Running a 5K foot race is great exercise, the competition is fun and it’s a great way to socialize. But two 5Ks this weekend have an added bonus: the proceeds go to worthy causes. Finishing the Fight, a group that sends care packages to servicemen and women who are deployed overseas, will host its annual 5K walk/run Saturday, June 6, at Blakely Borough Recreational Complex. Registration begins at 9 a.m.; the race begins at 11 a.m. Proceeds will support the group’s efforts. Angel Lubeck started the organization in 2011, when her son, John Lubeck Jr., was deployed with the United States Marine Corps. “My son, John, was a 2010 graduate of Mid Valley, where he was a very enthusiastic runner with the track and cross country teams,” Angel explained. “Two weeks after graduation he joined the Marines and left for boot camp. At the end of 2010 he informed us he was training for a tour in Afghanistan. I needed to figure out a way to keep myself occupied while he was gone. It was a matter of keeping my sanity! “A friend of John’s said to me ‘hey, why don’t you spend your time organizing a race in John’s honor in order to benefit him and the other Marines who are with him?’ At that moment this race was formed in my mind! I discussed it with John and I asked him to come up with a name for the race and he and one of his fellow Marines came up with the name: Finishing the Fight. “The race was held on Saturday, June 4, 2011, because if John were home, that would be the day of his birthday party. With a lot of hard work and dedication we had a very successful event and a lot of new friendships were made along the way. Between June and November, we sent more than 300 care packages to the First Battalion Ninth Marines in Afghanistan. I am very passionate about helping our military. For all that they sacrifice for us, this is the very least we can do for them!” For more information, visit finishingth-
