Three towns will take part in the National Night Out by Christopher Cornell ADVANTAGE EDITOR

A 30-plus-year-old tradition, the annual National Night Out observance is back again, and three area towns will be taking part in the coming days. The first National Night Out took place in August of 1984. That year, 2.5 million neighbors took part, in 400 communities in 23 states. National Night Out now involves more than 38 million people in 16,540 communities in all 50 states, along with U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. “Communities are making a united stand for safer neighborhoods,” said Matt Peskin, creator of the event. “It’s a powerful night which provides tremendous benefits for the entire community throughout the year.” Officials say the goal of the event is to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement, while promoting a sense of community. Archbald The first event will be Wednesday, Aug. 6, 5-9 p.m. at the Athletic Club Field at the end of Export Lane in Archbald, hosted by the Archbald Police Department. The Lackawanna County Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team will be on hand, along with live entertainment, kids activities and games, raffles and giveaways and food and refeshments. Mayfield The Mayfield Crime Watch will present its fifth annual National Night Out on Thursday, Aug. 6, 6-9 p.m. at the William Walker Hose
