Seasonal meals available in many places by Christopher Cornell ADVANTAGE EDITOR

Not everybody observes Lent, of course, but enough people do in this area that a number of organizations, especially churches, bring in a little extra income providing ready-made Lentobservant meals to local residents. And even if all you gave up for Lent was Lent, much of this stuff is homemade (or church kitchen-made) from long-passed-down recipes, and it’s usually worth stopping in and getting some. Here’s a rundown of some of the places you can get meals made with Lent in mind. (Warning: you will get hungry just reading this.) • All Saints Orthodox Church, 211 Willow Ave. in Olyphant, sells frozen pierogies Fridays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., and Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m., even when it’s not Lent. The price is $6.50 per dozen. Call 570-383-0785 or 570-489-5591 for more information. • Forest City Area Emergency Services, 380 Railroad St. in Forest City, will sell Manhattan clam chowder ($3.50 per pint; $7 per quart) and cabbage and noodles ($6 per quart) each Friday during Lent. Orders should be placed by the preceeding Wednesday afternoon. Call 570-7855025 or 570-785-3226 to place an order. Leave a message if there is no answer. • William Walker Hose Co., 803 Penn Ave. in Mayfield, will hold its annual takeout-only fish dinner Friday, March 18, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (or until sold out). Tickets are $10 in advance; $12 at the door. Menu includes hand-breaded fresh fish, baked potato, coleslaw, dinner roll and rice pudding. Call 570-282-6059 to purchase tickets in advance or to make arrangements for group orders. Tickets are also available at the Mayfield and Jermyn Borough offices during regular business hours, and from WWHC members. • The Holy Name Society of Blessed Sacra-
