You voted, we counted and now the waiting is over. Here are the winners of the 2015 Readers’ Choice awards. We begin with two special awards, chosen by us. Last year we began awarding a special community service award, named by the editorial staff. This year’s recipient is the Eynon-Archbald Lions Club.

And this year we created a new award: our favorite advertiser. Our sales reps got together and the choice was obvious: Ken Steffin, proprietor of Mr. Kenneth’s hair salon, who has advertised faithfully in the Advantage for 25 years.

Pasta Dinner

In conjunction with the Fred Ciotti 5K Race being held on Saturday, April 25, the Greater Carbondale YMCA, 82 N. Main St. in Carbondale, will hold a pasta dinner Friday, April 24, 6-8 p.m. Those who pre-registered for the race are encouraged to pick up their race packet at the dinner.

The Scranton District Dental Society (SDDS) has selected Jessica Hatala as the 2015 recipient of the Dr. Bernard Shair Award.

The Ben Shair Award is a cash gift funded by the SDDS and an endowment fund founded by the family of Dr. Bernard Shair (who died in 1982) and administered by the Scranton Area Foundation. It is presented to a University of Scranton student who has been accepted by a dental school and shows tremendous promise in the field of dentistry.

Jessica Hatala will graduate from the University of Scranton in May with a biology degree. She will attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine in the fall of 2015.

Hatala lives in Dickson City with her parents, John and Barbara Hatala. She is the recipient of the Betty Redington Scholarship, Monsignor Bilski Scholarship, Loyola Scholarship, Shander Scholarship, Purple Club Scholarship, and the James F. Swift Scholarship.

Hatala’s volunteer service includes working at the Leahy Community Health and Family Center for the last three years, volunteering more than 280 hours. She also gives her time at her church, Saint Andrew’s Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and served as a teaching assistant for the microbiology lab at the University of Scranton. She currently work with Drs. Kenneth G. Miller and Jeffrey Lin at Pinnacle Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery associates as a dental assistant.

Brent Dale Keklock will be the student marshal for the computer science baccalaureate degree program at the Penn State College of Engineering spring commencement ceremony on May 8.

Keklock will receive a bachelor of science degree in computer science.

College of Engineering student marshals are selected for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to engineering student life.

Keklock is the son of Joyce and Dale Keklock of Archbald. He is a 2007 graduate of Valley View High School in Archbald.

He is the recipient of the Evan Pugh Scholar Award (senior), the Lockheed Martin Corporation Scholarship, the Bruce E. Moyer Trustee Scholarship, the Harry Dickstein Memorial Scholarship and the Class of 1922 Memorial Scholarship.

Spring Concert

The Penn State Worthington Scranton Chorale and Jazz Band will present its annual spring concert Sunday, April 26, at 2 p.m. in the campus’ Gallagher Conference Center. Admission is free. The WS Chorale consists of Worthington Scranton students, faculty and staff.
