Black Friday event hopes to lure you away from big box retailers by Tucker Hottes
SPECIAL TO THE TRIBORO BANNER
Black Friday is one of the busiest retail sales days of the year — but most of the frenzy occurs at chain stores and malls. This year, residents are urged to “shop small” with local artists, designers, crafters and other vendors on Friday, Nov. 27 at Nearme Yoga, 700 Main St. in Moosic, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nearme Yoga founder, and coordinator of the NEPA Yoga Festival, Chelsea Manganaro said the idea came to her after connecting with artists and vendors earlier in the year. “I ran the NEPA Yoga Festival in September with a lot of the same vendors who will be at this event,” she said. “I kind of just shot an e-mail out, because we really don’t have anything for Black Friday for local businesses. There’s always Wal-Mart, Target, the big national chains. I figured I have the space and there’s nothing really going on locally for Black Friday, so I sent out an e-mail to people who I thought would be interested.” From that initial contact, Manganaro said the event started to take shape. “There were about five people initially who were interested,” she said. “The final total will be about 10. I initially overestimated, thinking I could fit 20, but lots of people needed extra space. There’s a collection of all different types of products that will be there for Black Friday.” While most large retailers will focus on outrageous sales to bring people through the door, Manganaro said the Shop Small Black Friday event is more about showcasing local talent. All visitors will receive a free pass for yoga classes and a chance to win a Manduka yoga mat. Vendors will have raffle items as well — tickets will be available for $5 per 10 tickets. “There will be some sales, and others will just be selling their crafts all in the same place,” she said. “Some of it will be on sale, but not everything – just a
few items. In addition to that, there will be a raffle. Even if you just want to check out what is going on and what’s being sold, even if you don’t buy anything, there’s a chance for you to win and pick up some gifts early with the raffle.” For a first-time event, Manganaro said it was initially difficult to gauge a response. “I didn’t really know what to expect, this is Nearme Yoga, 700 Main St. in Moosic, will be the site of the “Shop the first time doing it,” Small” event. she said. “When I started more about the yoga philosophy of “seva” or “selfless out, I knew I would have at least some people there.
