BANNER

Two local events featuring crafts and food by Kimberly M. Aquilina

SPECIAL TO THE TRIBORO BANNER

The summer might be dwindling, but the church fairs and bazaars aren’t quite over yet. This Saturday, Sept. 26, you have your choice of two events … but why choose? With the 15th annual craft fair at the Divine Mercy Parish at St. Joseph’s and the fall bazaar at the United Methodist Church bursting with “gently used” donations (with proceeds benefiting local charity), why choose just one? What: 15th annual craft fair hosted by the Women’s Guild of the Divine Mercy Parish at St. Joseph’s. When: Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Where: 312 Davis Street, Moosic (in the Parish Center). Additional details: Admission is $1; parish phone number: 570-344-1724 This year’s craft fair is the biggest and best yet, Mary Ann Donovan, chairman of the event, said. With 45 tables of crafters, she’s sure there will be something for everyone to enjoy. “And they are all very, very nice crafters,” Donovan said. “There’s no Avon or Pampered Chef and all that. It’s homemade. Everything is handmade.” The craft fair boasts ceramics, wreaths, cross stitch, hand-dipped candles, handmade baby clothes, American Doll clothes, book binding, hand-knit scarves, and handmade jewelry. The fair also includes a raffle for a chance to win a quilt created and donated by women from the parish. For those who are less interested in baby clothes and more into tasty treats, there are plenty of chances to get your salty/sweet fix. Attendees can buy baked goods by the piece for at-

show nibbles or if a full cake is what you need, Donovan said items can be purchased whole, too. Also available for purchase: “cheeseburgers and wimpies and hamburgers and hot dogs and Texas wieners and pasta salad and, oh, all kinds of stuff,” she added. “There are people who come in the morning and buy what they want and they leave and come back in the afternoon for lunch. They like the food,” Donovan said with a laugh. “It’s a nice day and you meet a lot of nice people.” What: annual fall bazaar and flea market at the United Methodist Church. When: Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Where: 402 South Main Street, Taylor (in the church hall) Additional details: Admission is free; parish phone number 570-562-3335. Reba DeStefano, treasurer of the United Methodist Women’s group (UMW), is the youngest member of the group, so the fall bazaar has been around long before she was, but that doesn’t make her any less excited for it. “We have a bake sale table with homemade

baked goods. We have a white elephant table. We have books,” DeStefano said. “Anything that is ‘gently used’: donated things like toys, jewelry, costume jewelry. [There will be] a holiday table with Christmas decorations and any kind of holiday decorations.” And if all of this shopping makes you hungry, “There’s always homemade soups, wimpies, hot dogs and cupcakes,” for purchase, DeStefano said. Every year, by about July or August, the donations are brought in to the church. The items are sold at the bazaar and the money raised is given to a charity of the UMW’s choosing. “The United Methodist Women will decide at a later meeting,” DeStefano explained. “Last year, we gave to various organizations within the community. Sometimes we give back to the church. We choose local organizations.” So who has benefited in the past? “We’ve given to the Women’s Resource Center, the Triboro Food Pantry run by the church in Moosic; we’ve given money to the Riverside School District for the children,” DeStefano said. “A lot of times, whatever we have leftover, we donate to the Salvation Army.”
