Are you looking for beautiful artwork for your home or a unique gift idea for someone special? The Pocono Alliance’s fourth annual Give Poverty the Boot Thru the Arts fundraiser, to be held Thursday, Sept.

This night of art and entertainment benefits the Bridges Out of Poverty program of Monroe County, which addresses the issue of poverty by engaging the community and empowering the motivated.

Artwork on display will include: paintings, original prints, jewelry, sculptures, quilts, photographs and more. Each participant will receive a number at the beginning of the evening. When their number is drawn,

they have the chance to select a piece of artwork, but they must act fast, because the next person will be drawn in a minute and ready to take their own artwork!

“This has become a very popular event and keeps growing each year. We have many wonderful friends and volunteers that have donated artwork, so this year’s event will not disappoint,” executive director Michael Tukeva said.

Local artists and special guests will also be creating pieces of art live at the event.

These items will be available through a silent auction at the end of the night.

Hors d’ oeuvres, door prizes and a cash bar will be available during the evening.

Tickets are $60 per person or $75 per couple. Each individual ticket holder will be guaranteed one piece of artwork and a couple’s ticket receives one piece of artwork.

The mystery of what lives around your house or along your favorite hiking trail will be unveiled; learn the techniques for becoming a wildlife detective. Around Town

Learn more about how Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg and Stroud Township can create places and practices to protect your environment and drinking water at three workshops in September. The three municipalities will explore which types of green infrastructure to use locally. Residents’ input is wanted and welcome.

Workshop participants will also learn how to build a rain garden, install a rain barrel and “live green” to keep drinking water and streams clean. At the end of each workshop, a rain barrel will be given away to a lucky winner.

Cards for Charity recently raised $2,600 for the Little Sisters of the Poor at Holy Family Residence. The successful fundraiser took place at the organization’s annual card party at the Elmhurst Country Club.

The fundraising party included a luncheon followed by an afternoon of bridge,

mahjong, pinochle and dominos along with a basket raffle. The Little Sisters also sold scones and cookies.

All proceeds will be used by the Little Sisters to provide physical, emotional and spiritual health services to the residents entrusted to their care.

• The West End Park and Open Space Commission will hold the third annual Dave Fleetwood Memorial Trail Run/Walk at the West End Regional Park, 578 Evergreen Hollow Road in Chestnuthill Township on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 9 a.m. The 3.1-mile race/walk honors Dave Fleetwood, who was killed during a public meeting in 2013.

All proceeds will fund the Dave Fleetwood Memorial Scholarship to recognize Pleasant Valley High School graduates who exemplify the outstanding attributes of Fleetwood. The 3.1-mile trail run winds through 240 acres of open space property and includes a flat trail, an open field and woods trails. Walkers are invited to use the 5/8 mile portion of the flat trail, and/or the 3/4 mile field trail or the entire running course. Registrants for the run/walk pay $20 before Thursday, Sept. 8, and $25 afterward. Awards go to the top two male and female finishers and the top three male/female finishers in each age group. The first 100 pre-registrants will receive an event T-shirt. There will be random drawings of bib numbers for prizes.

New this year is a team challenge. Teams must consis of one male, one female, one junior and one senior, and one must walk the entire course. Special prizes for the team challenge.
