SUBURBAN
Scare competition at area businesses by Linda Scott
SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN
Scarecrows are on display throughout the Abingtons. The Abington Business and Professional Association (APBA) started this annual event with community members making scarecrows. The scarecrows were then put on display along State Street attached to parking meters. A few years ago, the focus changed to having businesses make the scarecrows and have the community vote for the best one. “This event is a kick off to our big Fall Fun Day [held last weekend],” said Laura Ancherani, executive director of the ABPA. Businesses participating in the event this year include: Abington Community Library, Clarks Summit Senior Living, Clel’s Place, CLOE and Company, Essential Beauty Treatments Salon & Spa, Everything Natural, McGovern Insurance, Northeast Title and Tag, The Refill Station, Sole to Soul, Summit Frameworks, Woods and Company. Some of the entries are whimsical. For example, the McGovern Insurance scarecrow is driving a small black car. It is dressed in a red and gray shirt with a straw hat. The back of the car is carrying pumpkins and rats. “This is the third year that our business has participated,” said Diane Ludka. “We try to make the scarecrow fit into the context of our business, which includes insurance for homes, cars and business. The first year we participated we won first place and we placed third last year,” The community can meet Gwendolyn at the Refill Station. “I got the idea from Pinterest to use a lid for the face, but it is my own design and I made it up,” said Marlene Zeidman.
“I thought, ‘let me make this into a scarecrow.’ ” The scarecrow is dressed in a green checked shirt, jeans purchased from a thrift store and a belt. Straw sticks out from holes in the jeans. The shirt has multiple colored buttons and Gwendolyn wears a hat with leaves. “I painted her face on a lid and used a button for her nose. I braided her hair and put ribbons in it. I had fun and it gets the community and businesses involved,” added Zeidman. The Refill Station is a family-owned business run by Eric, Marlene and Jason Zeidman. They do computer repairs and sell ink toner. This is the first year the business has participated.
