Pocono Alliance reached a milestone recently by providing its 10,000th screening as a part of the Healthy Start Early Childhood Screening program. The program provides vision, hearing and developmental screenings for children 5 and younger. The Healthy Start program began in 2004 with 156 vision screenings and has grown dramatically every year to a record 2,000 screenings taking place in 2015/2016.

Mia, age 2 1/2 (shown in the photo on page one), received the 10,000th screening at Smithfield Elementary and her sister Bella, age 5, was number 10,001.

“This was a great way to end the 2015/2016 screening year. We are so pleased to reach

this milestone and can’t wait to reach our next milestone of screening every child in Monroe County,” Pocono Alliance executive director Michael Tukeva said.

The screening program has expanded this year to also include a Parents’ Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS) screening which helps determine risks for developmental delays. The children’s care coordinator is trained to conduct over-the-phone and in-person screenings and identify any potential factors that may be interfering with a child’s growth and learning. After the evaluation is conducted, recommendations and referrals will be made based on a child’s specific needs.

The children’s care coordinator later follows

up with families that have been referred for further evaluation to make sure that they have been in touch with early intervention providers and are receiving the services needed for their child.

“We hope to make parents more aware of how their child is developing, address any concerns they may have and follow up with them to ensure these children have the opportunity to reach their full potential,” Tukeva said.

Fun children’s activities Saturday, Sept. 3, 1-5 p.m. in the backyard of the Stroud Mansion, 900 Main St. in Stroudsburg. This event will coincide with StroudFest in downtown Stroudsburg. The Monroe County Historical Association will also hold an Open House with free tours of the historic 1795 Stroud Mansion in conjunction with the Olde Time Fun event.

Various activity stations featuring historic games, crafts and activities for children will be located in the backyard. New this year is the “Ye Olde Selfie Station” where guests can dress in historical costumes and clothing props. A child-friendly walking tour brochure will also be distributed so families can explore downtown Stroudsburg and discover the borough’s local history and architecture.

In the event of inclement weather, Olde Time Fun will be moved indoors.

A mid-size that acts like a bruiser

2016 Chevy Colorado Duramax Diesel Entry Base Price: $20,100 Price as Tested: $41,905 This week, we’re driving the anticipated 2016 Chevy Colorado pickup, delivered with the new to the U.S. 2.8-liter four-cylinder Duramax Turbo Diesel under the hood. Our tester came in 4WD Crew Cab four-door dress that features the Z71 off-road suspension package fare for a base price of $34,640. The extended cab and crew cab Colorados (no standard cab is available) are available in either long box (6’2”) or short box (5’2”) versions, the latter our tester’s dimensions.

The engine has been sold since 2011 in international markets, so all of the research and development has been completed prior to its stateside introduction.

Until now, Colorado was available either in the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder ($20,100 entry) or the optional 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine ($1,235 option), but with the introduction of the 2.8 Duramax Diesel, customers demanding enhanced towing capabilities and more payload combined with outstanding fuel efficiency have a specific option to choose from.

At the heart of the Colorado Duramax Diesel formula is payload, fuel mileage and driving a mid-size truck that acts like a big bruiser when called upon. Colorado Duramax’s maximum towing capacity is a stout 7,700 pounds on 2WD models and 7,600 on the 4WD version.

Skid plates on the 4WD and a frame-mounted two-inch receiver hitch come standard with the Duramax option while an integrated trailer brake controller is standard and exclusive to all diesel Colorados. Best of all, the EPA fuel economy is excellent with 20 city and 29 highway for the 4WD Duramax and 22 city and 31 highway for the 2WD Duramax, all best in class Chevrolet’s price for the diesel upgrade on our 4WD Z71 is $3,905 which also adds a tow/haul mode, brake controller, exhaust brake to keep speed steady while going downhill and twospeed electric transfer case.

A six-speed manual comes standard with the 2.5 entry level Colorado, which has a top tow capacity of 3,500 lbs. for those looking for a light duty truck. The V6 engine, meanwhile, is also a solid choice for towing as it can haul 7,000 lbs. and deliver 18 city and 26 highway EPA numbers.

Standard across the Duramax line is Chevy’s beefed Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic featuring GM’s new Centrifugal Pendulum Vibration Absorber torque converter, which eliminates vibrations into the cabin and makes for quite the smooth ride.

Duramax Diesel equipped Colorados are

badged with the famous Duramax logo on the front fenders, and then further acknowledged when you start the engine and the “musical knock” begins. This diesel melody is loved by owners and when combined with outstanding exterior and interior design the result is a “double positive.”

Our tester’s optional ($745) side assist steps make entry easy while stake pocket handgrips make for easy cargo access. Notable features include 17-inch aluminum wheels, OnStar 4G Wi-Fi and four USB ports. Our tester also featured the optional $475 spray on bedliner, a $500 premium Bose stereo and a $250 enhanced trailer equipment package.

Colorado offers room for five in the Crew Cab and room for four in extended cab arrangement. Colorado continues to feature the MyLink infotainment system for $495 more that adds an eight-inch touch screen and easy to use stereo and accessory controls.

But it’s the GM built Duramax engine that receives top praise. The 2.8-liter inline four-cylinder is an iron block/aluminum head design with dual overhead cams. Internals feature forged steel cranks and heavy duty connecting rods to handle the Duramax’s 16.5 to one compression ratio. As for torque, the little 181-horse diesel generates an astounding 369 pound-feet of torque at just 2,000 rpm as I was able to chirp the tires under full throttle from a standing start. When cruising, 65mph shows just 1,600 rpm on the tach, resulting in the outstanding highway MPG. As for the ride, Chevy Colorado Duramax is a truck, and a heavy duty one at that thanks to the Z71 suspension. However, as tough as this truck is, it delivers surprisingly good highway comfort and includes all the safety equipment expected in today’s vehicles. Your Chevy dealer will explain everything Colorado offers in detail when you visit the showroom.

Important numbers include a 128.3 inch wheelbase, 4,691 lb. curb weight, 21 gallon fuel tank, 44.6 ft. turn circle and a ground clearance of 8.3 inches.

In summary, Chevy Colorado Duramax Diesel is by far the very best mid-size truck I’ve ever driven.

Likes: Duramax fuel mileage, outstanding torque and towing, great looks.

Dislikes: Tough entry/exit without optional assist steps, not much else.

Q: I recently saw an article in The Pocono Record that said there have been some recent cases of whooping cough in Monroe County. My son goes to daycare, and I am very concerned about this.

A: Dr. Garry Hamilton There absolutely are steps you can take to help your son from catching Pertussis, or, as it’s commonly known, whooping cough. But first, let’s talk about what whooping cough is: quite simply, whooping cough is a highly contagious disease that affects the lungs. It can be especially serious, particularly for infants. In fact, more than half of babies under a year old who contract whooping cough need to be hospitalized.

At Pocono Medical Center, since the end of May we’ve seen six cases of confirmed Pertussis. Prior to that we hadn’t seen any new cases in 2016. It is caused by a bacteria called Bordetella pertussis, which is only found in humans. This bacteria can attach to the cilia—tiny, hair-like extensions that line the upper part of the respiratory system—and then release toxins which damage the cilia and cause a child’s airways to swell up. As I noted above, whooping cough is highly contagious, and is easily spread from person to person by coughing or sneezing. Many times, babies pick up the illness from siblings or even caregivers who may not even realize they have the disease.

People who have whooping cough are most contagious up to two weeks after they start coughing, however people on

antibiotics are contagious for a shorter amount of time.

and caregivers should keep babies away from anyone with a cough or cold symptoms. In addition, anyone who comes in contact with a newborn baby should make sure they’ve had at least one Tdap vaccine. If not, or if not certain of a vaccination status, you should see your physician immediately.

It is best to get the vaccine at least two weeks before being around a newborn.

At first, people may not realize they have whooping cough. That’s because sometimes it starts out like a common cold, complete with runny nose or congestion, sneezing, mild cough, or fever. Severe coughing can begin after the first week. Unlike a common cold, whooping cough can lead to coughing fits that go on for several weeks, and sometimes they’re even violent.

Some people who have Pertussis tend to make a loud “whooping” sound while inhaling air during a coughing spell—hence the name—but not all.

For instance, Pertussis cough can be milder in kids, teens, and adults who were previously vaccinated, and that typical whooping sound may not be present. In infants, even a cough may be minimal, and the only symptom is when the baby stops breathing.

Of course, practicing healthy habits, and teaching your children these habits, can help stop the spread of whooping cough as well. Wash hands often; don’t share personal items like utensils, and if you have symptoms of the illness, cover your cough and stay home, either from daycare, school, or work.

Finally, if you or someone you know starts to exhibit symptoms of whooping cough, see your doctor right away, especially if you’re the parent of an infant. Your doctor can prescribe antibiotics, and if taken early enough can help with the symptoms. If taken later in the illness, while an antibiotic may not help with symptoms it can at least stop the spread of the disease.

By getting vaccinated and practicing good personal hygiene, chances are good that you and your family will stay healthy and happy.

Scary? Yes, of course it is. With infants and young children, whooping cough can lead to Pneumonia, apnea, seizures, and even meningitis.

However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, out of more than 28,000 cases of Pertussis in 2014, only nine patients died from the illness. The best way to prevent whooping cough is to get vaccinated, regardless of your age. The vaccine is available for infants, children, teens, and adults. The childhood vaccine is called DTaP, and the booster for preteens, teens, and adults is called Tdap.

BAKED POTATO SOUP 4 baking potatoes, about 2½ pounds 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 6 cups 2-percent milk 1 cup reduced-fat extra-sharp Cheddar cheese, divided Salt and black pepper, to taste 1 cup reduced-fat sour cream 3/4 cup chopped green onions, divided 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled Preheat oven to 375°. Pierce potatoes with a fork; bake for 55 to 60 minutes or until tender.

Cool and peel; mash and remove skins. Place flour in large pot; slowly add milk, stirring with a whisk until well blended. Cook over medium heat until thick and bubbly, about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add mashed potatoes, 3/4 cup cheese, salt and pepper to taste. Stir until cheese melts; remove from heat. Stir in sour cream and ½ cup green onions. Cook over low heat for 10 minutes until completely heated. (Do not boil). Spoon 1½ cups into each of 8 bowls. Top each serving with 1½ teaspoons cheese, 1½ teaspoons green onions and 1 tablespoon cooked crumbled bacon. Yield: 8 servings.

Add chicken broth; cook and stir until mixture boils. Cook for 2 minutes; set aside. Brown pork chops in oil; season to taste. In lightly greased 13-by-9-by-2-inch baking pan, layer potatoes and onion. Pour broth mixture over potato and onion mixture.

Place pork chops on top; cover and bake at 350° for 1 hour. Uncover and bake 30 minutes longer or until potatoes are tender. Yield: 6 servings.

Pour salt and water into a large glass bowl.

Add onions and cucumbers. Weigh down with a plate to make sure cucumbers and onions are immersed. Let stand 3 hours or overnight.

Drain, do not rinse.

In large kettle, combine vinegar, sugar, mustard seed, celery seed and grated ginger.

Bring to a boil. Add cucumbers and onions; continue cooking. Let them get scalding hot, but Do Not Boil. Place pickles into sterilized jars. Cover with cooking liquid and seal. Cool and refrigerate.

SPICE-ROASTED VEGETABLES 2½ cups zucchini, sliced ½-inch thick 1 cup carrots, sliced ½-inch thick 1 cup green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces 1½ cups yellow squash, sliced ½-inch thick 1½ red bell peppers, cut into 1-inch square pieces BEEF AND NOODLE CASSEROLE 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 8 ounces corkscrew pasta, such as BAKED CHICKEN PUFF 1½ tablespoons olive oil rotelle or rotini 1 can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted ½ teaspoon dried basil 3/4 pound Velveeta, cubed, about 3 1/3 cup milk ½ teaspoon dried oregano cups, divided ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon dried parsley 1/4 cup milk 1 cup diced, cooked chicken or turkey ½ teaspoon dried tarragon 2 pounds ground chuck 2 cups cooked peas, green beans ½ teaspoon dried thyme 2 cups marinara pasta sauce from a jar or broccoli ½ teaspoon dried rosemary 1 (10-ounce) package frozen mixed 4 eggs, separated 1/4 teaspoon salt vegetables ½ cup Cheddar cheese, grated 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning Preheat oven to 375°. Mix sugar and cornstarch; add to peach and water mixture. Cook until thick. Remove from heat; add lemon juice and butter; blend well. BROWN SUGAR POUND CAKE 3½ cups sifted all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking powder 2 sticks butter, softened ½ cup (1 stick) vegetable shortening 1 package (1 pound) plus 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 5 eggs, room temperature 1 cup milk, room temperature Butter pecan frosting (recipe follows) Preheat oven to slow 325°. Grease and lightly flour a 10-inch Bundt pan. Sift flour and baking powder onto waxed paper. Beat butter, shortening and sugar in a large bowl with electric mixer at medium speed until smooth. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until mixture is fluffy. Add flour mixture, 1/3 at a time, alternating with milk just until blended. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until top springs back when lightly pressed with fingertip. Cool cake in pan on wire rack 15 minutes. Loosen around edge and tube with knife; invert cake on wire rack; remove pan and cool cake completely.

Prepare frosting. Spread frosting over top of cake, allowing it to drip down sides and center. Yield: 24 servings.

To prepare butter pecan frosting: Brown 1 cup chopped pecans in 1 stick butter in a heavy, medium-size saucepan. Let cool.

Stir in 2 cups sifted powdered sugar. Stir in enough milk so frosting is creamy.
