SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN

It may be called Taste of the Abingtons, but The Abington Rotary Club’s annual shindig — slated for Sunday, Sept. 13, 5-8 p.m. at the Nichols Village Hotel and Spa 1101 Northern Boulevard in Clarks Summit — is more than just a change to sample food from restaurants in the immediate vicinity. Eateries and food makers from all over the region now participate in the event, “This event brings an opportunity to see the great things available in the area, meet friends, relax and support the Rotary’s projects within the community,” said Laurie Stephens, Abington Rotary vice president and chair of the event, now in its 11th year. Attendees can nosh on salads, soups, appetizers, entrees and desserts from 36 participating restaurants. Several businesses or restaurants return year after year. Manning’s brings several varieties of ice cream cake, Cooper’s in Scranton brings its Maryland Crab Bisque and Gertrude Hawk Chocolates will be there, to name a few. New this year is Harvest Catering, based in Dunmore. Owners Sara and Michael Bodner will be cooking up zucchini flower quesadillas with fresh tomato salsa. “Members of the Rotary will bring back Ingrid’s Swedish meatballs, a tradition from the early years of the Taste,” added Stevens. The evening also includes raffles and and chances to win gift certificates. “If a restaurant cannot make the event it will often show its support with a gift certificate,” she explained. “Some of this year’s features are an overnight stay in Camelot’s King suites, a cigar sampler and ice cream cakes.” Back this year is wine tasting with Maiolatesi Wine Cellars and Bartolai Winery and beer tasting with 3 Guys & A Beer’d. Cigar tasting will be in a separate area. Ken McGraw will play piano music and, later, jazz ensemble the Mark Nolan Trio, with special guest Alex Marino, will perform. Boy Scout Troop 160 is sponsored by the
