Elementary students learn important lessons by Linda Scott

SPECIAL TO THE TRIBORO BANNER

Riverside West Elementary School recently held two safety-oriented programs on the same day. One was a fire-prevention program, thanks to a visit by a local fire and rescue company, and the other was something called the American Red Cross Pillow Project. More on that in a moment. Taylor Fire and Rescue Paramedic Jim Ralston spoke to the students in kindergarten through fourth grade about smoke detectors, getting out of the house in case of a fire, creating a meeting place outside, never going back in to a burning building once you’ve gotten out, not playing with matches and lighters, what to do if your clothes catch on fire and when to call 911. Firefighter Tony Preambo assisted with help from Lt. Wesley Jones, who donned his firefighting gear. Paramedic Ralston explained that the gear will not burn in a fire. Gear included a breathing mask and a helmet. “They help you firefighters put out fires,” said kindergarten student Stella Schiavo. “We give them an education on how we do our job, rescue them and put a fire out,” Ralston said. “When you are trapped in a fire, it can be dark and scary. We make noise by breaking down doors and windows. You do not want kids to be afraid of you. We used to walk into the room with all the gear on but that scared some of the younger students. Now they see us put it on,” said Ralston. The Red Cross Pillow Project was presented to third- and fourth-graders. The program began in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. Loyola University students carried their belongings in pillowcases when they were evacuated during the

hurricane. The goal of the program is to educate the students on natural disasters and the role the Red Cross plays during them. American Red Cross volunteers Fred Spatt, John Cardieri and Lynn Muxhler Stash presented the program. “The project is Third graders from Riverside Elementary West participated in the “Pilfunded through Dis- lowcase Project,” presented by the American Red Cross. Each student was given a handbook and a pillow case to be decorated. Written on the pillowcases is a list of items kids should put inside in the event of a natural disaster. The students learned how to develop a fire escape plan at their home, that would take about two minutes to get out; the difference between a hurricane and tornado; and how to stay calm in case of an emergency. Smoke detectors were passed around and the students got to push the button to hear how the alarm sounded and how to insert batteries. “The American Red Cross Pillow Project helps the students learn the many ways in which Members of Taylor Fire and Rescue were the American Red Cross volunteers assist people presented with a donation from Riverside Stuin natural disasters,” said fourth-grade teacher dent Council.
