Lacawac Sanctuary is celebrating its 50th anniversary and friends and supporters are invited to leave their personal imprint on its history and future through participation in its commemorative brick campaign. Supporters of the facility can purchase of an engraved brick that will be placed at the entrance of the Coulter Visitor Center and Dr. Susan S. Kilham Environmental Laboratory.

Since 1966 the mission of Lacawac Sanctuary has been to preserve the nearly pristine glacial Lake Lacawac, its watershed, the surrounding forest and historic structures in order to provide a venue for ecological research, scholarly interaction and the training of scientists; and provide public education on environmental and conservation issues.

MARCH 30 Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center will hold a program entitled “Stalking the Wild Woodcock.” Timberdoodle, Bogsucker and Big Eye are some of the strange nicknames given to the equally strange American Woodcock. Join Environmental Educator Brian Hardiman on Wednesday, March 30, for this 1½ hour program where you will learn about the life history and amazing courtship displays of this fascinating and entertaining little bird. Meet at the EE Center, 8050 Running Valley Road in Stroudsburg, at 6:30 p.m. for a brief presentation before traveling to the Tannersville Bog area to observe the woodcock’s lovesick antics. APRIL 1 The Pleasant Valley High School chapter of the National Honor Society will hold a talent show Friday, April 1, 6-9 p.m. in the Pleasant Valley High School auditorium. Admission is $5.

Solar phone-charging bench installed

The Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) recently installed a solar cell phone-charging bench near the front entrance of its main education building, using a grant from PPL Electric Utilities. PPL has long been a partner to PEEC in teaching visitors, especially school students, about the importance of sustainable energy.

This new addition to the PEEC campus comes at the perfect time, according to PEEC’s executive director, Jeff Rosalsky.

“From early March right through the end of June, PEEC will host more than 18,000 school students from over 150 schools in the tri-state area, and many of them will

need to charge their cell phones,” Rosalsky said. “Why not teach them about solar energy at the same time?”

Alana Roberts, regional affairs director for PPL Electric Utilities, helped PEEC dedicate the solar charging bench on March 7th and was the first visitor to use it.

“We are proud to support the Pocono Environmental Education Center, and to help provide this benefit that will surely be in regular use by visitors,” she said. “We support the center’s mission of environmental education, sustainable living and appreciation of nature.”

I have had a seizure for the first time.

Does this mean I have epilepsy?

What should I know?

A seizure can be an isolated incident or it can signal the onset of epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurologic disorder where a person has repeated seizures that occur without warning. Having a single seizure doesn’t mean that you have epilepsy.

Seizures are short episodes when a person does not function normally because of unexplained electrical discharges in the brain. This abnormal brain activity may cause uncontrolled jerking movements, muscle contractions, loss of consciousness or awareness, blinking of the eyes or a staring spell.

Usually an individual seizure isn’t devastating, but recurrent seizures over time can be harmful, damaging both the brain and the body.

The first step is to see a specialist, specifically a Neurologist. If you are diagnosed with epilepsy, there’s no need to be frightened. But you do want to take action. There are many different types of epileptic seizures. Some people experience mild seizures, and others have very dramatic episodes. It’s very important to know what type you have so that you can get the right treatment and keep yourself safe.

We don’t know exactly what causes epilepsy. In fact, for six out of 10 people with epilepsy the cause is unknown. Some of the causes that have been identified include stroke, the growth of a brain tumor, brain infection, a genetic condition and head injury. It could be one factor or combination of several factors.

The most common treatment to prevent seizures is the daily use of anti epileptic drugs. Taking these medications over time will make seizures less frequent and less severe. The question is, should you take anti epileptic drugs to reduce the risk of having a second seizure, or do nothing and hope you will never have another one? Be sure to ask your doctor what your risk is of having another seizure and would epilepsy medication be helpful?

Drug side effects can vary from person to person. Anti epileptic drugs can cause upset stomach, dizziness, skin rashes, mood and behavioral problems, among other difficulties. Most are mild and reversible, but for some patients the side effects pose serious challenges.

In addition to taking the right medicine at the right time, an important part of therapy is about changes patients need to make their activities of daily living, including getting adequate sleep, avoiding stress and eating right. For some people, knowing what triggers a seizure can also help them avoid having one.

The good news is that the majority of people diagnosed with epilepsy can control their seizures and live normal lives. In short, taking medications as prescribed, getting adequate sleep, exercising and managing stress are some of the ways you can avoid drastic restrictions that come from epilepsy and live the life you want.

The East Stroudsburg University (ESU) field hockey team was recognized recently for their success in the 2015 season. The team earned its first-ever PSAC championship and NCAA Division II championship. The Warriors finished the season with a 19-3 record, setting the school record for wins. This special event is designed to spotlight regional visual and performing talent throughout an evening. The theme for this year’s event is “Go Green” in recognition of the importance of the environment to all our lives.

PoconoArts will be inducting several local artists into its artist “Hall of Fame” during the event. This year’s inductees include Jill Elizabeth, Visual Art Hall of Fame; Susan Jordan, Performance Art Hall of Fame; and The Families of Stroudsmoor Country Inn, Lifetime Achievement Award.

Additionally, PoconoArts will recognize two “Rising Stars,” senior art and music students who plan to continue their studies at the college level.

The Rising Stars will each receive $500 Suzanne Anderson Scholarships. “ The gala begins with a preview of the live and silent auction items from 6-7 p.m. followed by dinner and recognition of this year’s award recipients. The live auction follows and includes work by Dorothy Strauser, Andrea Rimberg and Andrei Protsouk. Silent auction items include visual and performing arts as well as items and services from local merchants and organizations.
