SUBURBAN

On Memorial Day, a pair of documentaries were shooting by Linda Scott

SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN

To celebrate memorial day, Clarks Summit had a parade and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 7069 held services at various cemeteries in the Abingtons as well at the post home on Winola Road. “This was the largest parade ever and had the most people in it,” said VFW member and parade organizer Dominic Scott. “People call me a month in advance to ask how they can be part of the parade.” All that you may already know. What people attending the events may not have known is that Zumafilmz from Abilene, Texas, and Dunya TV from Pakistan were here filming the various events. “This is very honorable that the film crews came here to do this,” said VFW Post 7069 commander Steuart Bailey. “They could have gone to Arlington National Cemetery.” “Producer Carol Windham and I are making a documentary on six small towns throughout the United States, including Clyde, Texas; Social Circle, Georgia; and Clarks Summit. We were in the Clarks Summit area in February of 2012 for the ice festival and returned in the fall to view the different types of seasons,” said producer Ricky Long. “We returned four years later, and it is our third time in the area to see how the town has changed and progressed. We like to see how the town has sustained itself and how it celebrates life in a small town.” “This is the first documentary that I made that was this long. It was an idea I had and wanted to make.” Windham said. “Everywhere we have gone the people have been open and friendly. They have come up to talk to us and ask questions.” The Texas film crew shot footage at the parade, services at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Waverly and at the Clarks Summit VFW post. “We decided to not go with speeches this year but a flag folding. The American flag was folded 13 times, with each fold having a meaning,” said Mike McLane quartermaster/ adjutant at VFW Post No. 7069. “This event

Dr. Qasim Malik, a cardiology fellow at The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education, shared his thoughts on being a Pakistani-American in the medical field as he was interviewed by Irfan Hashmi of Dunya TV. The cameraman Shan Ali.

and the other events held throughout the day are well-received by the community. We get a lot of cooperation and support from VFW members, Clarks Summit Borough, police, neighbors and others.” The film crews visited Manning’s Farm Dairy and Miller’s Farm. They also went to a Clarks Summit council meeting and met with the Mayor of Clarks Summit, Patty Lawlor. “People are the same whether they live in small towns or large. They have to address their issues and how to overcome these issues. Each town has their unique set of problems, needs and desires,” Long said. Zumafilmz officials said they would like someday to see their documentary on a cable channel such as the Travel or History channels. “We visited a few cities in the United States

to see how people from Pakistan are finding success in the United States and in all walks of life,” said senior producer Irfan Hashmi of Dunya TV. “Farooq Ahmed owns the Disco Dollar in Scranton. He was a rock star in Pakistan. We also spoke to Dr. Qasim Malik, who is a cardiology fellow at the Wright Center for graduate Medical Education. We were at the Memorial Day Parade in Clarks Summit. Throwing sweets is a good thing,” he said. Shan Ali was the cameraman. “We were in Clarks Summit to film the parade. After, we went to the Lackawanna State Park,” said Stephanie Slewka, producer/ writer. “We saw a blue heron, a snake and bull frogs. Shan took shots of the sun over the lake. It was probably the prettiest thing we shot. It was like, wow! We never saw anything like it.”
