Santa is planning several special visits in the area

The big day is a week away, and during that week, organizations around the area, especially fire companies, will be helping Kris Kringle make special visits in our area. Here are some of the stops he’s planning.

• Jessup: Jessup Hose Co. No. 2 will again help Santa tour the streets of Jessup on his sleigh, as they have done for the past 52 years. Santa will arrive at Fire Station No. 25, 333 Hill St., at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, and proceed to tour the uptown area of the borough (south of Lane and Erie Streets) on Friday night. On Saturday, Dec. 19, the tour will begin at 3 p.m. and Santa will complete his rounds by touring the Downtown and Winton sections of the borough.

• Archbald: In a tradition that goes back more than 50 years, Santa, Mrs. Claus and some elves will visit the East Side Hose Co. No. 4 fire station, 458 Salem Road, Saturday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. and for the rest of the afternoon, they will canvass the community to distribute more than 750 bags of candy. Anyone wishing a special personal visit from Santa within the community can call at 570-876-1524 leave a name, address and call-back number.

• Eynon: Wozniak-Pavloski Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7963 in Eynon, Ambrose Revels American Legion Post No. 328 in Archbald, John Niedzinsky American Legion Post No. 624 and Eynon Fire Co. Engine No. 3, will hold a children’s Christmas party Saturday, Dec. 19, noon to 3 p.m., at the VFW post home, 284 Main St. in Eynon.

• Mayfield: Several area fire companies, including Mayfield Hose Co., Whitmore Hose Co. and William Walker Hose Co. will again help Santa tour the borough Saturday, Dec. 19, beginning at 4 p.m. on the west side of town.

Also in Mayfield, the Mayfield Lions Club will hold its annual “Visit with Santa” on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2-3 p.m. at the Saint John’s Center on 703 Hill St. in Mayfield. Pizza and refreshments will be served and there will be a sing-a-long of traditional Christmas songs and Santa will read “A Visit From St. Nicholas.”

A complimentary picture will be taken of each child on Santa’s lap. Admission is free.

• Throop: The Throop Civic Center, 500 Sanderson St., will show “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” Saturday, Dec. 19,

at 6 p.m. Bring your pillows and blankets.

There will be light snacks, arts and crafts projects and a visit from Santa.

• Blakely: The Blakely Hose Co. will drive Santa through the streets of the borough Sunday, Dec. 20, beginning at 1 p.m.

• Peckville: Santa Claus will tour the Peckville section of Blakely Borough Wednesday, Dec. 23, starting at 5 p.m., riding on the Wilson Fire Co. No. 1 fire truck. Candy will be distributed to all children en route. Parents of ill or homebound children should check in with Santa’s elves at 570-383-2286 and leave an address, phone number and any other essential information.

Donations from the local community included hot dogs, pizza, beef barbecue, hot chocolate, cookies, candy and cakes.

There was music, food, games and prizes. And, of course, although he’s very busy this time of year, Santa stopped by.

About 60 children from parish, and from Holy Cross parish in Olyphant, attended the party.

Blessed Sacrament Parish’s Christmas Carolers visited with parishioners and friends in Throop. This was the 10th year that the group has spread some holiday cheer.

Around Town Karl James Lewis, 17, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 21, St. Mary’s Visitation Parish in Dickson City. He is the son of Griffith and Katherine P. Lewis of Blakely, and the grandson of Alexander and Marie Piela of Blakely, and the late Willard and Joyce Lewis of Scranton.

For his Eagle Scout project, Lewis planned “Operation Gratitude: Collection for the Troops” in his scouting and Parish community.

He led his fellow Scouts, Leaders and family in a collection drive and letterwriting campaign benefitting Operation Gratitude — a non-profit organization that sends care packages and letters to deployed military members in all branches of the armed services, as well as veterans of all wars and wounded warriors.

Lewis organized and promoted the collection of personal hygiene items, candy, socks, beanie babies, CDs and DVDs and stationary within Troop 21, Pack 21 and St. Mary’s Visitation Parish.

After collections with the Pack and Troop and two weekends of collections at St. Mary’s, Karl lead his fellow scouts in sorting and counting all the items. He also organized the packing and shipping to Operation Gratitude. During the weeks of collections Lewis also met with Troop members to write letters for our military that were also shipped to Operation Gratitude.

Lewis is a member of the Order of the Ar-

row Lowwapaneu Lodge 191 and has earned the Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pious XII religious awards and also received the St. Michael Award from Troop 21 for receiving all four Catholic scouting religious emblems. He has also earned 28 merit badges.

Lewis is a senior distinguished honor student at Holy Cross High School. He is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and received a national Latin exam bronze medal. He is a parishioner and Altar Server (10 years) at St. Mary’s Visitation Parish. He has completed more than 70 hours of community service during high school and will have 30 more before graduation in June 2016. Lewis is also the lead singer for the band “Ten Stories.”

Karl’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor will be held Sunday, Dec. 27, at the 11 a.m.

refrigerate at least 6 hours or until firm and well chilled. In the meantime, prepare Coconut Ruffles; wrap and refrigerate until ready to use.

To make coconut ruffles: With skewer or clean screwdriver and hammer, puncture eyes of 1 small coconut and drain liquid into small bowl.

(If you like, add to orange juice, or other fruit drinks.) Open shell by hitting very hard with hammer around middle. With a small sharp knife, pry coconut meat from shell in pieces.

With vegetable peeler, draw blade along curved edge of several coconut pieces to make waferthin wide ruffles with brown edging. Remaining coconut can be peeled and shredded for later use. Refrigerate and use within 1 to 2 days.

When cheesecake is firm, with spatula loosen pan side from cheesecake and remove. Loosen cake from pan bottom; slide onto serving plate and pile Coconut Ruffles on top of cheesecake. Yield: 20 servings.

Holiday Pepper Cookies 4½ cups flour ½ cup cocoa 2¼ tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon cloves 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 cup oil 1¼ cup lukewarm water ½ cup walnut meats 1 cup mini-chocolate chips Combine all dry ingredients. Add oil and lukewarm water; mix well by hand.

Add walnuts and mini-chips. Shape into balls. Place on cookie sheets and bake at 350˚ for 10-12 minutes.

Pistachio Cookie Sticks 1¼ cups all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons sugar ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom 1 stick butter (no substitutes) ¼ cup finely chopped pistachios ½ cup semisweet chocolate morsels 1 teaspoon shortening Stir together flour, sugar and cardamom in a medium mixing bowl. Cut in butter using a pastry blender until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in pistachios. Form mixture into a ball and place on a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth. Pat or roll dough

into a 10x6-inch rectangle and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 325° for 25 to 30 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cut into 3x1-inch sticks while the dough is still warm. Cool on wire racks. Melt semisweet chocolate morsels and shortening in a small heavy saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally. Drizzle over cooled cookies. Yield: 18 to 20 Pistachio sticks Fresh Fruitcake (Moist and delicious. Freezes very well for long storage or may be kept refrigerated for up to one week.)

2 medium oranges 2 medium cooking apples 2 ripe medium-size bananas 2 large eggs 1½ cups granulated sugar 1 stick butter, softened 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 2 teaspoons baking soda ¾ cup golden raisins ¾ cup finely chopped walnuts Cut each orange, including the rind, into 8 sections. Remove and discard seeds. Chop orange fine in food processor, blender or grinder; set aside in a 2-quart bowl. Repeat chopping with cored and cut apples, peeled if desired.

Mix apples with oranges; peel bananas, puree or mash, and mix with oranges and apples.

In large mixer bowl, beat eggs. Gradually add sugar, beating until mixture is thick and smooth. Whip in butter; add reserved fruits.

In a quart container, stir or shake flour with baking powder and baking soda. Beat flour mixture into fruit mixture; stir in raisins and walnuts. (Nut pieces should be small enough not to interfere with slicing. Turn batter into 2 (9x5x3-inch) loaf pans that have been greased and floured. Bake at 350° for 1 hour or until cake tests done. Let cool on rack before slicing. Serve plain or topped with a thin glaze of confectioners’ sugar and orange juice. Yield: 2 loaves, 10 servings each Any comments, questions or favorite recipes? Yoga Studio to Open in Peckville

Nearme Yoga, 110 Terrance Drive in Peckville, is now open. The studio will offer a variety of yoga classes including all-level vinyasa classes, kids yoga for all ages, mom and me classes, happy hour class, candlelight flow, beginner “the basics” yoga, restorative yoga and many workshops and events.

In addition to yoga there will also be barre classes, and massage by appointment. Nearme yoga also has a small boutique store that has much more than yoga products.

The grand opening in scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 20, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
