You saw the ice sculptures last weekend.

This weekend, are you interested in learning how to ice fish or see how to rescue someone who fell through the ice? Lackawanna State Park will hold its annual Winterfest this Saturday, Feb. 20. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will take place inside and outside with or without snow.

“The event lets people become aware of the opportunities available at the park and to experience them. It shows how other people can create a business and opportunities in the winter season,” said Angela Lambert, an environmental education specialist at the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

A Scott Township dive rescue specialist will be on hand with a truck and all the equipment needed to demonstrate an ice rescue.

“We will teach people how not to drown in an ice situation. If someone falls through the ice and if you do not have the proper equipment, then you should not go on the ice after them. You can fall through the ice yourself and you’re likely to become a victim. Then we have a situation where there can be two drownings. We practice all the time so we are good to go if a call comes in,” explained Bill White, chief diving specialist.

There will be an ice fishing demonstration for those interested in seeing how to catch a fish through the ice.

Keystone College students of the Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning will provide arts and crafts for kids. Children can make groundhogs out of toilet paper rolls or color snowflakes, stars and hearts. They can

also make a bird feeder out of pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed.

Approximately 15 students will be on hand to help out. Some of these students are environmental majors. These activities will take place in the Environmental Learning Center.

Green Scene: Red Water Lakes What state could be more enigmatic than our neighbor? On the one hand, 90 percent of its people live in urban areas, and, with all its counties classified as metropolitan, it has the highest population density of any state. Yet, ironically, the state is known as “The Garden State,” home of “The Shore,” and is a vacation destination for many. With all of these people, gardens and sand, is there room or anything else?

Indeed! The Pinelands National Reserve comprises more than 1.1 million acres of New Jersey, in seven counties — 22 percent of New Jersey’s land area.

Perhaps now, as this winter’s worst cold has been upon us, you should plan a detour off the Atlantic City Expressway this summer. While it is hard to imagine now, I do not think I have felt heat more oppressive than New Jersey’s blacktop-enhanced heat islands. Yet not only do the ocean’s breezes combat this heat, the shade and lakes of the Pine Barrens also provide relief for summer’s worst heat.

If you decide to add a day to your shore trip, you might want to visit Revolutionary War-era Historic Batsto. If you visit in the afternoon, you may want to cool down with a dip in the lake at nearby Atsion (pronounced At-son) Recreation Center.

The lake in Atsion, however, will certainly surprise you with its clean red water.

Lakes in the Pine Barrens have reddish water, but some call it brown or tea-colored. When I swam at Atsion, if I put my

hand more than eight inches below the surface, I could not see it. Held closer to the surface, my skin had a reddish tone in the water, and if you wear light colored swimwear, you will leave with a different color outfit than the one you wore. But on a hot day, if you decide not to enter these red waters, you will be in the minority. When I went to Atsion, there were more swimmers in the public swimming area at this lake in the middle of nowhere than I have seen at any clear lake in Pennsylvania.

The dark color of the water is attributed to two factors, high iron content and tannins from nearby trees, including pitch pine and the Atlantic white cedar which, although it occurs widely along the eastern seaboard, does not occur on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River.

The water is not considered potable, but if it gets in your mouth when you swim, it is sweet and relatively clean: Its normal nutrient concentrations are much lower than federal drinking water standards.

Additionally, the acid in the water and the soil is unusually high, so the area is generally uninhabitable except for rare species. So, aside from your fellow human bathers, you will be swimming alone.

‘Anatomy of Upset’ The Waverly Community House recently held its first in a three-part wellness series with presenters Behnam Bakhshandeh, author, speaker and executive coach and Dr. Mary Elaine Southard, advanced practice holistic nurse. Participants learned how to develop awareness and maintain self-care practices and disciplines that will energize positive changes by making wellbeing a contagious practice.

County Assists Therapy Program

The Lackawanna County Commissioners presented a $65,000 check to Lackawanna College officials for the development of the school’s occupational therapist assistant program. The funds from the county’s Economic Development Office and will be used in conjunction with other grants to start up this two-year associate degree initiative.

Right when you need to march forward, something shakes the soul, upsets the equilibrium and, before you know it, one is back in the doldrums looking for a way out to recapture the positive feeling of confidence.

It ordinarily does not find its way into the mindset of a wrestler who has a 28-3 record, and needs five victories to reach 100 wins in his career.

Yet that is the conundrum Lackawanna Trail senior Trent Phillips finds himself in entering the postseason, which start this weekend with the District 2 Class AA Championships.

Phillips seems ready for districts, and appears eager to get on with his chase of both the 195-pound district title as well as achieving his milestone victory and entry into the triple-digit wins club.

“My confidence is higher,” Phillips said.

“Last year, I wasn’t as comfortable out there, still a little nervous.”

Lions head wrestling coach Keith Youtz has seen Phillips through the bad and the good times over the years, and is happy to see the senior in good form right now.

“He’s doing well, and finally he’s starting to get a little bit of confidence,” Youtz said. “He wrestles well in practice, but (in matches) I think he gets nervous about messing up, but he’s been getting more relaxed in the live matches.”

Youtz hasn’t been able to figure out how or why this happens, but knows the senior can’t let it happen again, not with districts right around the corner. The coach even puts himself on the line, being among those that practice against Phillips.

“A volunteer coach and I help him out a lot, because we don’t give up as easily, and can wrestle OK so that he has to battle to score,” Youtz said.

“He’s learned to chain wrestle, he’s learning to go from one thing to another, and I think it has given him confidence because some of it has been working on the mat live. If that continues, he’s got a chance to go to states, if he wrestles the way

he can wrestle.

“He’s going to have to win two matches down there (at the Northeast Regionals to get to states), and that would be better if he wins districts, but that’s not going to be easy.”

Phillips pointed at a holiday tournament this year that has bolstered his confident feeling even though he lost to Mount Carmel’s Allen Yancoskie, 6-1, in the final.

“I realized that this year was going to be different after the (Tunkhannock) Kiwanis,” Phillips said. “That’s always a really tough tournament, and when I took second there, I really believed that it raised my confidence.”

The senior seems to be more consistent this year, with fewer drastic changes in his matches.

“He’s gotten stronger, moves more and has more confidence,” Youtz said. “Last year, he had some good matches and then he had some bad ones, where he’d lose to somebody who wasn’t that good, and then come back to upset somebody that was really good. It was just a tough season.

“This year, the ones he’s supposed to win, he’s been winning and dominating, and he’s had some good matches with some good kids. He has matured, and has a lot more confidence, and he feels his moves are working for him. He’s gotten a lot better on top, controlling his opponent.”

At this point, Phillips understands what is at stake, how he has a few goals to achieve along the way, and can’t afford any missteps.

Getting to the Northeast Regionals is necessary to reach 100 wins, and he has mixed feelings about them.

“The last time I went to regionals was my sophomore year and I felt I wasn’t ready,” Phillips said. “Now that I’ve been there before, I know what to expect.”

He missed a trip to regionals last year when he placed fifth in districts, a finish that could possibly deprive him of 100 wins.

That missed opportunity will spur him on this year, knowing it’s now or never.

Phillips and Youtz are confident they will see the best from the senior wrestler.
