‘Great American Cleanup’ is under way by Christopher Cornell ADVANTAGE EDITOR

We made it through. It was a tough winter but it’s finally over, and the signs of spring are everywhere: the last of the once-gigantic dirty snow piles has melted into black puddles, fire companies are switching from Lenten pizza sales to barbecued chicken dinners and it’s time once again for the Great American Cleanup. Since the inception of this event in 2004, more than 1,565,950 volunteers have picked up 80,575,227 million pounds of litter and waste, 146,259 miles of roads, waterways, shorelines and trails have been cleaned and more than 136,300 trees, bulbs and flowers have been planted. Volunteers also removed more than 202,350 tires and 130,218 pounds of scrap metal. In our area, there are several events where you can pitch in. Archbald Mayor Shirley Barrett has designated Saturday, April 18, as “Clean-Up Day in Archbald Borough.” Volunteers from the Eynon-Archbald Lions Club will pick up litter on Kennedy Drive and Route 6. The Valley View Football volunteers will be on the Main Streets of the borough. Mayor Barrett is requesting that residents of the borough clear garbage and unsightly areas of their properties and neighborhood surroundings. If any individual or organization would like to volunteer to help clean a designated area, call Mayor Barrett at 570-498-9398. Up the road in Jermyn, St. James-St. George Episcopal Church will hold Earth Clean Up Day on Saturday, April 18. River in Jermyn. Volunteers will meet at the church, 398 Washington Ave., at 9 a.m. for a light breakfast. The group will work till about noon. Call 570-489-9576 to offer your help. On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 22 and 23 (rain date April 24), the students and nearby residents of the Lakeland School District will hold a litter cleanup from 1:30-3 p.m. both days. This event will take place on the grounds of all three schools, Lakeland Elementary Scott Campus, 1333 Lakeland Drive and Lakeland High School, 1355 Lakeland Drive, both in Scott Township and Lakeland Elementary Mayfield Campus, 501 Linden St, in Mayfield. Call 570903-6967 for more information And there’s more cleaning next weekend, this time in Jessup. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to noon each day, there will be a
