Slow Progress in Closing Wage Gap Women are out-earning their male counterparts in these fields: media production and direction; vehicle and equipment cleaning; wholesale and retail buying, except for farm products; transportation, security screeners, social and human service assistants, counselors and special education teachers. (U.S. Census Bureau) other fields where women are making wage strides include technicians specializing in life, physical and social sciences and health; dieticians and nutritionists; occupational therapists; mechanics dealing with aircraft, vehicles and mobile equipment; and construction laborers. By Dave Gardner

When female equality is discussed, there may not be an issue within America as incendiary as the wage gap. Data indicates some difficult truths about this issue. Women make up the majority of the American population and are now the breadwinners in four out of 10 American families. They also earn more college and graduate degrees than males. Yet, during 2014, female fulltime workers made only 79 cents for every dollar earned by men, indicating a gender wage gap of 21 percent. The data worsens with age when female earnings are measured against male compensation. Women, ages 45 to 64 who logically should ascend to senior positions, receive earnings at 77 percent of their male counterparts. In addition, female median earnings are lower than those of males in nearly all occupations. However, in a twist, the federal Census Bureau has

identified a small line-up of occupations where women are out-earning their male counterparts. These jobs include media producers and directors, cleaners of vehicles and equipment, wholesale and retail buyers except for farm products, transportation security screeners, social and human service assistants, counselors and special education teachers. Other fields where women are making wage strides include technicians specializing in life, physical, social science and health, dieticians and nutritionists, occupational therapists, mechanics dealing with aircraft, vehicles and mobile equipment and construction laborers.

Samantha Christiansen, Ph.D., assistant professor of history at Marywood University, expressed approval that American society is generating conversation about the wage gap, but also said this is happening at a slower pace than she would

expect. She agreed that there is some progress with overcoming the wage gap, but is disheartened that the gap widens with age, as careers progress. According to Dr. Christiansen, the male-tofemale wage gap stands at 90 percent for workers ages 16 to 24, but expands to 77 percent when considering workers ages 45 to 54. Females with doctorate degrees are advancing better than those without, but race is also a factor, with overall Latino females earning 54 percent of their male counterparts. She added that these gap numbers are a global problem and nodded approval that within America a relevant conversation is taking place. She compared wage gap revision to be like chipping away at a mountain because of deeply ingrained ideas. “We need to achieve small progress and build on it,” said Dr. Christiansen. “I suppose it was incredibly optimistic to expect great change within only two generations.” Please see COVER STORY, Page 14
