Lincoln called it “the last full measure of devotion.” Others have called it “the ultimate sacrifice.” Whatever you call it, those who gave their lives to defend our freedoms deserve respect and remembrance. And that it what Memorial Day is all about. Everywhere in our coverage area, people will be honoring departed veterans. Here’s a look at what’s being planned (all events are on Monday, May 30 unless otherwise indicated). In the Triboro Banner area, Old Forge borough’s annual Memorial Day parade, sponsored by the American Legion Post No. 513 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 4954. The parade will step off at 10 a.m. at Main and Miles streets (across from Rite-Aid). Participants should arrive by 9:30 a.m. The parade will travel down Main Street to Moosic Road, where a ceremony will follow at the Old Forge Cemetery. In Moosic, American Legion Posts No. 604 and 568 will conduct joint services at 9 a.m. at the St. Mary of Czestochowa cemetery, at 9:30 at the St. Joseph cemetery and at 10:30 a.m. at the Post 604 headquarters, 309 Spring St. in Moosic. In the Abington Suburban coverage area, VFW Abington Memorial Post No. 7069 in Clarks Summit will sponsor a parade. It will step off at 11 a.m. Memorial services will be conducted prior to the parade at several local cemeteries. There will also be services at the post home immediately following the parade. The annual parade in Dalton steps off at 9 a.m. from Streamside Park and ends at the fire hall, with services starting
about 9:20 a.m. In the Valley Advantage coverage area, the president of Lackawanna College, Mark Volk (a retired colonel), will be the guest speaker the Scott Township Memorial Day Service on Saturday, May 28, at the Scott Township Veterans Memorial which is in front of the township building. Volk’s 26-year military career included assignments in the field artillery and military intelligence branches. His last assignment was in the Pentagon, and he was working there during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack. The service will begin at 10 a.m. Local Boy and Girl Scouts; Rev. Michael Kirwin, pastor at St. John Vianney Parish; members of the Lakeland High School band and chorus and several
