Peckville Assembly of God Church, 3364 Scranton-Carbondale Highway in Blakely, is a busy congregation. A few years ago they moved into a brand new building with a sanctuary that doubles as one of the best performance venues in the area. The church has hosted Christian rock performers and a number of other events. The latest is an elaborate and reverent theatrical production called “The Letter.” It will be presented Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29, at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The story presents the last days of Jesus of Nazareth, framed by the apostle Paul as he pens his first letter to the Corinthians. The show is directed by Winnie Patten, a member of the congregation and a retired Valley View teacher, and will have more than 70 actors and will feature drama, music, worship dance, theatrical effects and will conclude with the actor playing Jesus entering the sanctuary on a white horse. “From the beginning to the end, people will experience the wonders of the Easter season,” Patten said. “I did have help with how to stage the production from my co-directors of drama ministry, Sandi Liuzzo and Terri Welch, who came up with the title ‘The Letter.’” During the course of rehearsals and preparation, there were challenges. One was the weather. “Our practices were scheduled for Monday evenings. Do you know how many Mondays had snow in January and February? Finally, I said, ‘That’s it! No more snow on Monday!’ And we didn’t have snow on Mondays after that. God is good.”

A scene depicting Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, from a previous production of the drama at Peckville Assembly of God church.

“There are so many to thank, I couldn’t begin to give names,” Patten said. “From the people who handed out posters and tickets, to the people who will take care of the children in the nursery and not get to see the production, to the people who ironed 50-plus costumes one night as the cast practiced, to the guys who constructed the set, to the foreign exchange students who are working lights and stage handling, to my sister, who is always at my right hand to help, to the cast. “Of course,” she added, “without the help of the Holy Spirit that gives us inspiration Ken Simmons Sr., who will be portraying Jeand ideas, there would be nothing.” For more information, call 570-489-4961. sus, will ride a horse into the sanctuary at the climax of the production.

Traditional Garlic Soup 10 cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons butter, melted 4 potatoes 8 cups of water 2 teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon caraway Salt, to taste Toast Swiss cheese Peel the cloves of garlic and crush them using a garlic press. Alternatively you can chop them using a grater, or just slice them fine with a knife. Melt two tablespoons of butter in a pot and add the garlic. Fry for few seconds. Next add some eight cups of water, 2 heaping teaspoons of paprika, another teaspoon of caraway, and salt to taste. Then peel the potatoes, cut them into small cubes, and add to the pot. Boil for about 15 minutes until the potatoes get soft. In the meantime, toast a slice of bread. I toasted mine on butter in a frying pan but you could just use a toaster. Cut the toast into squares and put them in a bowl. Then scoop the finished soup over the bread. Finally, grate some cheese into the soup and also decorate with some garnish, such as parsley. Ten Years is too Long to Suffer Hi. My name is Eleanor and I’ve been coming to Czulada Chiropractic for the past six months. Before that, I had been suffering with low back and leg pain for over 10 years!!!! I was in so much pain that I had to lay on my floor for some relief and when I had to get up my husband would have to pick me up from the floor!!!! I was sent to other doctors for treatment but I didn’t get the type of long lasting relief I needed. I continued taking Tylenol to try to relieve some of the pain, but it was still there after the medicine wore off. Ten years is too long to suffer so when I saw your ad in the newspaper I decided to give it a try! I’m so glad I decided to come to Czulada Chiropractic. I make all my appointments, and I feel WONDERFUL!! I am able to walk without pain, and best of all I have no more restless nights!!!

Chicago's Invenergy, LLC wants to build one of the nation's largest natural gas power plants less than a half mile from little league fields in Jessup. They think it will be great for the community, but we have to ask...

DO THESE TWO THINGS GO TOGETHER?

• Emissions from the plant will include sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and particulate matter, including ultrafine • The plant will use 4-4.5 million gallons of water per day for cooling (approximately 40% of the area’s daily excess supply) • 600,000 gallons of the plant’s turbine-cooling water will be discharged into the trophy trout section of the Lackawanna River daily • The proposed site sits atop an old municipal landfill capped in 1972 • Studies show property values will likely decrease within 2 miles of the plant, greater decreases closer to the plant. 7%+

To support our cause, donations* can be sent to:

• Its three smoke stacks will be visible in the entire upper valley
