The snow is gone, the trees are budding and it’s time to venture out of hibernation. One way to shake off the winter doldrums is to peruse — and maybe purchase — the work of artists and craftspeople and sample some great food. Luckily, the Throop Arts + Food Festival fits the bill and it’s coming to the Throop Community Civic Center, 500 Sanderson St. on Saturday April 22, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free. This annual event gathers 60-plus vendors to showcase their art, handmade goods and food. It will feature interactive activities from local Throop establishments. “We will host free art classes for students in pre-K through sixth grade” said Samantha Nardelli, co-organizer of the event. Sign the kids up by visiting throopfestival.com/free-art-classes. There will also be “live performances by Light Weight, the Olyphant Lions & Pride Squad and the Mid Valley High School steel drum band. We will also have NearMe Yoga doing a 45-minute class. Food trucks include Mannings Ice Cream, Uncle Bucks BBQ and Southwest Savory Grill,” she said. There will be a parade to kick off the event at 10:30 a.m. on Charles Street,” Nardelli said. There will also be a full raffle room with handmade goods and food. She said that all of ther proceeds from the raffles will benefit the Civic Center, to help pay for year-round programming.

“Last year we raised $1,300,” she said. This year’s version of the festival is bigger than ever. “We’re expanding to the St. John’s parking lot and the Civic Center parking lot,” she said. “We have a total of 80 vendors. Some are interactive, including a 20foot rock wall from the Army Reserves. The Throop Neighborhood Watch will sell “We Support Throop Police Dept.” signs for $10. Worried about parking? A free shuttle, provided by Gilbride Limo, will run from the Throop Little League Field to the Civic Center for easy parking.
