 15 to host drives between Dec. 15 and Jan. 15, 2016.

The Red Cross’ Leaders Save Lives program encourages community-minded high school and college students to host blood drives to help maintain the blood supply around the winter holidays.
