Holy Rosary to hold fundraising dodgeball tourney By Caitlin West Staff writer

Teams from first graders through adults will try to hit — and avoid being hit by — each other next weekend, all in the name of science. The Parent-Teachers Organization (PTO) of Duryea’s Holy Rosary School will hold a dodgeball tournament Friday through Sunday, April 1-3, at the school gym, 125 Stephenson St., to raise $15,000 for a science lab, something the small Catholic school does not have. “Public schools have a lot more things at their fingertips that’s funded by the town in which they live,” PTO member Cindy Pietrowski said. “When you’re in a Catholic school, stuff like that costs a lot of money.” With the addition of a science lab, however, Pietrowski noted kids would have biology, chemistry and more close by and be able “to not just learn in a book but also do experiments and be able to have life experience with it.” In dodgeball, teams stand on a court divided by a center line and throw rubber-coated foam balls at opposing team members to try to hit them, thereby eliminating them from the court. Players also can be eliminated if someone from the opposite team catches a ball they threw. The first team to eliminate everyone on the other team wins. Holy Rosary’s double-elimination tournament will take place April 1, 5-10 p.m.; April 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and April 3, 1-7 p.m. Teams must sign up in advance. Organizers then will come up with the brackets and competition schedule and let the teams know when their matches will take place. Pietrowski said the college students and adults likely will compete the first night, with the younger kids starting the next morning. The tournament is divided into several brackets according to age: first and second grades, third and fourth grades, fifth and sixth grades, seventh and eighth grades, grades nine through 12 and college students/adults. Teams can have between eight and 10 players. Each team will play at least two games.

While schools often hold tournaments like this just for themselves, Pietrowski noted, the PTO “wanted to have something that the community could get involved in.” A couple grade-school groups from Old Forge already have registered. “We are looking for a variety of age groups signing up,” she said. “We’re really into seeing a lot of the college kids coming out and playing, just bringing a lot of people together and the community involvement.” Registration is $10 per player and can be done online at raceroster.com/events/2016/7694/ holy-rosary-dodgeball-tournament. The deadline to register is Sunday, March 27. Participants also can buy a “life bracelet” for $3 prior to the competition that lets them stay in the match if they have been called out. They can only use the bracelet once in the tournament and must turn it in upon using it.

The competition will follow the rules and regulations of the National Amateur Dodgeball Association. “We had to order certain balls and certain whistles,” Pietrowski said, calling it “very official.” They will use a 8.25-inch ball for the high school and college/adult brackets, and a 6.25-inch ball for the seventh- and eighthgrade bracket and below. Awards will be given out to each bracket winner, the overall winner (based on the quickest combined elimination total), the top three fundraising teams and for best team attire. Team are encouraged to come up with creative, matching attire, although it must be appropriate with no foul language or suggestive nature. Sweet Lush Cupcakery of Dunmore will sell cupcakes from its cupcake camper at the tournament on Saturday, Pietrowski added.
