SUBURBAN
...with the sounds of the school’s music program
by Linda Scott
SPECIAL TO THE ABINGTON SUBURBAN
Walk into Keystone College’s Brooks Theatre on a Tuesday or Wednesday night and the sound of music welcomes you at the door, all because of Keystone’s unusual music program. The college does not offer music majors, but it started a music program in 2014. Keystone College music programs operate under the division of student life. Jeffrey “Jeff” Tylutki is the director of bands and a trombone player. He has a degree in music education from Mansfield University and studied composition at West Chester University. He is working on his master’s degree. Prior to coming to Keystone College, he taught in Orange County, Virginia, for four years and Lackawanna Trail High School for one year. “This is the first large instrumental program in Keystone’s history,” said Tylutki. “Colleges have a special responsibility to nurture both critical and creative thinking,” said Keystone College president David L. Coppola. “The performance and appreciation of music is a wonderful way to foster discipline and delight in the community and is a vital part of the Keystone College experience.” The bands at Keystone consist of the symphonic band, jazz ensembles, athletic band, jazz combo and chamber ensemble. The bands are open to Keystone College students, alumni, community musicians and high school upperclassmen. There are no auditions, fees or tuition. Students also get a free weekly lesson with a staff member. “We provide the structure and material for the band members to succeed. There is an attendance policy, and you have to be on time. We accept all musical levels. You do not need a grade to be a good musician,” said Tylutki. Angela Capone is a community member who plays percussion. She played in the Dunmore High School marching band during high school. “I did not play after high school. My friend knew about the Keystone band and

that they were looking for percussion players,” she said. “I was interested in playing again and was looking for something. I fell in love with playing again.” Tim Nawrocki is a Lakeland High School graduate and is a junior information technology major at Keystone College. He plays the flute. “I was disappointed my freshman year because Keystone did not have a band program,” he said. “Jeff Tylutki has a passion and runs a tight program. He encourages everyone to play. The bands add a lot to the community and to the college.” The music program also offers the chorale at Keystone and the Keystone chamber singers. The chorale will select four community singers and four Keystone college students through audition. The Keystone chamber singers number 55 members. They sing a variety of music including Broadway and classical. The Keystone Band performs. “It is a fun atmosphere.
