Behind the Camera
That’s where videographer from Moosic excels By Josh McAuliffe
special to the Triboro Banner Stephen Reuther spent a good part of his teens playing in rock bands. The Moosic resident’s passion for music hasn’t waned a bit, but today he’s more content to be the guy behind the scenes. And who’s to argue with that, given the results it’s yielding thus far. A senior mass communications major at York College of Pennsylvania, Reuther recently took second place in the Student Music Video Category of a contest sponsored by the Broadcast Education Association (BEA). Reuther and three fellow York College students received the award for their collaboration on a video they shot for Lancaster-area band the Stonewall Vessels. The video, for a song titled “The Great Swindle,” finds the band playing amidst a frightening horror movie-like backdrop featuring masked killers and deadly objects. In late April, the college will send Reuther and his cohorts to Las Vegas to pick up their award at the BEA’s Festival of Media Arts. “I heard the news and I was a little shocked. It’s awesome,” said Reuther, 22, who served as the video’s director and lead editor. “I’m very excited about it. It’s a really nice confidence booster.”

The video for “The Great Swindle” can be found on YouTube and Facebook, where it’s already been viewed more than 10,000 times. One of Nick and Laura Reuther’s three children, Reuther originally entered college as a business major, but quickly realized his interest in video production made him a better fit for York College’s mass communications program. Owner of Reuther Productions, Reuther has spent the past couple of years working with close to 20 different bands, doing everything from shooting videos and live concert footage to taking promotional photos. (For more information on his company, visit facebook.com/reutherproductions.) “Pretty much anything with a camera, I can do for a band,” he said. Reuther and his fellow student collaborators shot the video for “The Great Swindle” as part of a project for their advanced production class. “Our professor said, ‘Film whatever you want. Just make it look good,’” said Reuther, citing his professor, Robert Mott, as a big mentor. The crew was helped by the fact that they had some first-rate technology to work with for the project, including a $50,000 Red Epic Dragon camera and “a ridiculous amount of lighting,” Reuther said. The students found good creative partners in the members of the Stonewall Vessels, who came to Reuther with the idea for the horror movie theme. The video was shot over the course of two days at a Lancaster-area hotel that

boasted a basement catacombs perfect for the video’s storyline. One day was spent filming the band performing, while the other was spent focusing on the storyline, Reuther said. “It worked out really well. It was a super easy process and the band members are all really nice guys,” he said. “We let the visuals tell the story, with the music helping to drive it along.” The video’s success has resulted in Reuther picking up another client. Meanwhile, he’s hoping it and the award will
be a nice resume builder as he begins the search for post-graduation jobs. Already, he’s sent applications to several companies in the Los Angeles area. “It’s a good feeling, but slightly terrifying,” Reuther said with a laugh of life after college. “I love video production and I love music. If I can find a way to mesh the two seamlessly, that would be perfect. Although video production of any sort would be great.” To see Reuther’s winning video, visit bea2016.secure-platform.com/a/gallery/ rounds/1237/details/24369.
